General Prepress / Re: No compete

It is uncommon for production workers.  Typically they're reserved for sales and management.  The question is, what do you know that's so valuable?

The Rest... / Re: Data Base / File Management
August 11, 2010, 09:01:41 PM
This topic seems a little too vague for us to give you a proper response.  If you're talking about asset management (such as artwork, etc...) that can be a totally different answer than say, job related data.

If you're talking about job data, the first question I'd ask is what kind of order management system your company uses.  If your company doesn't have an order management system, well, then I can see why your concerned.

For someone with no budget and some knowledge of databases and minor programming skills I'd recommend ms access.  Yes, I hate ms as much as any other god-fearing prepresser, but access actually has some pretty redeeming qualities.

Now, if you're talking about asset management, hopefully you have a somewhat decent naming convention.  If you're using access you can setup direct links to the directory of wherever that job's files are at.

Now, if you're talking about backups, well, that can be more complicated than I care to type.  I'd probably just keep it simple and setup a RAID to handle the data storage (CDs/Tapes/etc... suck).

Hope this helps.

ditto.  Often times I help the customer by suggesting different finishes and explaining a little.  But 9/10 its a usually a flood gloss varinish and/or UV coating (there is a difference).

Adobe InDesign / Re: Weird font problem

i would use something like fontlab studio and convert it to true type, and change all possible font names to what  you see in your find font window.

did she not even supply a hard copy mockup or pdf mockup?

I actually tried the demo version a while back...

at the time, they didn't want to spend the money so I stuck with Fontographer.

FontLab Studio is the end all be all of font editors IMO.  It rocks and is worth every single penny.

Yeah you must have missed something that's using that font.  Such as a blank space, blank text box.  Most likely that is the case.  Simply select all, convert to curves.  Another reason may be they have placed artwork inside their Indy file that uses that font too.  So your not converting that placed file simply through Indy.

I'm with Beermonster on this one.

hahaha, nah man.  It's stuff I DON'T want anymore.  Mainly odds and ends crap that is just taking up space.  It's either sell it or trash it.  At least this way I might make a couple bucks.

Adobe Photoshop / Re: Printing out_problems

Quote from: The Stevinator on December 11, 2008, 08:25:46 AMI can't say if that Epson is a PS printer or not, but keep in mind he could not have a RIP and it could not be a PS printer.  Thus forcing him to have to print from photoshop anytime he needs something.

It wasn't a PS printer.  Thus, any postscript sent to it would not print.

And no we didn't have a software RIP that would support it because it was some second hand shit that was included in a press purchase deal.

How would you configure the layout app then?  I had a HP 5000 and I always had to print jpgs or tiffs to the plotter.  Photoshop seemed to work the best.  I'm interested on how you would print a raster based image from a layout app.

Depends....what kind of RIP software do you want to put on it?  Configuring it could be a real B though.  I know when we had to build a new box for our Delta we ran into problems with the RAID drives not being able to write as fast as the computer could process.  I think the best thing you can do is build a box a little bit better than the listed specs and call it a day.

Another thing to look at is when your building a RIP is a RAID setup.  I prefer RAID 5.  Just glancing (I could be wrong) but I don't think that computer supports that.

Just remember you only need what the software really needs, and above all else protect your data!

bridge kinda sucks.

reader is almost as sucky

what david said.

and server version?  i'd rather just keep my folder structure thank you.  i can find everything much faster that way anyhow.

plus i wont have to tag all my damn files with meta data that way.

yeah, it's much more of a computer programming side of printing.  rather than graphics side.  i'm sure you'll get it though, just do a little research and think logically.  anyone who is good at prepress i think has the aptitude to do some programming.
