Interesting - thanks!

A LOT more work than I'd ever perform, particularly when it didn't even appear on the final piece but at least we can try & tell the customer what NOT to do. I'm sure they'll appreciate the insight.

Quote from: Skryber on September 11, 2023, 08:14:54 AMI have this problem in Illustrator when I outline fonts and then divide them out of shapes. I have to find a work around just to show the proof. Can you open in Illy and try switching the viewing between CPU and GPU to see if it changes? I'm interested too if you want to send me the file.
Nah, CPU vs. GPU made no difference. I'll PM ya the file link though.

Huh, I resaved the original out of Illustrator (since it was an Illy PDF to start with) and the weird object disappeared with OS Quicklook. It kinda doesn't show up in Preview, except for certain magnification levels. I did notice a "cover-up" box they added below that area, but whether I delete it or not - doesn't matter.

Right, I told them the same thing - just curious why it didn't show up in wireframe even. It's a brand new (larger) client so trying to set 'em on the right path from the get go - we'll see how that goes.

Adobe Acrobat / Errant Object in Preview

Strange one, trying to Soft proof a PDF out and client is complaining of an "odd item" above a letter in the Proof. Can't see it in Acrobat but it definitely shows in Preview or Spacebar-Quicklook in the Finder OS. (I know, I know - neither one is the right way to check a PDF, but I can see what they mean at least. I assume they're viewing on mobile.)

Attaching the Preview & the wireframe from Pitstop to show there's NOTHING there. I ran an Epson to assure them it's not going to print, just not sure wtf it is in the first place! Leftover "ghost" object from Illustrator maybe?

There was one, I got in about 20 minutes late but they definitely had it running. Some stuff about adding a Varnish layer, Preflight Profiles and whatnot. I wasn't paying a lot of attention and then I had to jump into another internal thing. Maybe look for the replay?

Duh, make the physical size of the pages 20% of their original measurement. Problem - SOLVED!!

Fujifilm XMF / Re: Upgrading/Replacing the Server
August 23, 2023, 11:42:24 AM
Quote from: RMPrepress on August 23, 2023, 09:59:25 AMI'm quite certain Fuji is going to want a hand in setting up a new server or else you will own it...meaning support may be cut off.
My understanding was, the server has always been "owned" by the end-user – they didn't provide support at all except for the software. That's why I'm thinking I might as well spec/build the new one ourselves. I'll put a call into Fuji Support though & report back.

Fujifilm XMF / Upgrading/Replacing the Server
August 19, 2023, 01:24:13 PM
Our XMF Server is 6+ years old, and the OS of course is also that old. Wondering for the sake of security (mostly our IT folks pushing that line) and stability/longevity has anybody put together a new RIP?

I suppose I should reach out to XMF Support, now that we're legit again, and get specs for what we'd need. When we bought it, of course they supplied the hardware but there's no reason I can think of why I couldn't order a pre-built machine & reinstall the RIP ourselves.

Enfocus / Switch Update Woes
August 07, 2023, 12:32:37 PM
Not really a cry for help but this is amusing.

We're finally updating our Switch Server to the latest release, with the help of a consulting company & also rebuilding the Flows to generally make it useful if all goes well. So we backed up everything & did the updates on Thursday. Friday I come in to a warning from the Outlook Admin:

"User SWITCH_NOTIFICATIONS@YOURSITE.COM has sent messages to 10000 recipients in the last 24 hours"

:o

Note sure what it did, I assume maybe some logfiles that should've been getting cleared, weren't, and after the update it grabbed ALL of those old jobs & tried to re-process them. At least that email only goes out to me, and I don't believe it blacklisted the rest of our email service like would have happened if it was sending them to external email recipients. Good times.

Our Color Calibration guy left me a VM a few weeks back saying that we'd likely start getting ink carts without the dreaded Chip & we need to update our Firmware. Has anybody heard of/seen these yet?

I assume that the proofer will still see the other carts we already have on-hand with the chip, but I'm hesitant to flash the thing just yet.

The Rest... / Re: SmartStream Won't Impose

Quote from: David on July 06, 2023, 07:50:09 AMdid you check the smart stream prefs to make sure they are set correctly. I had mine quit one day for no reason, the prefs lost the printer IP for some stupid reason.

Yeah, that was one of the first things we checked. Not really a lot of options in those Prefs either & nothing looked out of order. /shrug

Quote from: DCurry on July 06, 2023, 07:49:07 AMI use SmartStream a lot and have seen it do a lot of weird things (I call it ShartStream) but this is a new one for me. The workstation in question wasn't upgraded in any way recently, perhaps?
Not that I could determine from the Op, although eh said this morning it "just started working again" after he'd restarted InDesign a few times. Not ideal, as I think it will happen again - I'd like a definitive answer.

He also didn't place a Service Ticket as I'd told him.  :ohno:
We'll be doing that tomorrow, HP should be aware of it in case it happens again.
