Title: So since I'm over here now...
Post by: The Stevinator on September 18, 2007, 02:36:21 PM
How many jobs do you guys do in a day?  I'm trying to get a gauge of how much work I output in relation to others in the field.  I'm in the process of statistically proving I'm worth more money for when I graduate this December with a BS.

The Steve Meister is back! That didn't take long.

Hmmmm... that's a pretty loose question dude. Some of us have jobs that are just a work and turn of a letter fold brochure and others have projects that are 40pg full color tabloids.

I personally get through around 10 jobs a day. This usually consists of a mix of the before mentioned variables. Some days though, I get hit with an 800 page perfect bound phone directory that will take the better part of that day. Or, I have one monthly client that hits me with a job that has over 200 different name plate changes on the black with different quantities that shares a common blue plate. Between messing with the spreadsheat, ripping and Preps assembly, it takes half the day.

Again, probably an average of 10 @ 16pg for a plate count of 80 to 150 per day.

yeah i know it's a tough question due to the variety of work.  me personally most of our work comes in the form of direct mail.  probably around 75% of what we print get's mailed.  we have a perfect binder, but it's not used for things like large phone directories and such.  so i'm dealing with variable data on our indigo (including a lot of direct smile variable image stuff).  static on our qmdi, and our other small offset presses, and they've made a bid on a 5 color perfecting 74di.  i figure i work on an average of 20 job tickets a day, sometimes multiple times.  i'm the only prepress person in the whole company. so add that, taking at least 15hrs of college for the past 4.5yrs, and i just got a dog.  and i've still managed to accumulate 7yrs of working experience in the field.  oh, and let's not forget i set up the plants entire workflow, estimating system, and calibrated all the machinery.

my life is pretty busy.

the job market tends to be slow now though.  so hopefully i can hold on to where i'm at now and find something good when i graduate.  but i want to at least be able to quantify to myself that yes, i am indeed worth more than the lowsy 37k i'm making.

damn, this is sounding like it belongs in rants/raves.....haha :o....oops sorry the "hoot & holler" section.

I've had days where I did over 50 projects and days where I've done 1. I'd say on average I do maybe 10.

10-20 on average I'd guess. It really depends  on how much time I spend out back drinking.

hahaha.  oh man.  i would be a much happier employee if i could drink while working.  then i could just laugh when people do such dumb things.

As others have said...it varies greatly. Anywhere from 1-20 but I'm usually busy all day. The nice thing about computers is you can have work running on one and still have time to check out the message boards but hey, I'm working right now...really I am.

Houston, Texas.  but i do so much more than prepress.  in addition to the stuff above i also operate the company's occupational and health safety program,......that i created...

and i guess i wouldn't feel so strongly about being underpaid if i weren't so under appreciated as well.  not to mention having incompetent people above me.

i had a card game that had a "boss coming" command - i thinik it started putting equations on the screen or summat when ya did it - quite useful!

I used to do anything from a single project that required design, photo shoots, and complete layout and proofing. I'd do it over maybe a couple of days if lucky. Then there were times I would crank 20-30 jobs including everything from business cards to preflighting a 3-panel 8.5 x 11 brochure.

These days though (since switching jobs) I run a Presstek 34DI and depending on the run length I can usually get a 5,000 sheet job run and backed up (on  12 x 18, 80# gloss text) in just under 3 hours, including imaging, drying between sides and make-ready.

Try this one: 3(5+0!)! = ?

Nope the answer is.  3 * ((5 + (0 !)) !) = 2160.
! is called a factorial where: n ! is the product 1 × 2× ... × n, and 0! is always = 1

My 15 year old daughter came home with this one and said she got it wrong because she forgot it was a calculator problem!
What happened to the days of pencil and paper? I wasn't even allowed to bring a calculator into class :o

I had to stop my 12 year old from dividing by zero last night, I told her if she did the universe would implode. She told me I needed to go to bed.

(5+0!) = 6, and since the second ! is outside the parenthesis, you do 3(6) first = 18, 18! (according to Google) is the exponential mess posted above.

I had to write a procedure in a high school Pascal class that calculated factorials.

Friday morning pop quiz:

(a+b) 2 = a 2 + 2ab + b 2

(a+b)(c+d) = ac + ad + bc + bd

a 2 - b 2 = (a+b)(a-b) (Difference of squares)

a 3  b 3 = (a  b)(a 2 ab + b 2) (Sum and Difference of Cubes)

x 2 + (a+b)x + AB = (x + a)(x + b)

if ax 2 + bx + c = 0 then x = ( -b (b 2 - 4ac) ) / 2a (Quadratic Formula)

Oh come on beemonster...you can play too.

2 + 3 = ___

BTW, in case no one knows...google is also a calculator. Type in your math problem and it will give you the answer. Give it a try:

Just to help you out beer, it's more than 4 but less than 6. Don't even think about asking me for the actual answer, and no, you can't copy :)

Talk about highjacked. I average between 10 and 20 a day, like most everybody else, sometimes one, sometimes 30+, just depends on the day. and if the boss is coming: http://www.jasperfforde.com/games/bosscoming.html
