Cool Glad to hear About the NAS's... Always wanted to start from scratch. Think it be the best way. I could never get anywhere.... Last i knew they lost the password?

Yeah, Thanks! Part'n-ways for a little is bittersweet. Change is good sometimes...
Needed to clean-up the Resume.

Yeah, did not know about that with forums. Be cool to see ya on G+. Needs some cool Prepressers over there.
Lots of GOOD info archived here though. Sorry to hear that with forums...Thanks for putting this site up. Always helpful. Everyone...

Freelance / Re: New to Freelance
May 18, 2013, 07:02:11 AM
I've just started Freelancing... The idea with the Biz cards & go around to ALL the local printers.
If you know Graphic Design a BIG plus. Can work from home mostly...
Gigs i get require me to go in & set-up new systems. Help with Color issues. File issues, etc.

True.. get a lot from old jobs. Works out better sometimes 1099. Gotta save all your TAX money. Pay Qtrly if Possible (or save in account. DO NOT TOUCH. Save all Receipts for Gas, etc. etc. So you can deduct from earnings, when possible)

Freelance can be hard & rewarding at the same time. Printing is Still & Always going thew changes.
Learning WEB design & App building is my next goal... I look at it as printing on Screen. Easier to match.
If you can beat it... Join it. I look at it like this... If we can Master PrePress. We are Tech heads .... we can Master the Web!
Next Goal is HTML5 & Android apps

Retrospect & Tapes. meh. Feel your pain...
There is a way, i believe... you can choose to back-up w/o Retrospect BS compression?
Been a while... We lost a few. (you can send them out...as you might know... data recovery. Sometimes can get. Cost a TON thought $$) Hmm. We had the same Sony think? Thought it was backwards compat?

After that we moved to NAS. (then some freelance IT guy made a complete mess of it All)
Really just needed to build a Real Server & have a Few NAS as redundancy. (I feel 3 copies are needed)
Local (Working)
NAS Backup
NAS or Cloud backup... Offsite (in case of fire...knock on wood)
(we only did the 3rd one once... sadly)

After loosing files. GBs are cheap now... Just finding the right system.

Joe, hows your backup going? ReadyNAS's work out still?
I'm laid-off from my last job & did not get to setup our system. (Got Real slow... past few summers. Doing freelance now. Enjoying it...)

Been a while since i've been here... Setting up a community on G+ 'PrePress'
Feel free to add. Just started for fun. Was thinking about B4Print.com (Thought Hangouts would be cool... If we ever need to Really see what someone was talking about)
Dont see ya on G+?
(sorry to thread jack.. )

General Prepress / Re: Large Format Inks... Where to buy?
November 27, 2012, 08:58:11 AM
Thanks for the links! Want to look into both...

does anyone have DesignJet 5500 & what about Replacement inks / printheads?
Worried about remanufactured cartridges... are they just as good? Has anyone used them for long period of time, etc.
Looks like they are guaranteed... like to try them in another DesignJet 5500 UV ink printer, we got from our new shop.
Was left behind. Been sitting a while...
anything i should know about b4 replacing whole ink system, printheads, etc.
Haven't fired it up yet. Still dusty, needs cleaned off... But lines look like they got air in them. hoping just self purges.
Really haven't had to fuss much with the HP DesignJets... they just seem to work. (Knock on Wood)

General Prepress / Large Format Inks... Where to buy?
November 20, 2012, 07:59:44 AM
May have asked this before... its been a while.

Been buying inks for our HP designjet 5500ps from Mac Mall, Media too, believe it or not, they beat out HP pricing.
But, got a crappy sales rep... HP reps are worse.

Anyone know of a good place to buy inks?
Time to price shop...

General Prepress / Re: Mac Mini Server?

Ok...Cool thanks!!
My brother was talking about SSD, how fast boot time & seems faster on network. So, i'll mention that to my boss.
Think it comes with 2 - 1TB drives standard.

As far as redundancy... was thinking Time machine to a Good external drive & backing up to NAS at night.
Think thats safe...Right? (should be a good Triple Redundancy)

General Prepress / Re: RAM issue??
November 16, 2012, 02:04:03 PM
Yea, they sure are making some funky looking RAM.
(not sure if its something to do with heat sink or ECC error stuff to help prevent bit switching (what I read googling around looking for these weird sticks))

As always, Thanks Joe!
Was wondering what OWC was when ya'll were talking about ram.
If you trust them... i trust them.  :goodpost: :ninja2:

Plus i want somewhere that backs their product, has return policy, etc.
We got CAP acct with Mac Mall. But, its taking the rep a WHILE to get our Corp site setup.
Looking around to price shop them too. not always the best deals.

Think Apple just wants people to buy new products... instead of being able to fix ourselfs
or make it too much of a pain in the ass.

Wonder how hard it is to work on an imac? Havent had to joy of replacing anything yet... cuz we just got them less than a year ago. Hope we wont need to... By the time they need anything. Next Gen will be out anyway... for about the cost of repair mby?
Everythings getting Faster, Cheaper... not sure if Better.
Guessing apple thinks this way too?

General Prepress / Mac Mini Server?
November 16, 2012, 07:06:00 AM
http://www.apple.com/mac-mini/server/

May have posted this before... sorry if so.
Keep seeing this Mac Mini server. & we want to move all our art files to a Mac.
(we dont have an extra one around thats good enough for a Server)
use our Netgear ReadyNAS as backup only.

Never had a server before. Is this a good deal? Does anyone have or would you buy?

General Prepress / Re: External Time Machine Drives...
November 09, 2012, 06:04:53 AM
Yes... agree. Lesson learned. Wont buy referb HDs again. Period.
Want good solid warranties on all... Should of posted here first. My first mistake.
But, live and learn... Learning saving a buck is risky. Glad 2 of the 3 Drives seem fine.
3rd is on its way back to Lacie.

Thanks for the feedback... And was wondering about usb 3.0
(the Lacie drives we got have firewire & usb 3.0..main reason i bought... hard to find for $70 bucks. BUT, in my gut... once i got them. Wanted to send them back. Looked CHEAP. But, Apple was advertising them on their website? So.. i trusted Apple guess)

Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm is what is in my Mac ... sorry to hear that about your Segate Drive.
Was hoping to stick with all Seagate drives...
What are most using??

But thats good to know about Apple eliminating All firewire ports (thanks Joe) going ThunderBolt & usb 3.0
(was wondering about the if the ports were usb 3.0 yet?)

We have issues with our ReadyNas still. (have not had time to get at it... Still waiting for password from old IT guy?)
So my boss wants ALL art files back on a MAC & a ThunderBolt external for Time Machine for backups.
Then we can Begin to ReBuild our ReadyNAS system... (thinking from above posts... we should be able to somehow Time Machine backup All our Macs to the ReadyNAS system? (5 Macs Mby) OR is it better to have stand alone externals for Time Machine Backups??)

Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm is whats in my Mac... was hoping to stick with All Seagate drives for now on.
(sorry to hear that about your Seagate drive Farabomb...hope you get it working. Wanted to go to Best Buy and get a 2TB Seagate external for $110 this weekend to test out.)
What are most people using for replacement HDs? & having good luck with.
