Compressed object streams?
« on: January 18, 2010, 02:57:06 PM »
I got an email from the people who handle our online interactive Pubs. I create an optimized multi-page PDF which our people send to them. The email states: After running some test on the problem pages I noticed that these pages use compressed object streams which YUDU does not support. If you have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro we recommend you optimize your PDF to get rid of any issues YUDU may have with PDF.
When optimizing does not work we recommend loading the problem page into Photoshop and then saving it as PDF, this will flatten the PDF and get rid of any issues
.
My optimiziner is already set to flatten all transparencies, but I did notice a setting "Remove compression" under "Object compression options" under clean-up.
Anyone have a clue what these people are talking about?

Certainly more constructive advice than the email. Take into PhotoShop...

But...what are Object Streams? And, if I'm right in assuming they're being sent for online viewing, why would you be removing compression?
But then, it's compression of objects, not images.   :undecided:  Something in that, maybe.

Compact PDF Specification

Quote
Bulk compression of most objects in same stream
PDF 1.5 introduces object streams which are very effective in compressing hyperlinks, which can be plentiful and were previously uncompressed. However, pages cannot be put into object streams and must be compressed separately. This is unfortunate for the general purpose compression algorithms (LZW and Flate), since they achieve compression by replacing patterns previously seen with short indexes to the pattern, and with less text there is less opportunity for sharing. Compact PDF compresses all or most pages together, into a compact stream.

I didn't really understand much other than it has something to do with links. And I've seen that message about compressed object streams in Acrobat preflight.

It basically compresses other parts of a PDF that aren't "normally" compressed, like images. Sounds like the engine Yudu is using makes "yudu" extra work that their engine isn't capable of doing. Sounds like a flaw to me....

That makes sense. I doubt tap was doing anything out of the mainstream.

Your pun also qualifies you as a probationer in the old man joke stakes, Matt. Just thought I'd send a heads-up on that. In case it may be a concern for you.
It may not be, of course.
