Title: Burning Disks
Post by: Tracy on January 27, 2021, 11:28:17 AM
I use to burn disks on the old G5 Mac worked great for years
I have not had good experiences burning disks with an external hard drive
I have gone through enough externals, I now have the Apple external reader,
I think it's a burner too but not going to use it.

so anyway while I was out the G5 died and I'm wanting to get another one since
it was so reliable in burning disks, can anyone help me find a G5 for a good rate?

I found this but there isn't any info, if there is a burner etc.....
Thanks for any help, not very good at this stuff

If you are willing to try again, I have had 100% success with LG superdrive... like this or similar... cheap too.

really? I go through those just using it for reading and cataloging
well the last one went out when I was out on disability.
do you burn disks with 4 GB of data at one time?

I got this one before the Apple reader and I broke it too!
well the guy covering for me did and I was only using it for a reader
as when I would burn dvds I would get an error message

https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MR3UBDRW16/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_campaign=googlebase&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6v3S-tm87gIV7j2tBh2PmwZhEAQYASABEgJKUfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I would rather not get the G5 and get a burner but I'm jinxed I tell you!

Me thinks I don't put the same mileage on mine as you do yours, if you've had issues, don't let me talk you out of your plan?
Title: Re: Burning Disks
Post by: Tracy on January 27, 2021, 12:24:38 PM
yeah I really should learn to just use the Raids
but nobody else here would be able to (seriously)
right now I back up the Raids onto an external USB
so I know there is a capability of getting more raids
and just storing the raids as disks

I burn disks and catalog them

What brand of DVD's are you using? Good quality DVD's?

Internal or external shouldn't make a difference. I've got an external burner from macsales.com and haven't had any issues but I'm sure I don't burn near as much as you are.

Man G5's are running on a power pc chip. I think OS X 10.5.x is the latest OS you can put on it. Talk about old school. :cane:

When it comes to media, I have burned literally thousands of DVDs (and a few blurays and hundreds of CDs) and NOTHING beats RiData when it comes to not making coasters. Also, they are not the cheapest, nor the most expensive; just right down the middle... but I have had WAAAAAY fewer issues with RiData.

IF you have the option, dual layer is the way to go, but it is more expensive.

Thanks I will check this out
Thanks guys!

and Joe, yes I know the G5 is old but all I need it for is to burn disks,
it was a work horse for that!!

Just need to figure this out, I think a high end disk burner is the way to go
digi your suggestion is made in China this will be a last resort for me, looks like good products tho.

know anything made in the USA?

Just to throw this out there but you can buy a 1 TB (1,000 GB) hard drive for around $50 which hold up to 250 DVDs content and it is a heck of a lot faster than burning DVD's. You can buy internal hard drives and put them in this to archive to (see attached image) and then when done put on a shelf. You can also use Disk Catalogue Maker to create an index of every file on the hard drive. And of course you can buy much larger hard drives than 1 TB. I think a 4 TB internal HD is around $100 or less. This is what we currently do where I work.

yeah, get away from those DVDs.
there was a time about a million years ago where we ran into only an older Mac being able to read some super old DVD archives...
after that nothing could. Big box of coasters! Things like that happen over time.

Joe, the picture shows 2 drive slots of different sizes,
but in other pictures it shows 2 full size HDs in the slots.
Is there a cover that comes off to allow for 2 full size HDs in the slots?

looks cool, may need to get one.

So do you back the files up or relying on the drive to last a long time?
I guess I'm relying on the disks to last a long time, but like Born said
I wonder some day nothing will read them
Title: Re: Burning Disks

It's been 15+ years, but my old old bosses insisted that we burn backups to CD x2. He then made an argument I couldn't reject: It's cheaper. It's smaller. It's redundant. And if a CD gets destroyed, we only lose 600mb of jobs.

But yes, do the thing Joe said. Those were different times. Dark times. Let's never speak of them again.

Another issue with DVDs is that after a long time, you'll need to build another building to store them  :P
Title: Re: Burning Disks
Post by: DigiCorn on January 28, 2021, 11:23:21 AM
No kidding. I think we had like 83 binders of CD backups... and then a phonebook with job numbers and disc numbers cross referenced by binder number to find the freaking disc we might need from the archives.

And now that company is defunct. All that work for jack shit.

The cover flips down out of the way with the full size drive. It has an opening for the small drive so it doesn't need flipped down for the smaller one.

You do your backups to the hard drive you put in this device. When you fill them up put them on the shelf. Don't get me wrong hard drives can go bad too but I have hard drives made in 2012 that still work fine. Technology can always bite you in the future but it is a risk with any type of backup medium.

10600 or SSD would work but will be more expensive. For backup 7200 is fine for me. For SSD to get the speed benefits you would have to have USB 3 on both the ends of the connection. If one of them is USB 2 you won't see any speed benefit from an SSD.

How did I miss this Burning Beach thread. I love how these threads change quickly sometimes. We backup with a NAS with multiple HDs and RAID (Bug OFF!). But really like Joe's idea better than CDs, as I've had backup CDs fail more than old HDs that I've put on a shelf. And we also use Disk Catalog Maker, great little program.

what scheme would I use Master Boot Record?

hmm, I do have a PC would that be the place to initialize to NTFS?

going home soon be back tomorrow!!

