Title: iGen4->iGen5 Problems
Post by: Slappy on July 22, 2018, 06:24:36 PM
After running our iGen 4 pretty much into the ground (it was a beast though, for a long time!) Xerox installed the iGen5 a few months back and although it went smoother than I though for basically a weekend setup, there's one glaring problem we can't resolve: Text rendering blowwwwwwws.

More specifically, just about any color or typeface that's not being trapped - just sitting out there on a white background - is almost getting choked back so it appears much lighter & thinner than it should. The only setting on the Fiery RIP affecting text that I've been shown is something like "Enhance Text" which doesn't mean much to me, and is the default setting. On or off though, that one setting doesn't do much to alleviate the problems.

On a whim, I tried re-sending some of the files back to the RIP after running Pitstop's Convert Text to Outlines Action and it really seemed to make a huge difference for the positive, but that's not a solution far as I'm concerned.

I had a higher-level Xerox Tech stop by late last week, talked for a while with him about it & he honestly said most of the installs he's seen run Freeflow, and Fiery RIPs are few & far between. I don't know why that is, or if we can change to Freeflow at this point either. I'd think that would introduce more problems trying to match previous jobs run through Fiery, esp in regards to color, screens etc. They're coming back Monday to talk with us & the iGen Ops, so I'll report back on how that goes but I didn't get a vibe that they'd a solution.

Is it doing that on black text?

When you say Fiery, you're running CWS, right? What version?

We had a similar problem on a relatively new iGen4 Diamond running Freeflow.
There was a setting to help eliminate that, but on plain small serif text it looked like the
type was being choked.
I will ask the machine operator if there was a fix for that.
We are all scattered to the wind as the shop basically shutdown so it might take a day.

Had NOTHING but problems using CWS 6. Rolled it back to 5.8 to alleviate our issues. Not running an iGen, but running a Versant 3100. Available here: --> CWS v5.8 (https://www.efi.com/en-gb/marketing/fiery-servers-and-software/downloads/fiery-command-workstation-58/)

Huh, thx for the tip. Rolling it back isn't even an option, not my dept, not my monkeys kind of scenario. I guess I can be tasked with chasing down the culprit, but not actually taking any action. Yet.

Not everyone has this option. Like us. We could for $25K though.

Talked to one of previous iGen operators. He said there are multiple ways to fix that problem, but all the fixes he had are through Freeflow.

Several hours spent yesterday with two of their "Specialists" or whatever onsite. I won't even go into the ridiculous shit they had me trying, but none of it made a damned bit of difference anyway. Finally, one of them mentions somebody else locally has the exact same setup we do, Fiery RIP and all, so I loaded up some jobs for them to take & run there to see what happens.

Coming back Monday, I'm skeptical about having any resolution. They're quick to point out all of the "New and fantastic things" the Model 5 can do, they don't seem to understand the put put is undeliverable, who gives 2 shits if it can print white & clear??

They need to get it working! or Give you a machine that works!

Why don't you just stop trying to print things with type? That will that will solve your problem and you can get on with utilizing all those great features they are going on about!

I did ask one of them if the 5 is positioned for shops that only print images, like photo books without any text? I think the sarcasm came through just fine.

Yeah, we've expressed that same sentiment - only with more shouting & lots of cursing.
