Macintosh / Networking issue
December 02, 2022, 11:50:27 AM
I haven't put a Mac on a network for several years now, and I don't remember it being difficult to map to a server, but I'm having an issue with one of the iMacs at the place I'm working at now. It's running 10.14.6 Mojave. No internet connectivity all of a sudden. Wireless showed a connection and ethernet showed a connection to the network. However, no internet. Tried copying a link to the NAS from one of the other iMacs but no luck - like I was Ethernet connected (green light on the Network system preference) but not on the network. Couldn't access the internet via wireless which was also a green light. Replaced DNS addresses with 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 to no avail. Finally pulled the Ethernet cable and was able to access internet via wireless. Doesn't really help with the network connection though as i need to be able to contact the NAS for files. Any ideas?

Apparently my Pantone swatch libraries in CC2018 are missing some colours (2177). How do I swap in a new swatch library file and where can I get one? Its odd in that the Pantone book I looked at dated from 2017, yet the swatch library in CC2018 is missing colours from the older book.

It's been almost 3 years since I was laid off from the folding carton packaging company that I worked for. Since then I've been kinda semi-retired, doing part-time gigs for Canada Post and being a municipal cop in the summer seasons in our resort community. The other day I received a call from a former colleague of mine at the packaging company and it turns out that he and his son have started a sign company, which is doing really well. They were looking for a digital tech and thought of me, so it looks like I'm back into the graphics world again, at least for a couple of years. Same front end but totally different outputs - mostly vinyl signs, vehicle wraps, etc. - sounds very Skryber-esque, so I may be back up asking for advice!!

Usually as soon as I fire up Malwarebytes it updates the signature file, but today showed me the "Malwarebytes XPC Service quit unexpectedly" warning and the app hangs. OS X 10.8.5. First time it has done that. I deleted preferences, even re-installed but to no avail. I'm wondering if it's a problem at Malwarebytes or something insidious inside my computer at work. Any ideas?

Esko / new press - CIP3 files?
April 19, 2018, 06:48:02 AM
It looks like the company is finally going to replace our old (circa 2000) Heidy CD102 with either a new Heidelberg CD106 or a new ManRoland. During the press demos, our press supervisor said he could see an image of the fully imposed layout on the press monitor screen. I'm not sure what was sent to the press to allow it to make up that image. Would it be the information derived from a CIP3 file, or would it be something else? All we provided Heidy/MR for the demo were imposed pdfs, and they put them thru their own RIP for plating.

Esko / Nexus Mac OS specs updated
March 28, 2018, 12:25:21 PM
I was just doing some reading on the latest specs (as per Nov 2017) for the now-obsolete Nexus workflow, and lo-and-behold, lookee here:

Nexus on Mac
Operating system: Mac OS X Server or client: 10.6x, 10.7x, 10.8x, Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks, Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan, macOS 10.12 Sierra (macOS 10.12 High Sierra is not supported).

Nexus Manager
Operating system: Mac OS X 10.6x, 10.7x, 10.8x, Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks, Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan, macOS 10.12 Sierra (macOS 10.12 High Sierra is not supported).

Looks like we can upgrade our OS and still run, and be able to upgrade our Adobe apps beyond CC2014 now.

Joe: any issues that you know of upgrading from 10.8.5 to 10.12 Sierra, besides the fact that folder labelling is gone?

The latest in antique technology! HP server loaded with Windows 2000 Server and EFI BestColor proofing software. Comes with BestColor USB dongle. Also, will throw in an Epson Stylus Pro 10600 that is mated to server. Hasn't been used in 5 years. Will trade for a case of either Yuengling (USA) or Mill Street Organic Lager (Canada). Bring a leash and take this puppy home!

General Prepress / Extended gamut (7 colour) printing
January 25, 2018, 11:16:14 AM
Just wondering if anyone out there is using extended gamut printing (7 colour process), esp. with regard to Esko's Equinox format? The issue of extended gamut printing raises it's ugly head every 5 or 6 years here and I just wanted to get feedback from anyone using it in a sheetfed environment.

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Oris ColorTuner/WEb questions
September 06, 2017, 01:21:03 PM
Anyone out there using Oris ColorTuner/Web v2.x and has a really good grasp on set-up and calibration? I have a few questions about setting up targets and adjusting swatches that our installer hasn't really had time to answer.

This is a question for you Prinergy users out there. We use Nexus at our facility and our sister company uses Prinergy. Right now they are outputting from Prinergy directly to a drop folder on a Fuji XMF Gateway server for plating purposes. They (sister company prepress) don't know that they are generating 1 bit tiffs right now - the Fuji tech did confirm to me though. If they wanted to send us some work I'd like to use their 1 bits and plate here, instead of them sending imaged plates 250 km to our plant, risking dings and scratches. How does one create a new workflow (?) in Prinergy to redirect the 1 bits to an alternate location i.e.: re-direct the 1 bits to a new destination folder, not the drop folder on the Gateway server - only for jobs that they are sending here. That way the 1 bits could be transferred from their location to our location via our common cloud-based ftp server and we could image the plates here.

