Fujifilm XMF / XMF imposition...surprise, (a nice one).
November 29, 2017, 09:00:05 PM

I'd convinced myself that it wouldn't know what to do with this one, and would not flow the pages without my doing a second job, and running the 16pp work& Turn separately. However, it *did* flow them. :faint:

The double-shaded green is the work & turn. The other 2 ate the 2 sides of what they term here a 'double 16pp'. I.e. they're printed as sheet work, together, then cut down for folding/binding. Nearly fell off my chair, as I was convinced the double-up would throw it. Nup.

These are the Stripping Sheet Templates which are brought in to construct the impo.

Fujifilm XMF / Thumbnail view lost
September 04, 2017, 09:42:31 PM

We're now on the latest, and on new iMacs, so outa date shouldn't be an issue. I Paste below the relevant part of the email just now to our Fujifilm tech guy.

Seems like any new job brought in, no thumbnails in the dropdown or Reading Order visible. --->  White boxes.

Have:

-dumped the job and re-done.

-quit Clients and restarted XMF Server

Blank thumbnails can be double clicked and the PDFs viewed.

My compadre here is double-checking an 88 pp job which we do yearly, and involves many ads from entities in the national entertainment industry.
He's just picked up one of those rogue ooops panes plonked there, (before it went anywherer). He's deleted it, but is now trying to replicate how he did it. I can't for the life of me remember how it happens. Someone here will know...as they'll still feel the pain of it.

.... mate here reckons this is how you disable it.

Windows / Server hotswapping
June 27, 2017, 10:20:34 PM
Been a bit of a saga, but I just ordered a drive from Leizig to replace one of the three running our system drive on the HP Proliant, which runs XMF. I hadn't noticed one was red-lighted. :embarrassed:

After some argy-bargy, I went for this one, as with price+freight seems pretty good. Fujifilm guy is off to the other side of the country for 2 weeks next week. Our IT guy, who's in the centre of the city, and visits on a similar time frame to Halley's Comet, has not yet proffered a reply by email. However, and opinion from the Screen guy, (we'll be upgrading to Screen thermal), says hot-swapping may be better, as it should start striping over once it's in and detects the new drive (SCSI Controller stuff?). He said that this may obviate the need to get into BIOS to reset stuff. Am too old for that learning curve.

The Leipzig guys seem to be implying that its wiped/formatted ready to go.

My new compadre is back in Tuesday, and I doubt it'll be here before then, he'll be of actual and moral support.

I'm basing doing this on Mr Murphy being a constant presence, potentially. Will be weeks before the new server comes, I think.

.... oh, it's 3 disk RAID 5, but am verifying that.

Thoughts are most welcome.

The one I bought---¬

The Rest... / Archiving/backup...fresh look.
May 28, 2017, 10:54:30 PM
We're headed towards new 27" Retina iMacs. Looks like we'll get them first, be able to hook them up, get Adobe apps running.
It's been suggested by someone here that we should think about getting a RAID setup ono which we put everything backup/archiving-wise. This would include XMF proprietary archiving, as well as manual 'archiving' of incoming files, once they're well pout the door, and Mac backup via ChronoSync.

I know people here are pretty well versed in this stuff. Thoughts.. recommendations gratefully accepted.

Oh, also, can I partition such a drive for FAT32 as well as OSX? The XMF Archive files will be the former, everything else the latter.

The Rest... / Gigabit switches
May 28, 2017, 10:35:26 PM
We've had a Netgear GS108 (8 port) for a looong time. Just after gigabit came in, from memory.

We need to access 9 or 10. Our IT guy has said that as our needs are simple, we can just hook up 2 8s together.

Don't want to go super cheap, but does anyone have a recommendation on brand/model?

Also, I was thinking 2 new ones would be wise, as they do have a 'service life', from what I can gather.

Thanks...  :cheesy:

Black Magic is choking between the Image & Render phases, on larger files. OK we do have big image files here, and it's always been slow, but it's now stalling; effectively freezing. Have twice shut down the Mini it runs on, the 2nd time a button off.

AFAIK, Black Magic does some Neil/Young Ones heavy HD data swaps as it tries to rotate 90º, which it has to for our 7900.

I just did a separate readers' spreads job on a 44pp A5 program, so it can crunch them, which it's doing in the smaller bites.
I'll have to do a tape up of these pages so the press guys have an imposed proof.
Am thinking of quitting Serendipity when it's finished, and run either applejack, or Onyx, which I've downloaded for 10.6.
But I can drop applejack off my iMac, into Mini Apps folder, and give it a run.

At a loss to know why, at this stage it is freezing, rather than taking a loooong time.

I've emailed FujifilmMan.

Any reason to use Onyx over applejack? Am nervous that I'll break something during this process.
Hi from Monday. :tonofbricks:

Of course, Mr Murphy has decreed that I go through this before the upgrade. Why should I be exempt.

Adobe Acrobat / Licensing update issue
May 09, 2017, 07:56:42 PM
We have been frozen in time here... 10.6.8, have not updated CC apps for some time, partly through fear, partly laziness/old age.

We are, so the rumours suggest, about to be thrust into the current era. We both here tried launching Adobe Applications Manager; really just to say "Hi Adobe, we're still here, gonna be calling in some stuff soon on new machines...".

After a long progress interval, we get to an Admin prompt, and we then get to Error A12E1. Now on the Adobe forums, the only thing that seemingly provides an answer is to launch Activity Monitor, look for AAM Updates Notifier.app, cancel it there, then Quit Activity Monitor.

People on the adobe forums have tried this with varying success. Sometimes multiple times before it worked.

