Kodak Systems / Dot gain curve in Prinergy
November 02, 2012, 05:16:50 PM
Hi everyone  :hello:
Hope it's not a total shock to see me back but prepress/printing seems to be like a black hole that will suck you back in at some point.... Hope everyone is ok - especially those on the east coast. Am trying to help out a friend and I figured the best place to go is here - it seems that someone here always had a solution to a problem. The question is this: is there a way to apply a dot gain curve to some but not all areas on a sheet in Prinergy? I don't recall running across this before I got out of the business last year so I couldn't come up with anything on my own. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

The Rest... / Images to find
June 04, 2010, 01:59:35 PM
Ugh. Working on a banner by default. Camping should be illegal so that co-workers are not allowed to leave.

So - I need to find an "antiquey" looking old man winter cloud type image (think: cloud w/a face) who looks like he's blowing the north wind. "A wizard looking type". Yeah. OK.

This guy has changed the "theme" of this banner w/every proof sent to him. The artwork must be approved Mon morning if he wants his banner on Wed. Idiot.

Oh - and a half melted snowman too... Sheesh....

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll buy the beer.

I need another vacation.... Now...

General Prepress / File transfer issue
January 08, 2010, 10:22:19 AM
A while back we got a new server. When the files were transferred over, some of them seem to have become corrupt and read as "unix executable files". Some are able to be "saved" by adding an extension but some are not. My supervisor is asking if anyone knows of a way to fix this... Many thanks in advance. Beers/beverage of your choice at the B4 get together when we get around to it.

Kodak Systems / Duotones in Prinergy
December 03, 2009, 11:19:08 AM
OK - here's one for you other Prinergy people. I have a book in which all the photos are duotones. The book was set up ages ago in Quack. (Yes - just kill me now.) Anyhoo... When we still had Brisque - we could change the screen angles for the dots so they didn't over print each other. For some reason we can't figure out how or where to change this in Prinergy. Anyone know where we can do that? Or can we do it in Quark and Prinergy will let it retain the screen angles? Brisque wouldn't. It over rode the screen angles... Thanks in advance...

Adobe InDesign / Interactive online proofing
September 23, 2009, 12:49:55 PM
Hey guys - and girls:
We're trying to set up an online proofing system and we have to build a template for business cards, letterhead and envelopes.
The customer has to be able to type in text fields their name, title, address, phone, fax, email and website.
The business card has to maintain customer specifications such as font, logo and any disclaimers that may be required.
Any ideas how to do this? What's the best program to do this in? InDesign or something else?

PS - I'm asking this for my co-worker.

The Rest... / Not sure what I'm looking for...
May 13, 2009, 06:39:43 PM
OK - here's one for you: this is for my embroidery girl. Apparently not ALL of the people in our graphics/prepress dept. are smart enough to set up embroidery logos to the size required, and my embroidery girl only has an app on her PC that lets her preview the logo sent to her, but does not allow her to see what the actual size of the logo IS.

So... she wants to know if there is something out there - FREE - that she can install that will allow her to see the size of what is sent to her. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Hey - anyone got a version of "Cambria" that'll work on my Mac? I need to recreate a forking logo and this is what they used. Thanks in advance.

Fonts / Looking for a font
January 28, 2009, 05:28:19 AM
So... I have these customers - that I like (seriously, I like them) - and I'm designing a business card for the husband's business (already did the wife's) and he LOVES this font, but he doesn't like the fact that the "A" is lower case. And they want to know: can I find a font LIKE THIS that has an "A" that is upper case. I spent I don't know how much time yesterday searching and my brain is about to do this:

Anybody got any ideas? This is the font, by the way... Spring LP...

IF you have/find anything (that I don't have to buy... hee...), you can either post a link here or PM me and I'll send you my work email addy.

Adobe Acrobat / Passworded PDF

I swear I saw this here somewhere, but for the life of me can't remember: anyone know how to open a PDF that has a password on it?

The Rest... / Freehand ?
January 15, 2009, 11:21:08 AM
I know I asked this somewhere before but for the life of me can't find it right now. So... Awhile back I was having FH issues and had to reinstall. My fonts then chose NOT to print unless changed to paths. After a couple weeks or so, they magically started to work. Yesterday, I got my pretty, shiny new iMac and copied everything over to it, and guess what???? Again, the freaking fonts won't print! Any ideas? Do I try to reinstall? Or do I just float along and see if FH starts to cooperate in a couple weeks again....

The Rest... / Freehand File issue
December 10, 2008, 11:05:55 AM
*sigh* OK - not only am I in Catalog Hell, but the catalogs are all created in Freehand. In spreads. We have to get the marketing girl to switch them to InDesign. So far, we haven't been able to tackle her before she starts the new season...

Anyhoo... Here's my dilemma: I create my page, save it, go on my merry way. Well, when I go back to open the page and make changes, FH tells me it can't open the file - not a VALID FH file. So, I wind up redoing the page. GRRR... I am wasting so much time. Why do I feel another migraine coming on???? Now, I can open the original pages SHE laid out to create MY pages from. I can open my pages from LAST year to grab graphics etc. Ugh. I am ready to run screaming down the highway.

The Rest... / Freehand EPS question
November 26, 2008, 08:37:13 AM
I had a request for a logo that was (of COURSE!) made many years ago created by someone who either loves Freehand or didn't have access to Illy. They wanted it as an EPS so I sent them an EPS. Now I get an email from them telling me they are opening it in Illy and it has little white lines through it. (Yes - I know. I opened it in Illy once for the hell of it and noticed the same thing.) So my question is this: do I just tell her she's out of luck? Or is there a way to fix this problem? I also think they are working on a PC - so I sent them a generic EPS...
