General Prepress / FSC Labels
March 19, 2010, 07:52:33 AM
For those that are FSC certified:

Do you supply your FSC label to the customer so they can place it into the artwork
or
Do you place the label yourself into the customers artwork??

On a side note, I got the new FSC label guidlines and they changed the color from PMS 378 to PMS 626. Here is the fun part, the CMYK values they have specifically listed for PMS 626 are C=100, M=60, Y=100, K=20.

280% Ink Coverage, for a PMS Color -- Awesome!!

General Prepress / Packaging & Die Cut Jobs
March 30, 2009, 06:49:47 AM
Am I the only one that gets pissed off when I get a packaging or pocket folder job with a Die Line where the entire job is built in Quark or to a lesser extent InDesign.

These knuckleheads will build a Die Line in Illustrator, place it into Quark then align their artwork to the "preview" of the Die Line in Quark.

Inevitably the die line is screwed up and I got to fix it in the EPS then when it updates it changes position and I gotta realign it back to the artwork.

I just had a job if it was built in Illustrator I could of fixed it in less than one minute. But no, lets build it in Quark, and now I got 45 minutes into the damn thing.

Just build the damn thing in Illustrator. You have the ability to line up the artwork EXACTLY to the die line. F**king USE IT!!!!!!!!!

There I feel better, Thanks.

Agfa Systems / Spot Colors
February 27, 2009, 06:47:39 AM
In case anyone was wondering, according to Apogee the maximum number or colorants supported by PDFRender is 63.

I know this because I just got a 20pg catalog with 131 spot colors. Each page was built in Illustrator, saved as a EPS and placed into InDesign.

20 Illustrator files.

When you think you have seen it all.

Adobe Photoshop / Photoshop CS3 Cursor Problem
February 12, 2009, 08:35:09 AM
Bear with me, this is hard to explain.

In photoshop I am getting a box around my cursor. If my cursor is over a
dark object the box is white and if my cursor is over a white object the box is dark.

When I choose a tool the cursor appears correctly at first but gradually the box appears.

I have attached a sequence of screen shots to illustrate how the cursor gradually gets a box around it.

Adobe InDesign / Ink Manager
August 13, 2008, 01:39:11 PM
Using InDesign do you:

1) Print to Postscript or Export to PDF keeping all spot colors and let your Prepress software (in my case Apogee X) convert all the spot colors to CMYK??

or

2) Use Ink Manager to convert all spots to process, then Export to PDF/Print to Postscript and drop into Prepress Software??

I currently do option #1, however I am contemplating changing to option #2.

Thanks.

Agfa Systems / AX 4.0 & Acrobat 8
June 24, 2008, 09:23:36 AM
I am running the AX 4.0 client on a 2.4 Ghz Intel iMac. Also, I am using Acrobat 8.1.2 along with Pitstop 7.1.

I just gotta say that trying to edit a PDF thru AX using Acrobat & Pitstop just plain SUCKS.

First, it takes forever the PDF to appear on the screen, then when it does trying to choose a Pitstop tool results in a 3 second delay before the tool is active. The amount of frustration I get with this setup causes me to do whatever I can to keep from editing PDF's thru AX.

Anybody else have the same problem, or is it just me???????

The Rest... / Apple - iWork - Pages
June 23, 2008, 06:53:04 AM
Anybody get a job done in Apple Pages yet.

I got a PDF today that was created from Pages. Believe it or not the PDF contains no bleeds, low resolution images and it's RGB.

Anybody know what kind of PDF creation options are available in Pages. I assume you can get a good PDF out of it or am I wrong??

Adobe InDesign / Appearance of Black
May 06, 2008, 01:41:14 PM
In preferences, under Appearance of Black, what is the default setting for Overprint of Black.

Is that box clicked to allow overprinting of black??
or
Is that box NOT CLICKED by default??

I can't remember if IDCS3 comes out-of-the-box with that box clicked or not.

March 31, 2008, 08:59:20 AM

Tried to open the job in IDCS3 and I got asked for the same plugin.

I did a search on the net and found nothing.

Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat & Intel Macs
January 09, 2008, 08:22:30 AM
I have a new iMac, with the intel chip running 10.4.10.

I have Acrobat 7, but it does not function smoothly running in rosetta on the iMac.

I am thinking about getting Acrobat 8, which would run natively on my Intel Mac. However, with the horror stories over it, I just don't know what to do.

Do I just keep Acrobat 7 or bit the bullet and upgrade to Acrobat 8?????????

Adobe Acrobat / PDF Document Size
December 19, 2007, 08:59:30 AM
In older versions of Acrobat the physical document dimensions were shown at the bottom of the window next to the pdf page numbers.

In Acrobat 7 I have to move my pointer to the bottom left hand corner of the document to get the document size to show. Once I move my pointer away, the size info disappears.

How do I keep the document size visible at all times in Acrobat 7????

Pressroom / Density Bars Only
October 17, 2007, 09:46:32 AM
Anyone else got a pressman that only wants solid squares of CMYK in the color with NO, I repeat, NO screens of CMYK or gray balance squares??   ::)

My guy just wants solid squares of CMYK repeated across the sheet, thats all.

Then when something doesn't match the proof, he says the plates are wrong!!

Surely I am not the only one in this boat.
