Digital Printing / Xerox Versant 2100?
September 11, 2014, 12:55:54 AM
Had a demo last week for this machine - we are in the process of updating a Konica Bizhub CS650 - I was kind of impressed with the print quality and build of the machine - anyone else had a look?

Heidelberg / Suprasetter Error
August 27, 2013, 11:52:48 PM
Hi my Suprasetter A74 has been playing up a bit lately - I keep getting and "Motor End Stage Error" The business owner has no service contract on this machine so I have to trust my local Heidelberg guys about parts needed for the fix - tomorrow I have a new motor and belt going in.... hopefully this fixes the problem. If not it may be an encoder failing - another pricey item.

My problem, but any thoughts would be appreciated.

Enfocus / Where's that gone!
February 05, 2013, 05:32:31 PM
Okay - I'm trying to find a window that will show me the size of selected objects in Pitstop 11

Simple work - as in version 7 I'd select similar strokes and view it's measurement properties to give me a physical size of a die shape.

This seems to be different in 11 - probably missing something blindingly obvious.

Macintosh / Files Updating!!!!
November 28, 2012, 09:18:24 PM
I've got a workstation - Mac Mini running OSX Lion 10.7.5 - It's giving me the screaming shits! - We have about 4 workstations and we all view a server over the network (our rip) - okay we've got a folder on the server that holds all our pdf's for our workflow - only on this box if you mount the server it will start updating the creation dates of the pdfs - a real pain when using Signa Station - I'm thinking it's rebuilding previews of the pdf's - anybody got any ideas?

It's a stinking hot day over in my part of Aus - I need a few beers!

Does anyone have a pdf of a GTO 52 Masking Sheet - showing Gripper positions Lay's etc - I'm after one to lay down over SM52 plates so as to trim to size and allow for perforation positioning on a GTO 52

Thanks in advance from downunder

General Prepress / Watermark Security Thingy?
May 24, 2010, 08:40:56 PM
I've got a customer who wants to us to produce a printed job that when photocopied comes up with a COPY watermark? ..... I've had something supplied in the past that gives a VOID copy when used in a fugitive ink on a cheque - figure that this would have to work out of a screen somehow - any help would be appreciated.  :embarrassed:

CTP - CTF / JP Imaging Plate Breakthru?
July 20, 2009, 06:57:05 PM
Anyone got the poop on this? looks kinda interesting... if it's got legs - plain aluminium plates - no emulsion - no chemistry - re-usable - 2 years away from market... Schizer! I may have just wasted a lot of time researching our next platesetter purchase?

Pressroom / Letterpress Revisited
February 16, 2009, 12:44:12 AM
Okay... I've had some ol' school kooky fun last week! - I've got a pair of designers who really! really! want to do some letterpress printing - their own business cards letterheads etc. We were interested, so it was up to me to chase down someone who still set lead type locally. Had to do a bit of poking around but finally found a lovely old chap who has a working Ludlow machine & piles of racks of different type faces (Brass Mats) for the Ludlow.

I've gotta say it's been a really fun exercise - we've got a Heidelberg Platten that still has all it's rollers & bit's to print - Okay I'll own up... years ago I started in this trade as an Offset/Letterpress printer before moving to prepress when Macs made the first inroads.

I spent quite a few years doing jobbing work on a platten, so i'm kinda taken with revisiting the skill & craft to get the results these designers are after - nice impression on a toothy stock with a little bit of (human feel) in the result - It's interesting I've started appreciating natural kerning & odd leading - oh.... and I'm looking at my large shed at home and wondering if I could fit some old machinery in there? I've fallen in love with the Ludlow

Do I need to start taking pills?

The Rest... / Digital Envelopes?
December 16, 2008, 06:44:34 PM
Okay.. not sure were this topic belongs - maybe the too hard basket?

We run a lot of 4CP envelopes on our SM52 Five Colour - which our printers are always moaning about - fair bitch I suppose - some envelopes can be a real pain thru the press! We've also got a nice new Konica Minolta Biz Hub digital machine that can run a 487x330mm sheet.

My question is anyone running flat sheet thru a digital device & then making them into envelopes - does such a benchtop or similar device exist for such a purpose without having to purchase full blown envelope making equipment?

General Prepress / Digital Numbering on NCR?
August 04, 2008, 10:35:53 PM
Okay we're a mid size shop that does a fair bit of numbering work on our SM52's and a couple of GTO's - we put in an OCE CS 650 digital machine & had XMpie (variable data app) thrown in with the deal.

Numbering set ups are eating into more press time - we're looking at pre-perfing sheets & running thru the OCE to print & number - it has plenty of bins so we can run up to 6 different sheets if we have to. More work for prepress I know (and it's not particularly sexy at that!)

Any one else in the same boat?

CTP - CTF / Processless Violet Plates
April 28, 2008, 08:08:50 PM
I've got a Heidelberg Prosetter 74 that's capable of 30mw of power - been trying to get a straight answer if it will image the Brillia HD PRO-V plate to be released at DRUPA. Any Ideas?  :peep:

CTP - CTF / Processless Violet Plates?
December 20, 2007, 07:46:51 PM
I'm hoping that next year see's some movement on this - we'd been looking at going process free thermal & upgrading our Heidelberg Prosetter (running violet plates) but after reading this article I'm thinking it may be wise to see how the mop flops next year - any thoughts?

General Prepress / Digtal Print Info
October 23, 2007, 06:48:46 PM
We're thinking of replacing our colour copier - OCE CPS700 (we've got this hooked into our Heidelberg workflow and use it as content/soft proof option) with a OCE CS620 copier - this is basically a rebadged Konica Minolta Bizhub Pro C5500 machine - Schizer! sorry about all this product code.....

Anyway's anyone got anything good or bad to say about this beast - we're getting good feedback from our clients when we show them test prints.

General Prepress / Descreening
September 18, 2007, 06:45:07 AM
Had an interesting job run thru today - brochure supplied - Indesign file - that needed a pic dropped in - only existing reproduction of said picture is previous print run from somewhere (or so our lazy rep said!) I've been doing less & less scanning over the past few years - so I fire up the old Lanovia and run thru a few descreening options to try & get a reasonable result - I'ts all looking a bit sad - get the loupe out to have a closer look at supplied print - using my good eye! and spy some kooky stochastic dots - shiezer! - ended up having to scan unscreened! - had to laugh when it finally hit the press - had a nice eliptical dot representation of a stochastic pattern.

Adobe Acrobat / Live Transparency
September 12, 2007, 06:16:09 AM
I'm working with a Heidelberg workflow - prinect meta & signa - I'm looking for clarification on what Live Transparency means - We create most of our pdf's from native files sending to distiller with a preset for our workflow + we get a lot of supplied pdf's which are preflighted thru Pitstop. - I realise there's probably a few questions here - Does Live Transparency refer to a direct export as a pdf out of - say Indesign?

I understand that my workflow has to flatten the transparency in a pdf when it converts it to a 1bit tiff for plating - I know most vendors are incorporating the new Adobe pdf rip (engine?) into upgrades - does this mean that transparency will no longer be flattened as such?

Thanks all!

General Prepress / Offshore Print
September 10, 2007, 05:49:47 AM
OK - I'm Southern Hemisphere, but wondering? just this last year I'm seeing some regular walk-in customers shopping in China for print - I'm talking jobs around $2000 AUD - are you guy's in Northern parts feeling this?
