Digital Printing / Paper "scam"
December 03, 2018, 12:02:54 PM
Did anyone else catch on to this new trend in the paper industry? Now they're packaging 20# bond in 750s instead of 500s, 6 packs to a case instead of 10, so for each case instead of an easily divisible 5,000, you now have 4,500. But they charge the same price! That's the biggest scam since they started putting beer in 11 oz. bottles! Most paper trays are set up for 500, so now you have paper standing around getting dusty, damaged, etc., plus you have added labor costs dealing with overs; either repackaging for storage or the spoilage that wouldn't have normally occurred. Or if have a job that needs 10,000 sheets, now you have to order 3 cases instead of 2, for extra $$$, of course. Bunch of bullshit, man!

Macintosh / Mojave (and Acrobat DC)
October 09, 2018, 11:22:29 AM
Partner at work just upgraded to Mojave, and so far smooth sailing. Anyone have any known issues with Mojave?

Acrobat DC is a different issue. On Sierra, the upgrade on DC was annoying, but functional. On Mojave, it seems to be glitchy - doesn't display previews on "fit to page," when printing, crashes, etc. Anyone have any issues with DC on Mojave?

I'm still on Sierra.

2nd time this has bitten me now. On the previous issue, a 700+ page book randomly dropped images... the file was imposed 2-up, and sometimes images were missing on the left and sometimes on the right, but not the same images.

On the current issue, I imposed a 2-side letter fold brochure 12 x 18, but CWS took an image from the left panel and replaced an image on the cover with the same image, but only on one of the imposed brochures and not the second. It previewed correctly in the imposer, but not the rasterized .dbp file.

It looks like the workaround may be to save the imposed file as a pdf and not a dbp, but looking for a proper, permanent fix.

Adobe InDesign / InDesign mail merge question
February 14, 2018, 11:37:00 AM
Without the use of a third party plug-in or software, does anyone know how to remove a space inserted between two fields on the same line in the even that one of the fields is empty? I know if you click "remove blank..." it removes the entire line, but I just need to remove the space character between two fields...

OR

I need to merge the two fields together either in InDesign OR merge the two columns in Excel (also removing the space).

Digital Printing / In-House Mailing
February 13, 2018, 12:20:35 PM
Does anyone here in prepress do in-house mail merges and prep for mailing? I have a question about if you sort for trays, output, etc. in regards to your in-house procedures, to see if we can streamline ours to make it easier/better.

Interesting read. Just heard about this. Not sure what category this falls under.

We just brought the old Xerox Phaser 7500DN from the other shop to this location and are using it. The problem is, it is not downloading fonts when printing. It doesn't matter if you print direct from InDesign or a PDF with fonts embedded; it substitutes certain fonts. It also will not allow "Print as image," from Acrobat. Nothing on the Xerox forums about this and on the configuration page, I don't see an option to turn on downloading of fonts.

Adobe InDesign / PPML
September 20, 2017, 03:29:19 PM
Is there a way to export a variable data mail merge InDesign document to a PPML, without a 3rd party plugin like FusionPro? Has anyone used PDF/VT? We are looking at taking on a rather large variable project that pulls images from URLs, but the current file sizes are unmanageable and looking at ways to chew through the data faster,

The Rest... / Adobe Bridge CC2017
June 26, 2017, 10:44:11 AM
Anyone had luck using the "Output," feature to print a directory to PDF in Bridge? My partner here does it, but my bridge didn't have that feature. I Googled it, and it turns out you have to install it. I downloaded and installed and it shows up as a choice, but it doesn't work. Our systems are 100% identical except that I am on Sierra and she's on El Capitan.

Digital Printing / Xante Impressia
June 05, 2017, 10:43:35 AM
Anyone have one of these? It's basically an "envelope press," but ours also has twin drawers and we run 8.5x11 out of one drawer and 11x17 out of the 2nd. It also has a laptop connected to it that runs iQueue. Here's the issue:
We can drag and drop pdfs to iQueue and do what we want with them, but attempting to print direct only works 8.5x11. I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer on my Mac, and used the latest driver from Xante's website (it's from 2012), but when anything outside of 8.5x11 gets over there it denies and the screen says paper mismatch. I've checked drawer configuration and whatnot, but no luck. I can always print through iQueue no matter what... it's just extra steps. Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas? The driver and configuration on Mac in system preferences is unhelpful at best.

