well back in the good old days, freehand was bliss... especially compared to quark and pagemaker... it actually did the stuff you wanted without needing a 500 page manual. But then again i started in the days of scalpels, film and darkrooms, so anything on a computer was a massive saving in time.
I did prefer pagemaker to quark for page layout, so Indesign was a quick convert for me.... but Freehand is where the good stuff started.

No youngin, 20 years on the computer, about 30 years all in total in graphics, printing. I remember mixing up developer for film trays every morning, waxing pmts to artboards, setting type on a varityper, making traps with mylar on the contact frame, etc. etc. Nope, no youngin here.

Lordy, PMTs! I started with a Compugraphic with no memory. For lined forms I had to scribe the vertical lines on the negs. Anyone remember film cutters or scribers?

Oh, and I still have a burnisher in my office.

That processor was awesome! Ours wasn't plumbed to fresh water so if you let it go a little too long it made Orange Julius®

I think the only reason I liked Illy better than FH was because of all the times they forgot to give us the .eps'... so no good for output.
Or they would forget the master so no editing...

I was very happy when FH4 (or was it 5?) came out and it was just 1 file instead of multiples.
I do not miss fixing all the tiff boxes in Quack to be white.
I do miss making the cat burp on the Pshop 2.5(?) splash screen

or the alien zapping the quark file

Well we had the "plumbed" option, and even had a little crane overhead to assist in lifting the racks for cleaning, but overall, the experience was troubling at best.

Oh yes those scribers, now I grieve when a mark is out a hair on a 4000 percent magnification in indd or ai, then i remember the old scriber method and relax a bit.

Like when we ask the custy to make a new PDF but embed the fonts this time, they ask, "why can't you embed the fonts?"

None of my customers are smart enough to say that and arrogant enough to not ask for help. There I am, 3 weeks later waiting for a file that will have the same problems.

lol, yeap the good old days of dermititus from the bromide developer, I remember it well.
I did enjoy being a camera operator though... and many of the quiet times when the boss would walk in to find all the camera op's playing cards in the dark room, shake his head and walk out, hehe.
or nearly falling asleep as I was touching up the negs on a light table with that brown opaque paint.
or stirring the molten lead in a pot to make new stamping blocks

actually I think I prefer computers now!
cos I get to communicate and reminise all over the world with all you lovely people!
31 years for me since the apprenticeship days

over 40 years here...  more headaches than I can count...
I started out as camera operator as well, tray developing film.
