Some blog post drew my attention to QR codes - those 2D barcodes that allow you to add a web link on a printed page. I searched around a little and created a QR code information page (http://www.prepressure.com/library/technology/qr-code) on Prepressure.com. Apart from noticing these codes a few times in magazines, I have no experience with them.
Can anyone recommend software to create these kinds of barcodes?
I am also curious about using color in these or other barcodes: are there any guidelines for this?
Wow, very interesting. Watch the vid here http://www.copress.org/2009/02/03/bridging-the-print-digital-divide-with-qr-codes/ (http://www.copress.org/2009/02/03/bridging-the-print-digital-divide-with-qr-codes/)
Too bad my cell phone is only a cell phone.
did a little research on these myself (mind you, a VERY little)
There are a lot of web sites that will let you (for free) generate these codes and save/download the file
If you want to buy the software, it ranges from under 100 bucks US to several hundreds of dollars.
Not all scanners are equal (some read them better than others, depends on the size of the code itself)
You can add images and colors to some
and, from my limited research, there's not a lot of info regarding content, only a lot of sales pitches.
I think the companies are holding back in order to get you to purchase their codes/software and the support that ultimately you will need.
Ok,
We're looking into buying software to generate the 2D codes. These are 2d codes, QR, Data matrix, etc.
Anyone have anything or know of software out there that is a local install. Meaning it is NOT a Web generated code, but software that you own and operate yourself. Not a yearly subscription. Installed on a Mac or a PC.
I am aware of xmPie and Fusion Pro having the capability of making the codes, but I want something that is not linked to mailing software or variable data software.
thanks In advance,
David
We use ArtPro to generate the Data Matrix codes. We don't have a scanner to verify, however. After the job is printed, we send them out for verification. Kind of like locking the barn after the horse gets away. We've never had one that did not scan or scanned bad.
The QR bar codes are so far only being used by 1 customer. They are supplied on the art - we do not build. The only verification we do is have someone scan it with their phone - if it goes to the proper web site, we call it good.
We have Bar Code Producer, and it does not build either.

if you just need to generate one at a time I use Bytescout Bar Code Generator, it's freeware for PC. Does not seem to do batch though.
I haven't checked out prices but here: http://www.tec-it.com/en/order/Default.aspx (http://www.tec-it.com/en/order/Default.aspx)
I think were going to be seeing a lot more of the QR codes.
There is an article about it in the April - Printing Impressions Mag.
David let us know what software you get, sounds reasonable.
Just sorting thru some old E-Mail...Bar Code Producer 6.5 does make QR codes.
Figures... we just bought 6.2 about 4 months ago.

The upgrade is $60.00.

He's a link to another type of barcode we've been printing the last few months. Only one customer, but it's a big company, and the sell a LOT to Walmart.
beck
They are popping up in a lot of print material recently. Several months ago they were all over a copy of Golf Digest, and a few other mainstream mags. They were all over the recent SXSW in Austin (posters, labels, tickets, etc).
We did some our self (they were supplied) for a Superbowl gathering here in town. When scanned, it would take you to your own personal web page for some product, what, I can't recall.
Most of the QR codes are generated online or downloaded as a SDK for a web interface.
I've played with Microsoft Tag, Qyoo, Mobi Tags, etc. Our Esko software (Suite 7) does the Data Matrix like beck has in Artpro.
They all do about the same thing, some more than others as far as the multiple "call to action" requests go.
I'm not sure what type of code we are looking to go with, the request was made to either get an upgrade to our existing barcode software or find a new source.
So, I'm off to the hunt, so to speak.
Use Bar code producer....It creates a wide range of Bar Codes including the QR...
thanks, I'll check it out.
desighned and printed an envelope with a qr code on about a year or so ago - no feed back as to whether it was a success but the code worked fine. i just did an online one - which is of no use so i'll fcuk the shut up
I'm getting a lot of the QR codes on stuff we print. Most are 4 color black and fuzzy as hell but I'm sure that is desinger magic. Don't know if they work OK or not.

I still say check out ID Automation's software (http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/qr-code/), top notch & great support as well. One of the biggest parts of dealing with QR is testing. Get as many devices (iPhone old & new, Android models and even Blackberry) and all of the most popular scanning apps for each also. Don't assume that if a code works on somebody's iPhone 4 that it will function with older models that don't have auto-focus or are just plain crappy hardware. Blackberry is the worst, go figure.
Yeah, that's what I've been hearing as well. Some of the older 3G phones that have the fixed focus cams that don't work too well with some of the more intricate 2D codes or the 1D codes.
I'll add ID Automation to my list of ones to check out.
I think we're going to get Fusion Pro in the next week or so, getting into W2P.

