That or a way where I can get the proofer closer to what we have on press. In some aspects it's better with the new plates and sometimes it's totally off. I have an idea why as the proofer was calibrated to different media, plates, ink and just about everything.

I know little about harmony so I don't have a clue how to begin. Would it be possible to print something on the press and generate a .icc profile that will get us closer to what we are putting down?

I'd rather have stories told than be telling stories of what I could have done.

Yes it is, but you'll need someone who knows how to do it.

Why not try to print and proof according to ISO 12647 instead of profiling your press?

We also calibrate our press/proofs to a known standard(SWOP) instead of profiling the press.

We do not do things the right way here. Last time we switched plates we couldn't come close so I was told to make it work. I did and 90% of the time it's fine. We have been having issues, the boss is aware but doesn't want to change as "we have been doing it for xxx years and it's been fine".

It hasn't, the pressman is constantly fighting and ever since I made it work the boss has been complaining the proofs don't match exactly. I told him we need a color guy in and time to do it correctly. We also won't match any previous printings.

I've never seen an owner comprehend this so it must be quite difficult.

Hey, I'll get you the contact info for the guy we use but I know for a fact he ain't cheap! He does G7 Certification, usually a 2-day process but your needs may be much less rigorous, just not sure about travel time & expense etc. I'll send myself an email to get his stuff tomorrow anyway.

Talk to your ink vendor. They should be more than willing to send out a color expert with all the tools needed get you profiled for free, or at least at a huge discount. I did this myself immediately after they put me in charge of the department.

EDIT: I just want to expand upon why these ink companies are really willing to send out color specialists at minimal cost. From my experience -and this is my personal opinion based on observation- most un-calibrated places will run their color under density because running levels over density is painfully obvious. This not as profitable for the ink vendors because of ink consumption. This is why they typically offer this service. I will say that after we got profiled using G7 spec and GRACoL standards, our density readings were much higher than we were used to. Color complaints immediately dropped off the board while press set-up time dropped dramatically. The ROI is immediate.

I guess that the press manufacturers might have some capable color guys, too.
But I also guess, that if you ask them to come and help, you need to be prepared to spend some big money.
Working in Prepress is very difficult. God chose only the best to do this job.
