General Prepress / HP 10000 digital press
November 16, 2013, 09:19:42 AM
Well it looks like our 29 in HP 10000 digital press will likely be installed in mid-2014. Our first implementation meeting is next week. I've read some of the on-line brochures, but still have many questions. Is anyone out there in our community using a fairly late-model HP digital press (any size)? I'm wondering about file input, where the calibration curves are applied, the press RIP etc. Judging from the brochure info, HP has partnered with Esko for the front end of the press. Can 1 bit tiffs be utilized/exported similar to our Oris proofer and our CTP device? Is screening required and if so, where are the screens applied - at the press RIP, or at pre-press as is the norm now? Keep in mind that our prepress facility is 5 miles or so away from the production facility where the press will be located, so how does that affect the process? At what point does the press operator pick up the job and what does he/she have to do ie: when is pre-press no longer required? Thanks for any info you can give me - getting those butterflies mid-section just thinking about this. :blind:

Macintosh / alternate Mac browser for OSX 10.5
September 18, 2013, 12:14:27 PM
It appears that the Mozilla-based Camino browser will not undergo any further development and the folks there are recommending that for security users migrate to a different browser. I'm not a big fan of Safari or Firefox on my old OSX 10.5 laptop at home. I've tried OmniWeb, which uses the Safari engine in conjunction with IMO a better interface, but it still has issues with certain websites. Any suggestions for other browsers that will run with my "older" OS?

We have an issue that has cropped up in the past week or so with the high humidity we have been experiencing. There are 8 DP ("dew") sensors that measure relative humidity at the laser head, and if they read too high, prevent the platesetter from recording. It appears that one of the sensors (DP1) has gone haywire as it is reading "22", whereas the other 7 sensors are reading single digits (2 - 9) - any reading above 20 causes a failure. This is preventing us from imaging any plates and probably today will start affecting production at press. Does anyone know of a way to bypass these sensors? Fuji has ordered a new sensor but it is coming from Japan. Any help is much appreciated.

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Oris question
April 15, 2013, 10:07:53 AM
We have finally completed the installation of our Oris RIP/Epson 9900 line for proofing. I've kept the old BestRIP/Epson 10600 on-line for now to help out with the proofing load, but also to do some comparisons. With the both systems we are using screened 1 bits to comprise the proofing image. On one job in particular, the carton background colour should be a straight 20% Yelo screen, which the old BestRIP emulated pretty well. The Oris system added some Magenta & Cyan dots to the mix, which to my eyes, threw the colour off. Not sure why it is adding these dots to the image. Any ideas??

General Prepress / cloning software for Windows 7
April 04, 2013, 11:07:13 AM
Our Oris ColorTuner (Windoze 7) server has been installed and now I want to clone it out to a bootable external hard drive for use as a back-up. I'll be the first to admit that I am not familiar to a Win-environment, but I was wondering if there is an easy-to-use back-up software out there equivalent to Mac's Carbon Copy Cloner. New server came with an SSD - the first in our shop. It seems to be fast, but I'm nervous about durability, hence my interest in having a backup. Thanks in advance!

Esko / Nexus 10.1.2 is now available
March 20, 2013, 08:43:19 AM
Nexus users FYI: Looks like Esko has updated Nexus from 10.1.1 to 10.1.2. Judging by the Change log, they have enacted a lot of fixes to Nexus RIP, Nexus Processor, Nexus PDF Processor and Nexus Framework/Nexus Manager. I'm usually hesitant to jump on a dot upgrade, but we are going ahead with this one.  :blind:

Not much I can do about this but wait for the Fuji tech, but I am curious to see if anyone else has run into this issue. Our T9000 has about 160,000 plates thru it and yesterday stopped showing an "E41ba: Time-out error has occurred when Punch B is activated." The Fuji tech arrived, took the affected punch apart as it was jammed, cleaned and lubed it and re-installed it - everything seemed to be running ok. We got a mere 3 jobs out today when we ran into the same error. Fuji is now ordering a new punch but it looks like I'm going to be down for at least one day, maybe two. BTW, turning off the custom punches and hook punches did not help today. Anyone else experienced this?

