Nexscan 4000 Issues

So, a little back story: We had this scanner running in our location since it's purchase back in the early 90s, but when we were purchased about 5 years ago, they moved the NexScan to the other location, since we're apparently not worthy of such a fine piece of hardware. (We got stuck with the Scitex Smart 340L flatbed. Still a decent scanner.) Fast forward to last week, they laid off so many people in that location, nobody left knows how to use the Linocolor software & it's shipped back up here. We still have the same Graphite G4 & LinoCOlor 6.0 installed that it's used all along.

Only now, even though the Mac starts properly, the scanner never initializes completely so the software won't function. The only change we made, was to update the OS to 9.2, I believe because we wanted the same G4 to run both scanners and it was necessary. Anybody still running one of these beasts or have any recollection of them being persnickety like this?

I would try re-installing the SCSI drivers for 9.2. Possible they may have never update them past 8.x though.

Good idea, I'll have to yank the card out & see which Model we've got here.

Thinking about this, it won't make a difference. The scanner isn't initializing at all, and it appears this has happened way back when it was fairly new too. Some days it starts, other days it doesn't. Amazing that Heidelberg walked away from this segment of the industry eh? I'm going to call around, see if any of our regular repair techs know of anybody who can work on this thing. Otherwise, it'll make a nice anchor for the Owner's yacht I s'pose.

There are several things that might make your scanner work.

1. Shut down the computer and scanner.
2. Start the scanner first and let it go through its boot cycle. If the light still flashes on the scanner, don't worry, yet. But give the scanner time to boot - maybe 10 minutes.
3. Start the computer 2nd.
4. If the light is still flashing on the scanner you need to find the drop down menu item marked
Special Scanner Functions
it might located under Scan
then look for the menu item
Reload scanner software
Click the button to reload the scanner software.
Give it time to reload. On an older OS it can take awhile, maybe 30 minutes or longer.

2. If that doesn't work, you need to find ALL of the preference files for the Linocolor and delete them.
Shutdown both computer and scanner and restart in the order in #1-#3.

3. If that doesn't work you need to delete the Linocolor software and all the preference files. Restart the computer.
Reinstall the Lino software and do a restart of the computer.
Shut down and follow start order in #1-#3 and follow the steps again.

Heidelberg updated the Linocolor software to NewColor. It had problems and Heidelberg was in the middle of fixing the bugs when it exited the sales of the scanners. the Lino should work just fine in 9.2

If the scanner light source won't freely move during start up, make sure the mechanical locks are removed. Someone might have locked the scanner down to move it. Lock  down should always be done.

Consider running the scanner with a PC. But it needs to be an old Pentium, like a P3 or P4. SilverFast makes a NexScan software package if you want to upgrade.

It's a great scanner. But it has its moments and they are usually operator induced.
