Title: Time Machine and OS Install
Post by: Tracy on November 26, 2018, 09:25:13 AM
Going to start with Time Machine
Is it possible to do the Time Machine backup on a WD Raid disk?
the you tube video of the kid in his bedroom shows backing up to an external plugged into the computer.

I have a share on my Raid disk that says Time Machine, but I think it's to back up the raid?
I'm already backing that to an external.

I'll be taking my time with this, updating the OS is freaking me out a bit so thanks in advance for patience!
thinking of doing a clean install on 1 computer for now.

Some external HDs/NAS/RAID/Servers work. Some don't. At home, I know one of my NAS drives specifically has a Time Machine option you have to check, "on," in the GUI to make it work. Around the office we just have little WD 1TB externals plugged in to everything... the cheap little $99 kind.

Ok yes, I am speaking of NAS Raid
and it does have the Time Machine share on it.
It won't hurt anything to try, sheesh I should of been doing this already!

Yep should work with the RAID. You can either use the Time Machine software built into the RAID or you can just mount a network drive on the Mac and point Time Machine to it and backup that way. It will take longer to backup/restore across the network than having a HD directly connected to the Mac.

wondering if it will slow down the network for everybody if I backup to my raid
I could just go the external drive route

If you have gigabit ethernet (1000 mbps) it will actually be faster than a USB 3 external. Of course if your network is not gigabit (fast ethernet (100 mbps)) than the opposite is true. If your network is 10 mbps then you need to upgrade your network.

I think we updated our network when we moved here, I will do a double check
so much to learn!

Work slower. They won't upgrade as long as you are going fast enough. :rotf:

already having an issue, not a major one tho
I'm not seeing my NAS in the option to pick for backup, I see another WD drive, but I don't want to use that one.
I may have to use a USB drive to backup to.

Hmmmm...it appears Time Machine no longer allows backups to network drives. I am pretty sure it used to. :(

You may have to turn on the option for Time Machine Backups in your NAS and perform the backup using it.

Did that, I think there are some pretty big steps to use the NAS
easier for me to get a new external USB

The story will continue next week!

No not annoying at all. The manual will most likely give you better answers though!

whew! Goody, I am freaked out about installing the OS, not going to do it till next week
what am I going to forget to backup, that Time Machine doesn't backup?

Workspaces
Printing presets
Pitstop actions
Command workstation

Will I be able to just move apps from time machine?
like excel, word, etc..

Title: Re: Time Machine and OS Install
Post by: Joe on December 07, 2018, 04:16:18 PM
I'm afraid not. A time machine backup restores the whole system including the current OS. I mean you can drag applications back from the applications folder of the time machine backup but that will only give you the application file and not all of its associated files in the different system folders. Smaller apps might work OK by just doing this but you will more than likely need to re-install most of your more complex applications from the installer. Then you can drag back the preference files if you need to get your preferences back.

What exactly are you going to do? What OS have you got now. What OS are you wanting to install?

You can install a new OS over the old OS and your applications and files should all still be there and work. But if you are wanting a clean install there is no easy to get away from re-installing everything including all of your applications.

I have 2 computers so I'm planning on moving my pitstop over to Mac6 and doing
a clean install on Mac5 (slightly faster computer) since I have 2 computers I figure
I can get through this (with a little help) I will leave Mac 6 on El Capitan for now.

Since I don't load aps very much I will have to struggle through it
like Command workstation, Office aps, Printers etc..

I'm on El Capitan not sure what OS I should update to-High Sierra? Mohave?

Tracy, don't forget you can use ScreenSharing so you wouldn't need multiple keyboards and mice. Plus you could put the second Mac anywhere, even in a spot where there isn't much room or just enough room for the Mac. And then you can log onto it from your "main" Mac. I use a nice little piece of software to see our "shared" Mac called "ScreenSharingMenulet", which puts it in the menu and makes it really easy to access.

I can tell you Creative Cloud and Pitstop both work on Mohave. I prefer to be on the latest release if the initial bugs have been worked out and I think mostly they have been with Mohave which has been out since September. If your XMF client will work on Mohave and anything else you might need I would upgrade to it.

