Title: adware
Post by: Tracy on May 23, 2017, 11:58:31 AM
I got an adware today, I got Web Root and it didn't find it.
I found the files in the application folder. they were called optibuy and core updates
I crossed my fingers and deleted them, had to shut down to empty the trash
I had upgraded my flash player, I must of not had the real flash player?
screen shot of the adware, my internet was useless before I deleted the files

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

free ....works great..gets rid of Genio, maccleaner..etc.

Run it everytime my kids get off Steam...that platform is ripe with adware.

Thanks Santa!
I will save that, I never experience it.
Web Root scanned my other mac and it was the Adobe Flash Player upgrade

Any time I get a pop up saying my Flash Player needs to be upgraded, I go get the upgrade straight from Adobe's website. That way you know you got the legit package. (Course, my system's too old now to upgrade it any farther.) That goes for any other "helpful" popups. Always get your updates from the legit website.

I run across a lot of websites that display a page that my flash player is out of date and to click this button to fix it. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, click that button. If your flash is out of date you get a prompt through the Adobe updater....not from some website. Any warnings you get from websites where they want to help you are adware, malware, trojans, worms etc....no one on the internet wants to help you when they flash these messages up on your screen. Flash needs to be killed. It is disabled by default on almost all web browsers that are up to date. You don't need flash most of the time. Do away with it if you can. Same for Java.

And a big second to malwarebytes. Their free version will fix almost anything. And the Pro version is worth every penny to keep you from getting it in the first place.

thumbs up to malwarebytes from me as well.
Does a great job, and it's free!

I will forth Malwarebytes. It's the first thing I install whenever my computers get all squiggly. I've almost thought about the pro version but I have to stop having hardware failures on laptops before I buy it.

I have malwarebytes too, and it's not annoying and does the job. I think you can install on 4 machines with one license, too

Forgot but they only have the free version for the Mac. No Pro version for Mac which is windows only.

Just remember Tracy...if a website pops up a message and wants to help you...99.99% of the time it is something bad.

It seems to be even worse on a cell phone. All I wanna do is play a little solitaire, but it's tied to ads. I snagged some free (not public) wi-fi, and kept getting ads telling me to push this button because I have a virus or my memory is full. Heck, I haven't used even five percent of my memory, and besides, I'm not as stupid as I look. But I can imagine the people who panic as soon as they see the word "virus."

These guys are no better than the ones calling me telling me my Windows computer is calling them for help, when I've never owned a Windows.

I get a lot of those calls too. When I am in the mood I have a little fun with them before they get pissed and hang up on me.

I read about a guy who would let them remote into a VM he had set up, only he had set it up so they couldn't get anywhere or something similar. They really got frustrated. He also found out that Indians know the F word.

This is a new thing a lot of "marketing guys are pushing" it's location based advertising with a geofence (defined area of space). When you connect to their wifi they can attempt to "side load" and app..i.e not through an app store. Most of it is just annoying ads from car companies, but some of it can be real nasty.

Thanks for the heads up santa. I almost never hook up to the "free WiFi" because I know the shit they pull. I even avoid hotel WiFi because I don't trust it. I've had unlimited data since verizon first offered it way back when. I knew how things were progressing. I knew smartphones were going to be big and data was going to cost.

Thats the best practice...have you ever read the terms and conditions on those splash screens before you connect to "free wifi."
NSA treats your privacy better than what those terms say :sarcasm:

I wouldn't use public wi-fi either. Mine's at home, just don't know how long I'll have it. It's unreal how many ads tell you something's wrong with the phone. It's also scary to think how many people will fall for that.

I'm very positive.

Positive most everyone is getting dumber.

It's so cute to see both sides tearing at each other, flinging shit and so forth not realizing the totally obvious fact that both sides are one in the same. They are not out for anyone's best interest, only their continued lavish lifestyle provided by those that are screaming at each other defending their "side". Purge those fuckers, banish the fanatics on the left and right and maybe the humans left might be able to have a discussion and work some shit out.

The thing is the bar has dropped so low that it's like getting a gold in the Special Olympics.

My computer is hooked up to the TV so it's been running 24/7 for about 2 years now.

The nexus 7 and galaxy 10.3 tabs have about 2 years of dust on them. I really should at least set up the galaxy as a TV remote. I don't know why more phones don't come with IR blasters. My m8 is the most expensive remote I've ever had. It's also fun to screw with the TV's when you're bored at the bar.

When I started my Mac at work yesterday and launched Firefox for the first time of the day and it loaded a page that said my Mac was infected with Koobface (https://www.google.com/#q=Koobface). Which was odd because after we had mentioned malwarebytes here the day before I ran a scan and it came back clean. The page said if I closed the browser window it would erase my hard drive and gave a 1-866 number to call Apple Support. The number was not an Apple Support number. While the window was open I ran malware bytes again and it came back clean. So I force quit Firefox and rebooted and it came back OK and when launching Firefox it went back to the home page just like it should. Obviously it was a fake web page but still haven't figured out how it got there to launch automatically when I started Firefox.

HIjack your homepage?
Title: Re: adware
Post by: Joe on May 25, 2017, 08:38:30 AM
No, when I opened Firefox it opened my home page in one tab and the Koobface warning in another. Looking at Firefox prefs the only homepage listed is google which is what it should be.

You may want to run malware on all the boxes there. It may be broadcasting from another computer.

Yeah and we have plenty of PC's with idiots behind the wheel. So far I haven't seen it on any of them.

Makes me wish for the early days of the internet to come back. When browsers were first starting to multiply and you had to enter all of your personal information separately for each one you could search the web basically anonymously if you never entered all that personal stuff. Then it moved to the computer preferences so all the programs could "share" and you only had to enter it once. Now you even look at the internet and your computer broadcasts every single detail of your life to the world.
:git off mah lawn:
The older I get the less I actually do on my home computer.  (Still sitting all day in front of the one at work though)

I haven't cracked open my laptop at home in months... sitting on the side table next to the couch. Use it mostly to charge my phone and bluetooth speaker (for my iPhone).

Stop burning up your laptop battery and pick up one of these.

https://smile.amazon.com/Anker-6-Port-Charger-PowerPort-iPhone/dp/B00P936188/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1495800398&sr=8-5&keywords=anker+usb+wall+charger

I'd also suggest their powerline and powerline+ series of cables. My power port came with 6 tiny cables but I bought 2 6' ones so I can relax on the couch and charge. Most of their products are very well made and they go on sale about every other week.

Keep an eye on this site and they will keep you abreast.

So I was finally able to take a look at the virus search logs and I found it interesting that of the 2 things, one was searchme@mybrowserbar.com.xpi in the firefox folder. I haven't used firefox in years so I don't know how that could have gotten in there. I did see one mention of a cnet download possibly be a cause and I do believe I visited cnet for something in the last year but that really doesn't mean that's where it came from.

I only use a old ass version of chrome and an equally old version of safari. I'm wondering if I should uninstall firefox. The only reason I'm not doing it already is if chrome and safari have issues I won't be able to install firefox because any existing download won't be old enough. I've tried opera and it just laughed when it saw I was on SL.

Anyway I just thought that maybe something outside of firefox may have infected your install.

If that was the case it seems like it would affect more than firefox. I had a old outdated google bookmarks extension loaded that might have been some of the problem. It's web address now just goes to some kind of parked domain. I uninstalled it and see if that cures it.
