Hello, I have I little problem with some fonts on snow leopard.

I am trying to use the egyptian hieroglyphs (unicode slot: U+13000 - U+1342F), but it seems they don't work on leopard.

I have installed this font: http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/fonts-african.html#egyptianhieroglyphs and in fact I can see the characters in the characher palette, but when I open a file, or I run an application using this set of character, my computer does not recognize them, and it only shows the classic series of black squares.
As for instance, I cannot see any hieroglyph in this test page http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/egyptian-hieroglyphs.html , or in this page of wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_hieroglyphs#Unicode , even though my font i correctly installed.

What is the problem? Have I to set some preference somewhere to support them?

Or maybe is it a bug of leopard?

Is there anything that I can do?

thanks in advance

What type of font file and where/how are you installing it?

the font is a ttf (Aegyptus313, you can find it here: http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/ )

I intalled it with fontbook, in the main computer library (not in the user library)

I installed it (I'm on 10.5.8) it I'm getting italicized Roman characters, the full alphabet.

Are these supposed to display symbols?

yes, but the symbols are in the slots U+13000 - U+1342F , they don't appear in the preview.

Try to open this page:

http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/egyptian-hieroglyphs.html

do you see any symbols?

you need to change the keyboard text language.
Go to your sys prefs, select "Language & Text, go to the input sources and select Arabic or whatever lang. you need.

also, If you notice when you did that, there will appear a little US flag at the top right of your screen (if you had US as your orig language). If you select that and change it to the Arabic flag and open the keyboard viewer you will see which key has what symbol.

sorry david, but my problem is not with "egyptian arabic", it is with "ancient egyptian hieroglyphs"..

ancient egyptian hieroglyphs is not arabic, and is not a language supported by leopard, so I cannot chose it..

and anyway, the problem is not there: I have no problem with the visualization of arabic, chinese, or hebrew fonts, it is only these slots of unicode characters that do not work..  :banghead:

Yes.

Do you not see the symbols when you visit that page?

I don't see some of the glyphs they show in the font itself. I was able to set some in Indesign.