Screen sharing is an option as Scott says however I prefer the Apple built in screen sharing instead of a 3rd party app. Just seems more fluid using it to me but that could be because it is what I am used to using.

Joe, it's just a quick way to get to use the Apple's default system. Just so you don't have to go to a finder window to use it. Once you select the computer it opens up the same interface.

I have the Apple screen sharing app in my dock so when I launch it I just pick which Mac I want to control from the list of recently used ones and I am then at the desktop of that Mac. From there I can do anything I want with that Mac.

Never heard of screen sharing! Hey this may be something I might be interested in, I will wait till I get through the OS install

I'm going to lose XMF on Mac5 anyway - no license update
so I think I will go Mohave.

Thanks Guys!!

Moving pitstop 2018  from Mac 5 to Mac 6
Mac 6 still has the inactive 2013 on it
I think I need to uninstall 2013 before putting 2018 on?
I can't remember how to uninstall pitstop :-[

Pitstop 2018 will overwrite Pitstop 2013. If you uninstall it not sure but it might delete any custom actions you have. Upgrading from one version to the other will keep them.

preparing for OS install-not doing it today, making sure Mac 6 is up to speed before I do it
Mac 6 is pretty much identical to Mac 5 regarding prefs etc.. so I'm not so worried, plus I copied
all my prefs and scripts and plugins. as far as I know

Do I need to manually uninstall anything before the clean install?
I am going to read up on it before I do it, but any tips are welcome!!!!

Do I need to download the os onto a flash drive?
I have 2 drives 1 is fusion I don't think the os goes on the fusion

I will read up on it and then ask the questions!

If you have creative cloud installed you should log out of it before you start. If you have Pits top activated on it you should de-a ctivate the license before you start.

To do a clean install you will need to create a bootable flash drive of the installer so you can boot into the installer on the flash drive and launch disk utility so you can initialize the internal hard drive before you start installing the new OS. For that you will need something like this:

DiskMaker X (https://diskmakerx.com)
Title: Re: Time Machine and OS Install
Post by: Tracy on December 10, 2018, 04:12:22 PM
Huh! so you don't just download the os and put it on a flash drive?
So when I go to erase the hard drive do I erase the fusion drive too?
or does it erase that during the install?

Post by: Tracy on December 10, 2018, 04:22:25 PM
Ok I looked into the disk maker X pretty cool! thanks!
I found a page of instructions I will read it. I need to get a USB - again!

Didn't Apple add a hidden boot/restore partition to all their computers? Hold down command+ option+ R or something to boot into it it. It lets you wipe the main drive via Disk Utility, and restore/install the OS. If I remember correctly, there is an option to reinstall the factory default OS, or install/restore to the latest OS available.
Title: Re: Time Machine and OS Install
Post by: Joe on December 10, 2018, 06:18:48 PM
I think you can do it from recovery but you will still need the new OS on a flash or external drive. It won't install the newest os x on its own unless the computer came with it installed. Unless they have changed that recently.

Title: Re: Time Machine and OS Install

Yeah from the app store it will download it and start the installer. At that point you just quit out of the installer and it will leave the  "install Mac Mojave" file. Then you run DiskMaker X and point it at the installer file. WARNING: It takes a long time and you will think it has died. Let it go until it completes. If for some reason it never completes you can actually do this yourself from Terminal without DiskMakerX. I would have to google the instructions if you need it.

I'm going to slowly prepare for an OS install
Is Monterey ok? or is it Big Sur to install to avoid prepress problems?

I'm going to wipe the computer clean and do a fresh install
I want all my ducks in a row before I start

XMF will not work on Monterey. Their latest version is compatible with Big Sur...assuming you have the latest version. I would steer clear of Monterey for a good bit.

ok good to know, I have another Mac right next to my main Mac just for XMF
I haven't updated that Mac since El Capitan
I don't update it, just for XMF it's a 27" iMac, what a waste!
I don't have a license for XMF, I did however meet someone recently who may have an updated box for me
we'll see.
