Digital Printing / Reviving an HP1055 wide format
September 27, 2012, 09:06:57 AM
had a power outage yesterday, it hosed my HP1055cm+. it boots, passes self test, but then it gets about 10" into a print then goes into printhead alignment mode, then freezes up.

it will successfully complete the alignment when picked from the service menu, but for whatever reason, it keeps re-entering it during a print, but freezes, and then i have to power it off to get it back.

tried/checked everything i could, even re-seated the ram.. is there a service mode on these HP printers that give more info?

any ideas?

Random Technology / Samusung AllShare
August 21, 2012, 02:44:40 PM
ive been drinking alot of the Samsung Kool-Aid ever since i got my glalxy-

now, after helping my dad move, i picked up his 3-month "old" Samsung 56" LCD.. My visio 42" is securly mounted on the fireplace, so i put it in the bedroom, its REDICULOUS.

The picture on the thing is really incredible. super-dark blacks, and the refresh is fast. the picture even "moves" different, its hard to explain, but awesome.

anyway, the TV has built-in networking for inet and other apps, which are really crappy, but im really stoked on Samsungs native "All-Share" - the app snoops your local network - PC's, Tablets, Smartphones, HDD's - anything with a public share and makes the content avaialble for streaming, and it works with ABSOULUTELY NO DICKING AROUND WITH ANYTHING.  I can even stream video from the galaxy phone to the tv with no setup - just like the commercials.. you hit play on the phone, and a box pops up on the tv asking for permission to play

i guess i never had anything that just worked like it should (not even my crapple stuff) - it got me a little excited.

the only thing that sucks is there are no "physical" buttons on the set, the glass is touch-sensitive.  trying to touch an area, in the dark, with no tacticle feedback is really challenging..

curious if anyone out there has figured out how to extract a file living in a mailbox on a Canon (c6000) or any canon MFC (not thie Fiery RIP).

got a bunch of scanned jobs parked, would like to PDF them.. theres no "official" canon tool that will do this, but im thinking maybe..  I can browse the c6000 via web interface, look at particular pages of the job, but theres no option to export.

last resort is just to print them and rescan into a PDF, but i was hoping to skip that...

Bindery / Parts supplier for IDEAL cutters?
February 23, 2011, 06:40:19 PM
we have an IDEAL 5221-95 cutter we use in our copy center, and the strut that holds up the saftey door crapped out.  Instead of paying the local guy $400 to fix it, do you guys know of a distributor where i can get this kind of stuff?? (a parts supplier)

Ok, so i assumed "text" and "book" paper specifications were interchangeable. I have a whiny client that is complaining that i used "80# text" on the job instead of "80# book". She cant tell the difference, except for the fact that i wrote down "80# text" on the workorder. "Text" - grade papers are generally un-watermarked sheets, as opposed to "writing" grade.  where does "book" come in? is it the same? This is all un-coated stock.

I'm feeling kind of lame even posting this question after as long as i've done this job, but i want to be sure.  im confused.

Windows / making explorer thumbnails larger
December 02, 2010, 10:00:48 AM
heres an easy registry mod to make the thumbnails larger in windows explorer (winXP)

yeah, bridge facilitates image browsing a lot easier, but if youre just poking around and tired of squinting, its a big help..

#1 - Go to the "Start" menu and click "Run."

#2 - Type "regedit" in the search bar and hit "Enter."

#3 - Click the "Plus" (+) icon to expand the folders in the Registry Editor. Navigate to the following location: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer."

#4 - Click the "Explorer" folder.

#5 - Look for the "ThumbnailSize" key. If it is not there, you need to create one.

#6 - Right-click on an empty space and select "DWORD Value." Name the key "ThumbnailSize" (without spaces).

#7 - Double-click the "ThumbnailSize" value to edit the size of the thumbnails. You can choose Hexadecimal or Decimal. Decimal values range from 32 to 256, which converts to 20 to 100 in Hexadecimal values. As you increase the value, the size of the thumbnails increases. Increase the thumbnails to a size that fits your preferences.

Anyone have a RISO/duplicator in the shop?

Thinking about picking up a refurb to do short run 1 and 2 color envelopes. More concerned about print quality,  color is not critical.

Any other suggestions?

InDesign/Illy CS 4 - PC:

im trying to paste some preformatted text blocks from illustrator into indesign, but when they are pasted, the text is chopped up into small containers or outlined.  Is there a way to do this and keep in editable?

Ok, I asked for .csv address lists, and got a mailmerged word document that was created from one.

Does anyone know if theres a way to remove the formatting and create a text-based or .csv file from the merged word doc??
