Title: 2nd interview - oh boy.
Post by: t-pat on November 12, 2009, 10:47:49 AM
Well, after looking on and off for over a year for another prepress job I am being called back for a 2nd interview at a place that might be suitable for me. Having mixed feelings about my current job as some days it is pretty ok, and other days I wonder why I even took it on.

Money talks I guess, if everything else is right and it puts me back to the wage I was accustomed to when I took on a hefty mortgage then maybe it is time for a change.

Hmm, meeting with my boss today was weird. He's now talking about sinking resources into this division and doubling or quadrupling sales, which he said means possible 6 figure salary for me.

Smoke is getting in my eyes from being blown up my a$$

Maybe 6 figures means 0000.00 or maybe he just wants you to work 20 hours a day 365 days a year?

Yeah lol.
I'm salary here and it's a seasonal business so it'd be difficult to find something to do that many hours a day. I have a hard time finding 8 hours of work to do off season sometimes. That will change though if I'm still here come January when our season starts up again.

Sounds like you'll suss things OK. Whatever environment you end up in, there's a shed-load of experience here if you get in a jam. (Myself excluded from that group of folks...).

Good luck in your decision. Carrots being dangled, by the sounds... :undecided:

I hope I can add to the experience as well as glean from it here. Sure are a bunch of smart folks here.

Yeah, the carrot thing. I really wonder where it's coming from. Just had my annual review, which was good, but did not include anything I could take to the bank (company wide freeze on increases, yadda yadda b.s.)

It's a lot to think about, bottom line is that I don't have a passion for this business, and there's one person here that I really cannot stand, I'm supposed to play nice with her, and this big future is hanging off her efforts as head of marketing. I don't have confidence in her abilities to do this, and I don't have confidence that she'd be replaced if she didn't perform as expected.

Gut-level feeling is the way to go, prolly. Too many unknowns.  The inner game of prepress...  And sounds like your gut-level is not likin' where you are.

Must be the fear of loosing good workers
I was called to the board room yesterday and offered a pay rise (not much) as recognition to my good work
"You deserve more blah blah, .........recession blah blah.............work increased but cost to the bone, blah blah.......thank you!"
I must say that it felt good
Good luck tpatterson
I must admit that I wouldn't bother to look for a different place doing the same job, not even for money

QFT - and this is why I'm not out the door already - I like the people I work FOR, and a lot of people in this company really make it worth doing - however -
I'm not currently doing prepress, it's a management gig I currently do in a division of the company totally unrelated to printing - I have no passion for this business, I do for printing, strange and stupid as that sounds. I understand it a lot better than this business, or at least I think I do. After 10+ years in print shops I would hope I knew my way around better than something I've done for 1 year.

I used to do prepress for this company, and have been exiled to the island of forgotten toys after being canned (for helping a csr understand exactly why I wouldn't touch his self-made nightmare) and rehired 6 mo later in this job.

oh biiiiig time - even better - "Untouchable Blood Sausage" - the kind that must have something else going on that prevents them from being canned, because if it was you, you'd be long gone.

I had one once, untouchable... he's gone now.

It took me three years of relentless bitching, but when Management finally realized I was on the level, it was a matter of hours.

The prepress blood sausage I had is still there, sitting in my old chair, collecting my paycheck. Still useless, blind (literally can't see the damn screen) and can't follow the simplest of policies or procedures... I nearly killed him when I caught him opening my pdfs in Illy - when there were already native indesign files all complete and pretty just sitting there. That's a management issue - he's not untouchable, just comfortable. And he does whatever idiotic thing a csr asks him to do, regardless of whether it is right, wrong, or suicidal.

This current one however has a "hold" on someone and is nearly untouchable, short of having the same last name as the owners. I'm not sure to what extent it goes but I have a pretty good idea.

This one's not a family member - that I can live with, you take care of family. There's something else going on.

Nepotism is working for me.

Actually it's totally the opposite. I'm held to a higher standard and get yelled at worse becasue the boss is my brother. Yes I do get away with things that I would normally not get away with, like telling the bosses to fuck off on a weekly basis. They also know even with all my bitching and moaning I take care of the company because it's family. It's a balance. Another company we are involved with did the checks to family that have never seen the inside of the shop thing. That doesn't happen in my family, we're German and that shit doesn't fly. You must work in order to get paid.

I need to find someone to nepotise off - damn deadbeat or dead relatives are useless.

This place has family working here, but they all actually work.

What a coincidence... my place has family working here too, but they DO NOT work. It's like a Gub job without all the vacation days. You just CANNOT get shafted here. It takes an act of God and a big bribe.

Got an offer today.

Basically the same money I'm making now (I'm salary, this works out to like $0.93/hr less but there's overtime so it wouldn't take much to match it), same insurance but much cheaper (nearly half what I was paying before I decided I couldn't afford it), better schedule as far as commute, longer commute (15 minutes longer, 10 miles farther) but easier on the car due to it being mostly tollway/highway. I got ~5mpg better on the ride there and back than I usually do and shifted 1/10th as much probably.

Got some thinking to do.

Way to go! As for staying the extra week, are they willing to maybe pay you a bonus to do so? That might make it worthwhile to consider. Remember - you don't want to burn any bridges!

Gonna play that one by ear, my gut tells me they won't be giving me anything beyond what is legally required, if I'm lucky.

As far as burning bridges, I've done my best to avoid that, even gave them right of first refusal to give me a position in the printing part of the business, they declined. But everything at this point is ok, my manager just came by to tell me good luck and that I suck for leaving because he will have a hard time finding a replacement that will have what I have to offer.

Ok, well then, day 3 of the new job and nobody's screamed in my face, threatened to kill me, called me fat, or set fire to the place. So far, so good. Wow, they're organized too - seriously invested in computing power and technology.

No blood sausage to be found in prepress so far, it's me, the senior mac jockey who is the team lead, and a guy that does mostly design, but seems to manage to prep files just fine, and I think he can even use Preps if needed. Over us is the systems manager, who is damn good at all things prepress and of service bureau lineage.

Wait, that must make ME the blood sausage... HEY! damnit. :death: How did this happen to me?

Busier than shit too, I see job security as long as I don't screw up too much. Definitely no time to be hanging out posting on various unnamed forums for now. I can barely glance at my email on my phone.
