Title: How to convert an InDesign document to Word
Post by: ratintrap on October 24, 2011, 08:51:37 AM
Is there any easy/reliable way to convert an InDesign document to Word format?

The reason I'm asking is because our salespeople have log sheets that list info pertaining to their advertisers that have been managed by my department in the past. I'd like to convert them to Word format for sales so they can manage them on their own. Up until a couple of years ago they didn't have computers of their own ( :embarrassed:), that was the reason we took care of the log sheets for them.

I've tried exporting the document as a PDF and then converted it to Word using Zamzar.com but the conversion wasn't perfect. I can just clean up the .doc I got from Zamzar but a cleaner conversion would be good if anyone knows of a better option.

You should be able to open the PDF in Acrobat and "save as" a word file from there.
What version of Acrobat do you have?

Also you can export it as Rich Text out of Indy and then import that into Word. No guarantees on how it comes out though.

I've had pretty good luck with the Acro to Word conversion. What kind of word file do you have?
I noticed you said it was a log file, does it look like an Excel file with cells or what?

Haha... we're doing a revised consent form for my wife's work (drug testing, imagine the score here on b4p if there was a random call-in...  ). She wanted a Word file as well. So after PitStopping the changes, also saved As a Word file.
But I sent it to her without opening to see if it 'worked'.   :wife:

This file started out in PageMaker and was converted to InDesign. My boss is going to redo the log sheets in Excel. I'm not familiar with Excel myself.

Holy cow. RageMaker to InDesign to Word. Now there's a 2 point reversal for ya! As an old boss of mine used to say, "Just push a button. That's why you prepress guys make the good money," as he walks away grumbling something about stupid computers and how things used to be better with film.

It's prepress related, don't sweat it. I worked for Malwick back when he and Mosher owned Graphic Arts Prepress Lab back in the early 90s. Real piece of work, that guy. Killed myself for him for 5 years working no less than 80+ hours a week the entire time I worked there.... fired me and Nick Burns, (Another member here) on the same day for being 5 minutes late. I should have figured staying up there until 2 AM the night before getting all his crap done wasn't as important as I thought it was. When I heard Delaney hired him as a Manager, I never laughed so hard. Talk about putting someone in a position they don't belong in. Did you work under him? I feel for you if you did.

Jason from Southwestern. Were you correct?

Translated roughly from Latin, Malwick could mean "awful penis"

[/quote]Hey Jason - nope, never woulda guessed. He actually hired me, brought me down from Washington state. Heritage paid my way, then hired someone else for prepress so I got put in as Job Planner. Not a lot of heart in the upper echilons of that place, I can say now that I am not there - good fellow employees some are. Things sound like thin ice for SW also.

Not as bad as you would think. We are staying busy, I just question a lot of decisions from upper management. Buying equipment when we have idle presses makes me wonder. I'm just a monkey, what do I know, right?

Mark Weems still up there? I worked with him several years ago. Probably quite a few people there I would know. Been doing Prepress in OKC for the last 20 years or so.

No problem. Hey, quick question... how do you deal with Bruce? Hahahahahaha! You don't really have to answer, I already know. You can feel safe on the B4.... what we talk about, stays HERE!

There is a lot of good information on this site. Not only that, but it's also a great place to let out some of your aggressions. We all one big happy Prepress family. Well, not all of us are happy, but you get the idea.