Adobe Illustrator / CS6 Illy issue
February 11, 2013, 10:02:25 AM
Good Morning compadres,

I received an email from a friend out west who is having the following issue with Illy CS6. I haven't experienced this issue so far, so I can't really help. I'm also not sure if all of the updates have been done to their software.

"Just wondering if one of you has the fix to this problem in Illustrator CS6. Sometimes when I close my file it automatically saves without asking me if I want to and also when I print, the print dialog box flashes for a millisecond and then my file prints automatically before I'm able to choose and select print settings."

Not sure where to direct her - preferences maybe?

Adobe Illustrator / can't see low res links in Illy CS6
January 30, 2013, 07:32:51 AM
We're just starting to experiment with Illy CS6 and have run into a bit of a roadblock. We normally impose low res files on an Illy template that are linked to high-res Nexus-generated OPPO files. Up to CS5, we can "see" these low-res (LR) files by checking the "Use Low Resolution Proxy for linked eps" under the file handling preference in Illy. I've done that in CS6 but can't see the low res preview like we could in CS5 and previous versions. I've attached a screenshot of the pref pane (left), CS5 preview (middle) and CS6 preview (right). Any ideas on how to solve the preview issue would be greatly appreciated.

WOPD plugin for Illy CS6 is not a freebee now as it is $5 (US presumably) for each machine. It's saved my ass on many occasions so I guess we'll be buying it. The CS345 freebee plugin does not work with CS6, so the new plug-in has to be purchased. Each plugin has a unique license so you can't use a duplicate plugin on another machine that is on the same network. The link to it is:

Nothing is f&*king free anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :banghead:

I seem to recall not so long ago reading a thread about problems encountered when using the new LAB-based Pantone libraries in CS6, especially when converting spots to process. A lot of our client files involve changing the design from spot colours to process before going to production, and as such it presents a problem when using the LAB-based Pantone Plus libraries that are the default in CS6. When converting the LAB-based spots to CMYK, it presents different process values than the old libraries found in CS2 - CS5. There is a work-around that allows you to replace the Pantone Plus libraries in Illustrator and In Design with the traditional CMYK-based Pantone libraries, like those found in CS2 - CS5. By going to this link and following the instructions, you should be able to use the traditional libraries in CS6:

Hope this helps!

Macintosh / lost all my printer drivers!
December 04, 2012, 03:59:12 PM
To keep this brief, I've lost all my printer drivers. Is there a quick transfer I can do from my last back-up that will restore them? If so, where do I look - running SL 10.6.4? Thanks for any help.

Macintosh / circa 2009 Macbook Pro screen has blue tint
November 14, 2012, 10:39:55 AM
I've tried fixing this with the normal google tips ie: System Prefs>Display, but that didn't work. The screen seems to be taking on a bluish tint - computer still works fine, but the tint is not going away. Any other ideas? Hoping the logic board isn't on it's way out.

A few colleagues have told me that they leave their Epson plotters on 24/7, but some (like us) turn them off at night and for the weekend. I'm just checking with everyone here. The plotter went out of whack by a delta E 6.0 this week - the biggest turn I've seen since we bought it, and now I'm wondering if turning it off and on isn't such a good idea.

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Oris Color-tuner vs EFI Fiery
September 17, 2012, 10:53:07 AM
We are FINALLY looking to replace our ancient EFI Bestcolor Screenproof system with a new proofing solution. Presently we are looking either an Oris Color-Tuner front end attached to an Epson 9900, or an EFI Fiery XF attached to a 9900. Any opinions on what's best? The EFI option is way cheaper ($18K CDN vs $31K CDN) and is probably a closer interface to what we are using now, but I'm not sure if we can exchange profiles with some of our custies that are using the Oris option.

Windows / Restoring outlook emails from a backup
September 05, 2012, 05:22:45 PM
To start with I know little about any Windows OS, but I have a friend in need so I thought I'd ask. My buddy just got laid off and his Windows 7 laptop was taken back by the company. He does have a backup that he did, and wants to somehow retrieve his email messages from Outlook. Is there a folder like on a Mac Mail program that contains all of the messages? If it can be restored to another Win7 box, can a script be exported so he could import the messages to his iMac at home, which also runs Outlook? Thanks in advance for any assistance. This guy can use a break.
