grayscale placed in Indesign dark

Just noticed something odd..... a grayscale photo, when placed in inDesign becomes quite a bit darker. When editing in photoshop for example, a 17% area is coming through on the separations preview as 17%, it looks quite muddy.

When exporting to pdf it's the same, too dark.

Anyone seen this?

sorry all, just noticed that the box had a 15% background color applied.

Yeah, it's the old KISS principle (keep it simple stupid).

My first reaction that it was some kind of hocus-pocus voodo color management thing. :drunk3: (dot gain, ICC profiles, color setting interchange between photoshop and Indesign, whatever).

It always is, except for when it isn't.
