I'm not a fan of windows 10 so far. Nothing seems to be where it should be and since this is also a tablet I get extra bullshit. One day I booted it and the desktop was replaced by a bunch of tiles. Seems it somehow went into tablet mode and I had no idea.

Newegg and microcenter are my goto places for PC stuff. I'm not a fan of Dells because they are the ones I've had the most problems with. HP has been my choice lately. Are you getting a desktop or a laptop? Some of the newer laptops are pretty beefy and should have no issue running AutoCAD. Make sure with whatever you get to have a SSD and max out the memory. Either have it speced that way (more expensive) or add it later. My new laptop was slow as shit with the stock HDD but the SSD made it worlds better.

Joe's idea of a 8g thumb drive is a good one. I use them as well but instead of throwing them into a drawer, I tape them inside the case if it's a desktop. For laptops I use micro SD cards and stick them in the external enclosure I use for backups and storage.

HP, Toshiba, Lenova, Acer, and anything not named Dell are dead to me because of all the crapware they put on their machines. Dell's are lean, clean, and mean.

Nothing a nuke from orbit fresh install won't fix. In fact my new one was a HP open box from BestBuy. They neglected to reset the password or give me one so I was locked out of my brandy new laptop. A few hours later and fresh install and it was mostly good to go. After I cleaned up some of the bloat still left.

You're telling me that dell ships totally clean, not even a trial of office or anti "virus" software installed? Not sure I can believe that.

My next computer will be a self built one even if it costs more. My last build is over 10 years old and has been underwater while running and is still fine. Yes, some parts have failed like RAM but since I buy Corsair I have a lifetime warranty. Last time they asked if it was OK to double my RAM because they don't make a kit that small anymore.

Windows 10, even if you buy a clean retail version, has the MS Office bits embedded in it. It isn't installed but the installer begs you to run it. First thing I do is uninstall that.

The only AV is the built in Windows 10 Defender and the only other software Dell puts on it is their recovery, diagnostics, support and driver update agent. All other stuff is from Windows 10 itself.

I have bought and setup 12 of these since the first of the year here at work.

Edited to add: These are PC's that have MS Windows 10 Pro. Not that crappy Home version which I believe does have crapware/junkware.

Tracy if you get the Dell make sure it has Windows 10 Pro on it. I've been buying the 3050 model with an i5 CPU and 8 GB of RAM. These are for office use. Not heavy duty stuff. Usually around $529 - $589. Tracy since you are going to be using AUTOCAD I would get one with the i7 CPU and at least 16 gb of ram. It will cost more but will be worth it. As farabomb said....get one with an SSD in it if you can afford it. A 500 GB SSD can be had for around $100. I saw a 1 TB on Amazon for $198 a couple of weeks ago. Also if you get picky with the specs I just mentioned you might have to order it direct from Dell as newegg.com usually just has the generic office PC's.

Well you convinced me to at least look at Dells when I go to get another laptop. I second the windows pro option as well. The home versions are always crippled in the most annoying ways.

I picked up a 500g samsung 860 EVO for $91 on amazon about a week ago. It's one of the best SSDs out there. There is also a pro version that wasn't worth it for my application but you may want to look into it if it helps with AutoCAD.

I haven't bought any Dell laptops recently so it could be different for those over desktop pc but I don't know why they load them up with crapweare and not their desktop models.

Tracy I checked prices at Newegg and if you want one with the i7 CPU and 16 GB of ram the price is double or more of the price I listed above for the i5 / 8 GB ram models we've been buying for office use. But as the old saying goes...you get what you pay for.

If you want to try and avoid the crapware, go with the business class as opposed with the standard home/small office. As they know the business class need to be down and dirty, and will usually have their own setups. SSD HDs are a great option, but as far as RAM, I usually buy the minimum, and then buy an upgrade right away from another retailer, as it is usually cheaper that way. And it's so easy to install. Plus it's always nice to see the insides of your new computer. But make sure you power up the computer first to make sure everything work before installing new RAM.

Tracy, about the disks, it is for the emergency restore disks, or like Joe mentioned, create it to a flash drive.

Looks like I came to the right place for questions!
Aren't you guys suppose to be MAC people?

Going to print all this out and study it

Well we have strong opinions on a lot of things. (not necessarily correct though  ;D  )

I've had 2 Dells - one new and one used, and not impressed with either (both laptops). The first had a multimedia package installed with "better" speakers, etc. but it had the damned noisiest fan ever! Even with the latest and greatest processor at the time, it was s-l-o-w!

The second was just cheaply made and got super dinged up with just normal use. It gets super hot and shuts down due to poor ventilation. It came installed with Vista which was shit. I did add RAM, change out he HD to 1 TB and upgraded it to 10 and it's still "in use today," but the card reader and camera don't have 10 drivers, so if you try to use them the machine crashes.

I don't know about Joe, but I definitely am! But like all things, you have to adapt. Plus I used to sell computers, and I can tell you, it sure was easier making money on PCs with their markups than with Macs. And since I was the network specialist for a typesetting company among other things, you have to know a bit of everything, which I learned.

And especially now, they basically are all the same, except the software that runs them.

I maintain all of our computers here in prepress, offices, bindery, shipping, trucking company. Macs and PC's, laptops, phones, GPS devices, networking, routers, switches, printers, telephone system etc...and oh yeah, some prepress too.

So went looking at computers to try and figure out what model I want to get.
The sales guy was saying something about some computer don't have video cards?
I have my system requirements and I need a specific minimum video card.
He was saying something about the video being done in the processor? That's why I walked away from him. (not helpful)
Going to take my sys req to school with me and see if the teacher can help.
also how do you find the properties on a PC, I am going to check what the school computers have in them.

Joe

Many PC's these days have the video built into the motherboard and they use the system CPU and RAM which is not the best thing for something like AutoCad. So yes get something with a separate video card with its own Vram and GPU that meets the specs for AutoCad. Just make sure it has the right ports for the monitor you are going to use.

The best way to see system what is in an existing system is a 3rd party tool called Belarc Advisor (free).