Heh. I became the barcode king in these parts back in 1995! Still haven't gotten my free cup of coffee yet. We've been seeing QRs in pdfs lately, tend to be rgb or already-converted rgb (that good ol' 4C tint mismash.) Hadn't thought of shooting one with a smartphone to test! We just print 'em and move to the next job in the rack.

yeah, but it only puts the contact info on your smart phone. If that's all you use, that's great. But what about the email on your computer? Send it to yourself in an email?

From what I understand the Scotch isn't far away from the Naga...if that's the case it would be awesome with said fruit. Sweet hot is where it's at.
I have heard it's revoltingly hot, but I've been buying these Jamaican Bonnet hot sauces that have that "sweet" flavor and are not ass-ripping hot. I have one Scotch Bonnet plant growing now, I fucking hope it makes it.

How about cobbler? It's like the pie that isn't a pie.

and yes, I like cobbler, too.
I prefer cobbler over pie, that way you can choose, just filling, just bread or both.
Not as classy as scones with tea.

Kinda hard to forget, it's all around us and it's not even 2505 yet!
I had a "Fuddruckers" experience a couple weekends ago at the flea market where someone had set up carnival mirrors & a maze for kids to play in and the stereo was blasting some chick singing in a baby voice about "Sexsexsexsex, I like chains, I like whips". Kids were running all over the place and all the parents were just standing around eating oversized hot dogs and burritos.
I watched some cracker sing a gansta rap song at karaoke and 2 85+ old ladies were dancing to it. This was down in the wonderful pinelands of jersey.

I went to a seminar where QR codes were also on the agenda. I must admit that some of examples shown that went beyond the simple 'click here to go to a web site' were pretty interesting. Scan the code on a poster to add the concert to your agenda - kinda neat! The presenter didn't show any tombstone codes (http://www.prepressure.com/library/technology/qr-code/design) - I guess those are old hat by now.
Yeah, I've done a few that will create an Event in the device's Calendar upon scanning. Good for seminars or things you want people to sign up for & remember. I've been working on QR code marketing materials for us.
I also get to learn to to track them. And started a Google+ page for our business.

What are you leaning towards for tracking & analytics? I know using the Goo.gl shortening to generate them offers a small amount of traffic data but to get really fine-grained feedback you almost have to go with a 3rd party service, of which there are far too many. it's kind of interesting stuff once you get into it, assuming the marketing is handled well & there's some actual benefits to be had.

86 XMPie and get Printables (Storefront, FusionPrp and Expressions). With Printables storefront, it generates unique PIRLs and tracks them. Takes you out of the equation. Plus, FP bought DirectSmile a while back and also creates VDP raster images.
[edit]oh yeah - the new version of FP also generates unique QR codes
FusionPro is also NOT compatible with Lion yet. Which I discovered after I installed, re-registered & had live jobs ready to process. :death:

OK, reviving the DEAD! (thread)
If you guys were a start up business (first sale last week) and you needed a QR code supplier, who would you go with, or would you start by generating them yourself?
Apologies in advance for NOT going back through all 16 pages of this thread, but today is my day "off", crammed in between the 5x12hr shifts I just finished feeding the press, and the next 4x12hr shifts I'm about to start! The only day that doesn't SUCK in this deal ... payday!
You can make your own with google.
http://createqrcode.appspot.com (http://createqrcode.appspot.com)
I make it at the largest size. Open in Photoshop. Convert to gray. Change to bitmap at 2400 dpi. Save as EPS and you have a high res vector one color QR code.
(Oops...that's not google but it works.)
There's a lot of free QR Code generators online. We use http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ (http://qrcode.kaywa.com/) which gives you a .png to save and also a piece of html code to paste into your blog etc.

That's the same one I use. I open the .png in Photoshop, convert to a 1200 dpi bitmap .tif and resave.

If you guys were a start up business (first sale last week) and you needed a QR code supplier, who would you go with, or would you start by generating them yourself?
The online generators are really only good for single or very small quantities of codes, and there isn't any (easy) way to track usage. You can do simple analytics by tying it to a Google, which is kind of cool but it's a lot of work if you get into any volume of codes.
I personally like Kerem Erkan's generator (http://keremerkan.net/qr-code-and-2d-code-generator/), it makes nice vector formatted files and has a lot of other options.
If you want to hosted tracking & heavy analytics and all that crap I'll dig up some of my other resources, just say the word!

Yeah, don't think this is possible. The Facebook check-in appears to be tied to their API, so there's not really a URL that can be extracted. Pisser.
Edit to add:
Okay, maybe it is possible but I think you have to go through a service that generates the QR based on the FB API. Scan this code and it should take you directly to that company's FB Check-In page:;
