Wow, Joe!

I thought this was out there, but my searches weren't using the right verbiage.  I'm not sure there's enough time for me to get up to speed on this, so I'll check out some of these sites and look for local guy also.

As I'm dealing with a broker, I doubt he's interested in an expensive initial investment for one client.  Actually, he could probably use Amazing Print (if I understand their offerings correctly) and bypass me entirely.  His printers use PDF workflows.

Wow again... maybe I should apply at ADT for that customer service job.  I'll probably need to dye my gray hair....  anybody know a good wrinkle remover?

I'm "left behind" typesetter with knowledge of the print side; I utilize Q__rk, CS3 on a daily basis.  I operate a small and shrinking business out of my home, serving brokers and small printers with prepress clean-up and various typesetting.  Not a designer.  NO web development experience, little knowledge.

A broker customer has been requested by a current client to bid on creating a website (and providing printing) where their agents can go to order stationary and sales aids, providing personalized information for the print items.  The agents number about 1,000 nationwide.

The business wants this to function without their day-to-day involvement.

The broker has less knowledge of the web than I do.

Our goal is to add a link to the business's website to a separate website where the agents would make their selections of print items and input their specific variable information.  The order would be emailed to me, artwork created and sent out for proof approval.  Upon approval, I send the artwork to the printer.  I need to consider the billing at some point... right now I'm not sure who will actually pay... I believe the company.

My question here is the website.  I've looked at a couple of the web hosting sites which provide the capability to create the website online.  But is this too simplistic... though cheap. Should I look for a local website developer to do this?  Any recommendations in the Kansas City area?

Any input would be appreciated... I know I need some facts... but I really don't know what's out there now.

I visited Vista Print's site and thought "how can we compete with this"... but this particular broker has a knack for surprising me with his closing ability!

Thanks, Chuck

Items for Sale / Re: MKL Prepress Buys equipment
May 05, 2009, 03:53:14 PM
Too late!  I picked up an Accuset 1000 w/ PS2 RIP for free on Craigslist.  Took it home, set it up in the garage, checked out ok (couldn't fully test registration, no processor).  I emailed 5 dealers for offers and sold it April 25 for $1000! Spent about $100 on moving it and packing the G3 mac that went with it.

General Prepress / Disassemby of Panther imagesetter
January 15, 2008, 10:09:54 AM
We're going to scrap our Panther Plus imagesetter (no surprise there, huh?).  A friend is into e-scrap processing, so we're going to tear it down.

Any problems with capacitator or laser having a electrical charge?  It's been unplugged for a week.

Thanks!

As a 2-color piece with grayscale photos, I believe the colors will be intact.  Not sure I'd even consider it with a process color job.

I have a client that wants to use a fillable PDF (created from a press-ready PDF) to distribute to 10 locations, have those locations complete the changes (in lieu of typesetting) in the fillable PDF, save the PDF (probably using Acrobat Reader) and using the results as press-ready PDFs (or at least the basis of a press-ready PDF).  Changes would be made quarterly.

The original PDF is created in Indesign.  The document is tabloid, 2 colors, 2 sides, in individual 8.5x11 pages.

This arises as a solution to the many revisions (and much cost) that the locations made in the most recent version ($5,000 of typesetting, mostly alterations).  One location went through over a dozen proof cycles!

My role would be to create the fillable PDFs and possibly bring the resulting PDFs to a press-ready status.

I have created fillable PDFs from my own original layout program files using Acrobat 6 and 8.  These were intended for completion online for web use or local output only, not presses.

Would this scheme work?  Has anyone ever used a fillable PDF in lieu of typesetting?  I assume the operators at the locations would be your standard office folks as opposed to graphic arts software knowledgable (excuse the poor choice of words).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Windows / Re: Selling old PC's

Where to sell?  Craigslist.org!  You're in the Dallas area if I remember right...  Good place to try before eBay...no fees, usually local so no shipping hassles... and can get national attention thru google search (sold a 55 chevy pickup with camper and received an inquiry from Pointyhat's area--New England! sold it locally for asking price).... Just remember price moderately high and negotiate down!

Pulled up a job from 1994 a couple of months ago.  Design had changed but the 4-500 auto parts names hadn't so it was pretty handy.

Copied up files from flopticals and syquest, to ZIPS, to CDs.  Still can open a Quark 3.3 file on the old G3.  'Course only did that twice in 2007, but I've got the space so.... why not!

Freelance / Re: New to Freelance

Thanks, Ninja...  That PPF thread and the link are print-oriented.  I'm interested in design/production freelance.

I'm rather skeptical of the general situation, tho.

Has anyone ever tried the internet freelance sites?  For a membership fee (monthly) you can bid on jobs submitted through the website.

One I looked at was www.contractedwork.com

In the late 70s, I ran Editwriter 7500 & 7700s using very similar techniques.  Except those devices had TWO filmstrips available at a time!  (still have one filmstrip and some training manuals)

OBTW, I'm still a typesetter at heart and practice!

What was your top speed?

With a keyboard or Xacto?....  snick!  -- Damn cut myself again!

Don't remember ever timing myself.... just got the work done!

I remember my wife was in 80wpm range when she test for a job in 80s.  Never as fast as her!