Title: Re: Burning Disks
Post by: Joe on February 09, 2021, 12:45:11 PM
Do not use MS-DOS Fat. You will hose all of your long filenames and you willl have a mess on your hands if you ever need go back and get any files from your backup. Not sure if your NAS can but mine can initialize the hard drive as NTFS. If yours will allow it do that. If not hook it up to a PC that can.
Title: Re: Burning Disks
Post by: DigiCorn on February 09, 2021, 05:49:08 PM
MS-FAT does not equal MS-Phat. It truncates to 8 digits, like in the days of yore. We have progressed since the dark ages and have expanded from 2 digit years to full length times and dates and filenames. I can't even imagine what wreck of a system still uses MS-FAT... probably still gorges itself on 128 oz. full sugar sodas and plastic straws. Just say NO!

Title: Re: Burning Disks
Post by: Joe on February 16, 2021, 12:40:00 PM
Tracy, I would let the NAS format it to whatever it wants even if the Mac won't read it because you should be to access the contents over the network when it is shared out of your NAS. Are you backing up from a Mac to the hard drive or from the NAS to the hard drive. I was assuming the latter. If you are backing up from the NAS to the hard drive hook it up directly to the NAS and let it do the backup because if you use your Mac to do the back up from the NAS to the hard drive hooked up to your Mac it has to backup across the network it will use Mac resources which will slow down both your Mac and the network. It is horribly inefficient to do it that way. But if you are backing up from the Mac to the hard drive use time machine and time machine will tell you it have to format the hard drive and time machine will do it the way it wants it.
Title: Re: Burning Disks
Post by: Tracy on February 16, 2021, 01:08:26 PM
Ok I understand what your saying I will attempt to format from the NAS
I'm not sure If I can format from my NAS, I will try viewing the drive from the NAS tomorrow
I got so busy lately I just want to work on this gosh darn it!!

worst case I will format the drives correctly on a PC and back up from the NAS to the Drives
I know I can do this as I am already doing backups from the NAS to an external USB Drive everyday

I will make sure I have those formatted correctly as it looks like I'm able to start moving files

If you have it connected, you should be able to login to the unit via web browser, either through a generic admin login or through the ip address. Once in the Linux menu, formatting should be an option. Check the manual for the address.

I can see my WD and all the shares etc.. I don't see any options to format any drives there
I will check again but I googled and looked in the manual nothing about formatting any drives there
which is ok as long as I can format the drives I just bought!

According to the manual for the WD My Cloud Pro series NAS it supports FAT32, NTFS, or HFS+J but it doesn't say it can format the drives.

Any old PC you have laying around the shop that is running Windows XP or later should be able to format the disk to NTFS.

well... if you can see it in windows, you should be able to select the drive, right-click it and select format.

Yes that is what she is going to do because from the NAS interface it doesn't appear to have the option to format a USB disk.

Hey thanks!
I'm going to take them home and format them, the first drive I formatted on a PC here at work seemed weird
maybe it was an old PC not sure.
It may have formatted correctly but I'm just not sure, going to take my time now and get this right.

Joe!
I'm formatting those drives at home, super easy with the right computer!
Not sure if I need to give these drive letters I removed them while formatting
but now I'm wondering If I do need drive letters.
If I do need them, how would I do that after formatting?
I'm only going to be using these on a Mac

I did figure out how to add a drive letter, just need to know if I need that

Nope. Once you unplug them from the PC the drive letters disappear and won't be seen on the Mac.

Unless you mean the volume label which can be anything.

No I meant the letters, which I removed
and I named the disks the way I wanted to!

Thanks so much Joe
I'm ready to archive!

Archived a years worth of files pretty smoothly.

so If I clone Hard Drive 1 to Hard Drive 2
and put more stuff on Hard Drive 1 can I reclone without issues?

going to clone on Monday

I have so much room left on drive 1 it's going to hold so much more!!!!
sheesh you guys been telling me to stop burning disks for so long!

Sorry to chime in if I am uninformed, but could HD1 and HD2 be set up as RAID and then the redundancy would be automatic and instant with no need to clone?

If you do it that way...when you clone it the second time it may tell you that it is either going to erase hard disk 2 or it will tell you there isn't room on hard disk 2. So basically I think when you clone it will clone the whole hard drive. Not just the new stuff. You will end up cloning the stuff that was originally put on hard disk 1 multiple times.

If you use a backup plan do a full backup from hard disk 1 to hard disk 2 the first time and then later do incremental backups so it only backsup new or changed files you'll save some time.

But cloning is faster so if you can wait until hard disk 1 is full before doing the cloning you'll save some time that way.

Also never fill the hard drive up fully. I'd leave about 50 - 100 gb of free space. Hard drives do weird things when they are completely full.

It probably could but she would need a device to put them in that supports raid setups. The device she has doesn't support raid.

ooh so glad I asked!!
Thanks!

Born, I have a Raid for my files, I'm using this new docking station to back up files that I use to burn to disk
but I think your right I could automate backing up, but I use my exterior USB for daily automated backups.
This is all new to me but shoo wee I see the benefits already, I had my "Prepress file" I use to back up that wouldn't fit onto 1 DVD

so easy peasy, so grateful!
