Kodak Systems / OSX version
September 05, 2017, 11:22:53 AM
Is there a recommended Mac OS for use with Prinergy? We're not using that many apps outside of Adobe stuff and Suitcase for fonts. Right now we're running 10.10.5 Yosemite.

Thanks!

We recently installed Prinergy Connect 8.0 and have been running along pretty well. Until a job came up that printed alright but the epson proof we output was off. After doing some testing, we got the proof to output correctly by enabling Overprint Handling in the Refine and Output process plans.
We enabled it in our process plans and it really slows everything up now and seems to cause errors due to the heavy CPU usage it takes.

I opened a call with Kodak on getting some guidelines on when or if Overprint Handling should be enabled. Their answer was not helpful at all. "It really depends on your workflow" Then they copy and pasted the help section on Overprint Handling. Ugh

Anyone have any experience with this and have it enabled in their normal process plans? Anyone mind sharing screenshots of their Refine process plans? I think Prinergy 8 added a lot more settings than I remember being in 6/7.

Kodak Systems / Archiving Prinergy Jobs
May 27, 2017, 11:28:44 AM
Since we didn't purchase the Archiving option for Prinergy I'm trying to come up with an alternative way to "Archive" jobs.My thought was to copy the whole job folder to external hard drives and then delete them off the server. That way the history stays intact and if we need the job we can just copy the folder back onto the Prinergy server.

Anyone know of any downsides to doing this? Anyone have an alternative solution? We need to keep all files in the User Defined folders which can get over 100+ GB.

General Prepress / New Workflow
September 02, 2016, 02:03:42 PM
I'm shopping around for a new prepress workflow and am hoping to get some opinions. I'm looking at Apogee and Prinergy right now. I've had over 10 years experience with Prinergy before and always thought it was solid. No experience with Apogee.
If money weren't a big factor, what would you prefer to work with?
Also looking for proofing suggestions.

We're a medium size commercial printer running web and sheetfed presses. No plans for digital. No MIS integration.Workflow currently is AE & Nexus combo. Proofing through KPS to a couple Epson 9900's and an Impoproofer. Plating to a Screen VLF platesetter.

Thanks

Kodak Systems / RBA - What has it done for you?
August 28, 2016, 01:59:07 PM
Hey all, it's been a while since I've been on here. I've never used RBA before and am wondering if it's worth the price. We are a web and sheetfed printer doing a variety of products. No digital printing. What kinds of things did RBA do for your company?
Since every job's a snowflake and unique in some way, what things can you automate?

Fonts / Zero kb Fonts
July 29, 2014, 01:59:59 PM
We're having a problem with some fonts loosing their resource forks and showing as 0 kb. Is this a problem with the Mac OS or Windows Server 2008 OS? What are other shops doing? The few times this has happened in the past we just found a different flavor of the font that worked.

Right now, we have an InDesign CC 2014 file that the customer packaged for us with the fonts. On my OS X 10.8.5 machine, the font goes to 0 kb. On another mac with OS 10.6.8 the fonts are OK. But InDesign CC 2014 doesn't run on anything older than OS X 10.7. So the customer must be running at least OS X 10.7 and can get the fonts to work.

I know this has to do with some kind of resource forks getting lost mumbo jumbo. I'm not sure what to do about it or what to tell my boss and client.

We're finally transitioning to Preps 7 from Preps 5.
We normally save a template for every job we do, just in case we need to add ghosting bars or special id tags, etc. Usually we pick up a template, modify it and save as a new job number, not recreating everything from scratch. It seems like using the folding pattern way is kinda like recreating everything from scratch for every job. Is there really a time savings to doing it this way? Is there any other benefit?

Also wondering if people are creating a paper stock for each weight/manufacture? Seems like it would be useful for the different calipers and doing creep/bottling.

We're still negotiating training, so right now I'm trying to figure it out solo. Not sure if having 15+ years of Preps experience is a benefit or hinderance right now.

Any recommendations for software to create printer and monitor profiles? We have an iOne Pro and we used to use ProfileMaker Pro but it doesn't run on the new OS. Anything inexpensive or free?  :lmao:

Fujifilm XMF / Prinergy to XMF
January 23, 2014, 09:42:17 AM
We're possibly going to switch from Prinergy to XMF.  For the past 11 years Prinergy has always worked well for us. Our first choice would be to stay with Prinergy but the $$$ savings is hard to pass up. If we stay with Prinergy, we're upgrading to Prinergy 6 from 5.1.2. Either way we'll have some learning to curve to go through with a new interface and switching to Preps 6 or whatever XMF uses.

We have both web and sheetfed presses. No digital, yet. We print spot color and straight process jobs, some spot varnishes. Saddlestich and perfect bound books / publications on the web press.

Has anyone here made the Prinergy --> XMF switch? Any impressions of XMF in general? Anything that hasn't worked out with XMF? Can XMF swap or map colors to other colors? We refine a lot of jobs where we have to remap colors. Is there anything like VPS on XMF to check varnishes and backup?

Thanks

General Prepress / Large Banners
January 07, 2014, 11:16:24 AM
I have someone that needs a trade show banner made. Approximately 8' wide x 3' tall. I'm not sure where it's being made so I can't get the specifics on how to set it up. Are these generally designed in RGB or CMYK? Should the resolution be 300 dpi or is lower OK?

Any other tips or suggestions?

General Prepress / Network Attached Storage Suggestions
December 09, 2013, 09:14:28 AM
Any suggestions on a NAS for archiving from Prinergy? I'm thinking 4 or 5 bay. I really don't want to build something so off the shelf solution would be best. And as per the norm these days, cheap but with great performance and easy to use.