So the company went out and bought our plant a new Guardian OLP electronic proofing system for about CAD $50,000. The idea was that our QC dept would take client supplied pdf file originals and use them to compare to our fully imposed Epson press proofs to ensure content was identical in all positions and eliminate human error. Well, it turns out that QC/OLP can't read the client supplied files properly, so QC suggested that the CSRs continue to proof read one position only (human error is still part of the equation), and then QC would use a prepress prep'd pdf to ensure the imposition was correct. Now QC is telling us that OLP can't find the die line on certain jobs so they can't proof the imposition data. Good investment, my ass.....

CTP - CTF / tiff catcher server
April 06, 2017, 08:21:39 AM
Right now we are exporting screened 1 bit tiffs from Nexus to a Fuji Gateway tiff catcher at the front end of our platesetter, as are a lot of folks out there in pp-land. The tiff catcher queues up the tiffs and we release them....easy-peasy. Our sister company in the GTA is using Prinergy and when asked, are not using 1 bit tiffs, so we can't use them to back us up for plating. What format does Prinergy use to send the files to the server at the platesetter? Can a server be set up to accept more than 1 file format i.e.: if the server has been set up as a tiff catcher can it also be set up to accept files from Prinergy? Just curious as the question has surfaced...

Fujifilm XMF / PackZ & XMF
March 11, 2017, 10:36:11 AM
Is anyone out in B4 land using PackZ & XMF in a folding carton environment? Looking for some real-world feedback on ease of use etc. We are looking at possibly upgrading from Esko's Nexus to either Esko AE or Fuji's PackZ/XMF set-up.

Seems to be a problem that is occurring with our Dotscreen module queues only (proofs made from 1 bit tiffs). Proofs will either error out before printing/reading the calibration swatches or not print at all. Contone proofs from PDF do not seem to be affected. CGS seems to think it may be an issue with the Built in spectro on the Epson 9900, but with the spectro working no problem on contone proofs, I'm  thinking it's a software issue issue. Anyone else experience a similar issue with an Oris ColorTuner/Web setup?

Macintosh / This 10.5.5 Mac server is killing me
February 24, 2017, 10:53:16 AM
Still having the spinning beach ball of death occasionally as soon as I start typing in our username at the log-in window at I'm just about at wit's end. Server runs ok for a couple of weeks and then the SBBOD shows up at log-in. The issues started when we replaced the Apple RAID HDDs back in March 2016. I noticed also that there is two preference p.list files in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration - one is "preferences.plist.old" which looks like the server is using at startup and the other is just preferences.plist, which hasn't been used since Oct. 2016. I also get a shitload of "ACL found but not expected..." when I do a permissions repair, either using Onyx or Disk Ultility. I've attached 3 screenshots of the plist files in the Preferences folder. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing the SBBOD at log-in as soon as one starts typing?

Things are a little different this year as the company has decided to shut down during the week in between Christmas and New Years. We haven't done that for probably 20 years. FYI - I contacted Fuji to ask about the layup of our FLHZ-125 plate processor and was told to empty and rinse the gum tray and water rinse tanks. Also empty & clean the developer tank and re-fill with distilled or RO water for the 9 day break and then drain & re-fill with fresh developer on start-up after the break. I also asked about our Epson 9900 plotter, but haven't got an answer back yet. Normally we don't turn it off at all, but we've never been off for 9 days straight since we bought it either. Will post their reply when I get one. Have a good weekend - I'm outta here!

General Prepress / possible router settings issue
October 12, 2016, 09:37:24 AM
The guys/gals in our IT dept in the big city (about 250 kms away) have decided to shut down our old FTP server and use an owncloud server for file transfers. Sounded easy enough - just use the Mac Finder>Go>Connect to Server>smb://IP address/sector name which should bring up a sign-in window, except that I can't connect. I tried taking my laptop next door to the design studio, using a different wireless network and router and still no go. Took the laptop up to our local Apple service centre, hopped on their wireless network and voila, the sign-in window popped up. I'm starting to think that we may need to alter a router setting in our prepress office, but it's something I'm not really familiar with. We had the same issue when trying to connect to the Esko server when we replaced our Nexus server hard drives. No problem connecting to the internet, but we couldn't connect to the Esko server to release our licenses and had to go thru a painful remote license renewal by a couple of techs on the other side of the world using TeamViewer to get into our server. I'm pretty sure that it was caused by the same issue. Anybody out there familiar with router settings, specifically for connecting to outlying servers?

General Prepress / Pantone Digital Library
August 09, 2016, 09:47:38 AM
One of our larger clients wants our presses to start using the Pantone 2014 Digital Library as a reference tool for spot colours, rather than the printed Pantone Guide that they use now. Anybody else out there using presses hooked to the digital library? If so, how does it get set up? Is prepress involved in any way? Thanks for any info - can't find much on the googler.