I suspect it's just trying to gather too much non-updated info, and is choking. So maybe self-inflicted to a degree.

Our licenses, which I assume the Adobe Secret Police have been monitoring on a daily basis, are valid.

Anyone have any thoughts on this, or experience of same?

Macintosh / leap to 10.12.4...Heeeelp!
May 07, 2017, 12:10:07 AM
Just got around to needing the scanner driver for the Epson V370 Photo scanner. Downloaded relevant driver. Installed yada...
Easy Find doesn't come up with the app.  :undecided:

This is all that's showing up in Easy Find.

Macintosh / Black Magic proofing from an '04 Mini
May 02, 2017, 04:55:49 AM
More Mac than proofing, but both. We send some big files across to the Epson 7900. The one that was going across I noted was 2GB. This is an oversized, 4 up A4 with wall-to-wall image/colour.
But this hasn't happened before, It was buffering with difficulty, by the looks. Percentage count of Send in BM's print queue rose only slowly; Epson would stop, do a few passes.. stop.. etc.
But it would stop just after it had covered 2 pages, then cut off into the tray.
It would proceed to do this again..seemingly in an endless cycle.

The whole thing managed to Image & render in BM, though slowly, just couldn't fully print.
The PDF Export, which we use for late proofing sometimes, (make that half the time in the last 2 weeks), was slow, but eventually crunched made it across to my Desktop.

Question is, what can I do to look at ?virtual memory allocation? Maybe some cache cleaning?
Am nervous to do too much, because that is all this thing's done for (gulp) 13 years, and I don't want to upset any (?required) custom settings that maybe BM needs.
Ended up the day Force Quitting Serendipity Client, and gracefully quitting Serendipity server.
In the morning I'll shut down the Mini, leave it off a few minutes, restart, then get BM up again.

For the press proof, (hard ones are not going out, due to latendess), I'll have to bodgy a page pair in XMF, of the 2 that wouldn't finish printing, and tape em together. But this is a 1st.

Anyone got any clues on this?

I've done a HiRes flatten on all 4 pages on that forme. Nup.

I've Placed each of them in Indy and reExported to our presets. Nup.

Back to the serial substitution of Blank pages to pinpoint it.

On 10.6.8 still. Despite this, it's a rare thing to get a non-render.

Enfocus / Lab text
April 02, 2017, 10:59:52 PM
I missed this, and I shouldn't have. Only a 20pp A5 so not so bad... If it had been CMYK, I'd either have been able to use Change Specific Color, or an EAL.

As it was, I did it manually, page by page, at least by first selecting all on that page wit Select Similar, so not all bad.

But, (and I could be, of course, quite wrong on this), I could not see where I could do that colour as a GC or an EAL.

How do they even do Lab as the text colour, anyway?

Just wanting to see for 'next time'. Oh and yes, I "Removed ICC Profile'.

Oh, I spotted it on first set, so didn't make it to press..

(see screenshot).

Opened up the home Mini and had a red disk icon for SmartReporter in the Menu Bar. And a message pane --->(Imminent disk failure)
Also something about Growl being listed, but SR couldn't find yada...so couldn't pursue the check.
(the last time I even thought about Growl was my now-ex work compadra laughing herself silly on Day 2 about the double entendre for cunnilingus, when she first saw it on the work iMac... I miss her for shit like that.. ;D  )

Here's the screenshot for the Disk Verify. Should I relax and get another cuppa tea?

See attached. We're gonna get an upgrade across the board 'real soon now'... but in the meantime, this is a total piss-off.

On 10.6.8. PitStop 12 Update 3

Have run applejack deepthroat. Persists still. Any other things to try?

Enfocus / Why isn't KO giving me white box?
January 02, 2017, 06:30:42 PM

Normally, this would be a no-brainer. I have to convert the process blue to Spot and redo the plates, (roller marking..  )

It's already set to KO in Inspector, but when 'Hide Selected' for image, getting blue underneath. In its original form, XMF is honouring that KO, as plates are good.   :banghead:

Adobe Photoshop / Deep Etching services?
December 11, 2016, 09:13:46 PM
Hi guys,

Anyone know of, or have used, a reliable/competent deep etching service offered?

Our head office creatives are looking for such, and relatively urgently.

Can't see why it couldn't be 'offshore', depending on bandwith, (I have no detail as to file size/nature of job at this stage).

We're in OZ (just a reminder.)

Diddler, you may of someone here in OZ.

Thanks

Windows / Downloads via Remote Desktop
October 06, 2016, 05:55:55 PM
One of our in-house dezingers uploaded4 large ZIP'd files to HighTail. SOP...normally not a real problem.
I get SMS around brekky time fr manager saying he's (via remote Desktop fr home), downloaded em into a folder where we access such jobs on their office server..

I get in to work..try to unZIP em, showing 'corrupted/can't open'.
He tries same thing (he's on a Windows machine in the office). Same result.

I go back down and re-download from links on her original emails. All goes swimmingly. She's on a Mac. I'm on a Mac.

Any ideas as to why this might be happening? Bear in mind he'll be terribly defensive and invoke the Shaggy defense if I imply it may be his route causing it.

Fujifilm XMF / Characteristaion Curves.
October 03, 2016, 11:20:30 PM
Can anyone throw a screenshot or two? Tweaking in a high-risk environment is not something we do habitually, but I'd like to explore some options regarding tweaking colour on the odd page in a fraught job.

I believe you can Opt/click on a page and bring up curves. Tooling around have not found it.

detail if required but TBH you'd be asleep inside 1 minute.