Adobe Acrobat / Embedding fonts in a PDF
May 10, 2017, 01:30:46 PM
We DO NOT have PitStop here, or access to PitStop. I have 137 files, and the fonts aren't embedded. They vary in page count from 1, to over 100 pages. They are not printing correctly, and do not display correctly on Mac, but DO display properly on Windows (but still do not print correctly). In the past, I open the file in Windows, save as a .ps and redistill on Mac and it solves the problem, even if the font still doesn't embed. But I have 137 of these and looking for a better answer. Any ideas?

I know I can use Acrobat tools to create a 0% watermark, and then use the flattener to convert the font to outlines, but remember I have 137 of these, so time is an issue.

Digital Printing / Mail Houses
May 10, 2017, 01:09:39 PM
Got a strange call the other day. My previous employer recommended me for a job at a mail house, and gave a glowing recommendation. Today I have an interview. Last week on the phone, they asked my salary requirements and I quoted them about $15k/year higher than what I currently make and they said that they were willing to pay. Now I don't know what to do. I'm working for the devil I know, but I know nothing about the devil I don't know other than it's a mail house with 85-100 employees and that can process up to 40 million pieces of mail a month. Has anyone ever worked in a mail house? Can you give me some insight as to what the day is like?

Adobe InDesign / Options when placing image CC2017
April 06, 2017, 03:34:24 PM
Does anyone know how to keep this stupid options "window," open all the time in CC2017? I'm constantly placing images or relinking images and sometime I want the "Show Import Options," checked and sometimes I don't, and I ALWAYS freakin' forget to expand this. I just want it open all the time like in the olden days.

[edit] can't seem to remove redundant pictures...

Macintosh / Prescient
March 30, 2017, 04:32:44 PM
My co-worker is running El Capitan and at random times, starting just today, her computer will hang for a brief moment and the word, "Prescient," appears at the top left on the system bar, directly to the right of the Appleā„¢ logo, and just to the left of what might normally say, "File," only when, "Prescient," appears, the entire bar briefly goes blank. If you were running a program, it appears where the program name appears. We cannot do anything to forcefully replicate it; it just happens randomly. It doesn't seem to impair any ability to do anything. I checked with the Goog, and He couldn't find anything on this subject. Anyone ever seen this before?

So, I've been at this company going on 3 months now, and it's been a fairly smooth transition, said for a few weird things, because that's just the way they do things around here, when suddenly CWS stops talking to the Fiery. Checked on the router - IP still shows up. Pinged it from every other machine, and it responded, so it's not a cable, or random DHCP IP address reassignment (it's static). Checked the IPv4 and it's all setup correctly with the right IP, Subnet and Gateway... so basically I've  eliminated any network issues and adapter issues. I'm thinking maybe there was some kind of software update or patch that's causing the issue, so I update everything (it hadn't been done in years) and it starts running again, so I think I'm done. Boom. Fiery stops talking to CWS again, so after  few failed attempts to reconnect, we call Xerox. The guy comes out and says that the Fiery cooling fan is so clogged with dust, it's overheating, and dumping the connection.

Adobe InDesign / Workspace preferences
March 13, 2017, 10:43:39 AM
Is there a way to save these somewhere? I've had to toss my preferences a couple times recently, and I really hate rebuilding my workspace each time. I'm kind of OCD about how I have my various tools arranged, and I'd like to just be able to drop in my workspace after deleting preferences, should I need to again in the future. I thought I had found (what appeared to be) a text file that I copied to the desktop and tried to drop it back in later, but it didn't work. Is what I'm describing even possible?

Macintosh / ReadyNAS as a Server
March 03, 2017, 12:17:33 PM
I split this off the old thread here: https://www.b4print.com/index.php?topic=9100.msg288709#msg288709

So this morning I figured out that the clock on the ReadyNAS is off and doesn't match our Macs. I theorize (without network knowledge) that this may be responsible for our lag. We have also discovered that rebooting every Wednesday morning vastly improves our performance as well. Still no ability to log in and look at it, but I want as much info as I can gather first.

The Rest... / "Grant Access" in Excel 2016
February 08, 2017, 06:15:33 PM
At my new job, we are doing a lot of variable data for mailing using the merge features of Publisher and InDesign. Yuck, I know. When we launch our Excel files, we get this button that we have to press that says, "Grant Access," and when we do, it denies it anyway and we an't get in. On Sierra for Mac. No such issues on the Windows side. Any ideas how to disable this feature?
