Quote from: Farabomb on August 02, 2013, 07:44:30 AMAnd you wonder why I have PC's. At least I can fix them my damn self.

I'm about ready to just use this HP xw8600 on my desk for everything. It doesn't get 10 kernel panics a day.
You say that up until windows gets all uppity and starts pulling it's own version of dumb shit.

Absolutely.  File handling and integrity on Windows leaves a lot to be desired.

Where I used to work we had a workflow based on a PC.  It was great when it worked.  We used post-RIP files for proofs so jobs would be stored on there.  I had a 48pp A5 booklet stored as an 8up impo.  Proof was approved so next day I ran it to the platemaker.  It had swapped pages 12 and 24.  Even the page previews on the RIP looked OK.  This kept happening.

I'd rather work on  a Mac any day.

I doubt it was the OS that did that. I've seen dumb shit on win 3.11wg, 95, 95se, 98, ME, NT, 2000, linux, unix, OSX, OS9, you name it. I'd blame it more on the coding of the app than the OS.

In the end they all suck.

anything doing any heavy lifting is windows based here. There's some problem with our network that the macs are particularly sensitive to. Accessing files on the lan results in frequent kernel panics on most of the macs. It's not a mac problem, but the solution is to not use them because whatever it is, the pcs don't just up and die from it.

We have some retarded setup here, using AdmitMac, Active Directory, and some convoluted crap going on in the server room.

I told the owner that we should deal with it, because we're having a hard time getting our work done. His response, I shit you not, was :

"You wouldn't have any work if we couldn't take the jobs in and write them up, and we do that on windows"

Honestly, I like my Mac pro as a workstation. Does what it should most of the time. I would not have Mac servers though.

Sounds like your IT department is the issue, not the owner.

what IT department? He quit, they didn't replace him. Our shop bitch got sick with ALS, they didn't replace him. Our web storefront person quit, they didn't replace her. They fired the bindery manager, didn't replace him.

See a trend here?

Now I really see why you want the fuck out.

Why have people that know what they are doing when you can have one person doing 5 jobs badly?

Well, it goes back further than that even. That's why one of the sons has these job titles:
Production Manager
Purchasing
Pressroom Manager

Basically I run the 3 digital presses, program jobs for digital, make plates, preflight, fix/repair files, RIP jobs, plan/strip jobs, answer phones, greet walk-ins, clean the processor/processor maintenance, server/IT/network maintenance, website maintenance, website new product code writing, ftp maintenance, run the wide-format, assemble and proof jobs, and when time allows, help with bindery and deliveries. The only things I don't do are run the press, run the windmill, and pricing/quoting. How many jobs is that? I mean, it's one, for me, with a shitload of expected duties.

Yeah, and DAMN that prepress job working for a large corporation where you go in, do one job, and go home at the end of the day without having to answer phone calls and emails about everything under the sun. Not have to fight for vacation time and have to clean up the ensuing fustercluck when you return.
