Digital Printing / Re: G7
August 03, 2018, 03:59:26 PM
Hopefully you know what the midtone range for G7 should be (which I believe is what you were asking about at the start of this topic). As long as your numbers are within that expected range I wouldn't be worried about seeing no change.

[font=Helvetica, "Helvetica Neue", "Liberation Sans", Arial, sans-serif]Remember G7 is still just a standard for color matching, so the numbers are likely going to be in line with other color standards that are in use. It's not some magic system that makes all your work come out colorful and happy (sadly).

Digital Printing / Re: iGen4->iGen5 Problems

Why don't you just stop trying to print things with type? That will that will solve your problem and you can get on with utilizing all those great features they are going on about!

General Prepress / Re: Strange email from "Adobe"

Quote from: AaronH on July 18, 2018, 01:18:06 PMYeah once I confirmed it through talking to Adobe through a chat on their site. Turns out that we're violating their Terms of Service by using licenses intended for freelancers.  So yeah. Really fun.

Violating the Terms of Service? You could just claim that all the users in your office actually are freelancers. It's not your fault that you all just happen to work in the same office, and have long term contracts with the same employer.

A valid argument could probably be made that this actually is a phishing scam. Just because it came from Adobe's marketing or account management people or whatever, rather than a bunch of crooks out to take all your money...    :o  Hmm...

Random Technology / Re: EU Article 13
June 22, 2018, 04:08:28 PM
Hmm... I wonder if it's possible to turn off the internet? :'(

That's going to be the only way to comply with this if it passes since, when you get down to it, the internet is just a platform for sharing data between computers/users. Data, of course, is created by people, or generated by programs (created by people), so quite literally everything would be subject to this thing.

Maybe just turn off the internet in the EU?   :shoots_self:

If I remember correctly you are using an epson for color proofs.

You could try and get some samples of the actual stock the job is running on (cut down to 28x36 or whatever you can run through your proofer) and print proofs on that. You might need to cut back on the ink coverage a bit to reduce wrinkling but it should work fine. Back at a shop I used to work at we ran all our 2 sided proofs out using just our house uncoated stock and it worked fine.

General Prepress / Re: Spot Varnishes
March 28, 2018, 04:58:39 PM
We do a lot of work that has mailing panels and we do the inkjet work in-house. When the piece gets an AQ coating we will always knock out the ink jet area by cutting the blanket (the press guys love that). I don't doubt that there are coatings available that can be ink jetted on but we apparently aren't using any of those.

The majority of work we do that gets coated will be some form of AQ, but still, we also to spot varnishes from time to time. Usually some combination of spot dull and gloss, or a dispersion with a dull varnish and gloss AQ.

I'm not too familiar with all the different coatings we use here, and it doesn't help that our job tickets just list the coatings as a string of acronyms but what you are looking at is fairly common.

Generally what we do is run a gloss flood aqueous with the coater (blanket) and the dull applied via plate as a dispersion. Actually just had a job like this running on press and had the press guy explain a little bit about how it works. Spot dull goes on first, then the flood. As it dries the dull will start to show up through the flood until you have the dull and gloss as separate areas on the finished piece. It's a chemistry process, not a water/oil reaction so I'm not at all sure about the coatings/inks involved since, as you way we are prepress, not press operators.

This is true, but sadly it often feels like I am using a wrench instead of a hammer, or screwdriver in place of a pry bar...  :undecided:

Has anyone seen my hammer?!?! (looking at you press guy)

Adobe InDesign / Re: Cant move objects with mouse!
February 13, 2018, 05:45:38 PM
You know, moving objects is a lot more work than resizing a box. Maybe it was the computers way of telling you that you are working too hard. and should just take it easy.

If you were on a Mac using a magic mouse, I'd say you are having issues because the magic's gone  :P

That shoe idea though. Brilliant!  I suspect a boot would be even better though. More weight means more damage when you throw it.

General Prepress / Re: Oversize PDFs
February 09, 2018, 09:51:24 PM
I can't comment on how well changing the UserUnit value works unfortunately, but I can confirm that we set up jobs using the scale up method to get around the size limit. To be fair we are doing all our large format printing in-house for everything, but we do work things as diverse as banners, stand up displays and whole room installations.

In the case of the third-party services asking for artwork actual size, I'd check with them to see how they suggest you get around the size limitation. After all it's their requirement and they must have dealt with it in the past.

Macintosh / Re: New(er) computer ... maybe

Well 10.6 was the last decent OS Apple released so you aren't missing much if you can't update any further.

I can tell you that those cons are mostly shared by our Djet system. It isn't particularly massive though, just 2 epson 7272's (think 9900 size) stacked, and we don't actually have a catch bin so everything just gets dumped onto the floor. Otherwise, yea, paper management. It's fun wrestling a 40" roll of paper 6 feet up to the top unit and then stringing it through to the bottom unit. Especially when the humidity is all over the place and the paper starts curling.

Still, it's way better than doing it all manually.

How about not hooking the new system up to the internet? That should keep it safe.

Quote from: Joe on December 18, 2017, 08:11:52 PMStill weird to me it is so hot there in the middle of winter (here)! :rotf:

 :hot:
It's hard for me to know it's Christmastime since I moved to Sacramento. In Fresno, at least it was foggy and cold so you got an idea it was winter. In the Bay, it was foggy and raining (not at the same time, jerkwads), so you knew it was winter. Here in Sac, I'm wearing short sleeves and I don't even have a jacket. Our bindery guy is wearing shorts. We still hit the 70s from time-to-time in December. I'm just not in the right frame of mind for Christmas.

Ummmm...we get rain and fog at the same time a lot here.
But Joe, after being on here for some years, I've decided that Southern Illinois is the weird weather area of the US.  :undecided:

One thing about it is if you don't like it wait 5 minutes and it will change.
Oddly enough, we say the same thing a few hundred miles north of Joe in Wisconsin where I'm located. (We get the fog with rain thing here too).
