General Prepress / Batch QR Codes
April 19, 2022, 09:22:24 AM
We need to create about 200 unique codes. Also, they need to be easily identifiable so we know what code goes with what. Any easy way to do this?

Adobe InDesign / Linked Word Doc font issues
May 06, 2020, 08:57:08 AM
Was provided an ID file with multiple word docs placed as links. All of them are modified when I open the ID file. When I update them, they seem to be holding onto the font from word instead of the font it was set to in ID. For example, before I update them in ID, says the font is Avenir Next. When I update them, the type defaults to Calibri, which is the font used in the Word document. Is there a preference on my end that I need turned on or off?

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Epson 10600 problem
March 03, 2018, 10:27:45 AM
Have an older Epson 10600 that I use on occasion. Was a workhorse for me for years. Was working fine up until about a month ago. Uses older Dupont Cromanet software to rip the files. Problem I am having now is the printhead goes across a few times, then parks itself for a minute or two, then goes across a few more times, etc. It will print, but a 24x36 print could take over an hour to print. I had one of the IT guys here look at it, but he's a younger guy that isn't familiar with this equipment and software at all. The transfer of data from the PC to printer seems to be OK according to him. He pretty much put his hands up in the air and said he doesn't know what the problem is. I can't find anyone locally to service the printer to troubleshoot. Epson won't service it and their cost would be prohibitive anyway. So, anyone have any ideas on this? I am not an IT guy at all so I may not be putting enough details into what I am asking. I just want the thing fixed. Any help with this is appreciated. Thanks.

Fonts / Font management for PC running Windows 8
September 12, 2016, 10:41:32 AM
Finally upgraded to a new PC recently at work and need to grab some font management software. Old PC was running ATM. I'm a Mac guy so I'm not really too familiar with the Windows environment, but got charged with that task. What are you guys using that you would recommend?

We are running an old version of Spinflow version 2.1. The hard drive of the PC that this was running on went down and cannot be saved. All the data was lost. Reinstalled the software from the original cd's on different PC. No problem there. However, in order to do anything we need the passcode for the dongle. Prompt says to "contact your dealer" for the code. Contacted Spinflow to get code. Their response was that they no longer support that version. Told them I don't need support, I just need the code for the dongle for the license that we already own. They say that they can no longer give that information. Apparently not anywhere in there system anymore. Why? Who knows. All I know is now they want me to upgrade to the newest version for about $1000.

Poked around on their web site looking for anything and downloaded Spinflow tools. Supposed to be able to use this to recover a lost passcode for the dongle. Can't get this to work as it says "Dongle not found". I have a feeling this version of Spinflow Tools only works with the latest versions.

Of course, no documentation anywhere from the guy that installed it here years ago and he is long gone from the company.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to recover this passcode? Maybe an older version of Spinflow Tools that works with v2.1?

Hoping someone out there can help. Our IT guy is pulling his hair out trying to get this resolved.  Thanks in advance for any help.

We have an older SGI server running Unix from aprrox 2002. Not sure what version of Unix that this is running. We are unable to connect to the server (AFP). Other Macs we have we can connect, but they are running 10.6 or 10.7. 10.6 connected no problem out of the box. For 10.7 we had to put some code in Terminal to connect. No big deal. It appears Apple has dropped support for AFP. Several calls to Apple support and it appears we are SOL. Did a lot of poking around doing web searches, but wasn't able to find a solution. Has anyone else experienced this and is there anything we can do to get this machine to connect?

At this point we may just send the Mac back and try to find a "newer" iMac that is running 10.7. Thanks Apple.

General Prepress / Proof reading/copy editing
April 11, 2013, 07:43:50 AM
We have a workbook that we are producing for a client. Not too large, only about 28 pages. Pages all built in InDesign. This needs to go to a proof reader to check for correct grammar, punctuation, etc. The person doing the proof reading does not have InDesign. I was going to send the proof reader a PDF and let them mark it up within the PDF, however, knowing this client, there could be quite a few corrections and it might get a little crazy. Just wondering, how do you guys handle situations such as this?

Artwork Systems / Vector Trap module issue
January 24, 2013, 10:13:53 AM
We don't have any tech support for this so hoping you guys can help. We have been using 4-stage trapping forever without any issue or problem from the customer. Recently though the company that we do this work for reorganized and now we are dealing with different people for the same exact work. The new people we are dealing with do not like the way that the files are trapped. The traps aren't "wrong" they just don't like the way they look when you zoom in on them at 2000% (ugh, see attached image).  So, I have been playing around with the settings within the trap module. My choices are 4-stage, Packaging, or Commercial. I have tried all sorts of different settings within each choice. Not having much luck. The original files are all created in Illustrator (usually CS5, but sometimes 6). 4-stage will put a Trap layer in the Artpro file which is absolutely needed, where as I cannot get the other 2 to generate a trap layer. Packaging and Commercial will put trap in the file, but seem to do it on the first unlocked layer in the illustrator file. I thought a workaround may be to put an empty unlocked layer in .ai file and rename that layer in Artpro, but the traps are inconsistent. The trap it is putting on would be acceptable, but like I said, it's inconsistent and not trapping all the areas it should be. We could trap manually, but the volume is sometimes pretty high and would be too time consuming. We are using Artpro 8.1 and running Nexus 9.0.3. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also, just for my education, maybe someone could explain what exactly 4-stage trapping is vs Packaging. The manuals that were left to me don't say sh*t.

Thanks.

Adobe InDesign / Calendar Creation question
December 06, 2012, 03:27:48 PM
Hey folks, I need to create a calendar in InDesign. The calendar is for a school and is fairly basic. I remember using a script that I have called Calendar Wizard in the past that is pretty easy to use and works pretty good. Here's the thing..... I am going to be supplied a spread sheet in excel that list events, meetings, etc. for specific days. Not every day will have an event. What is my best way to import that info into the calendar? Not sure if CW will play nice with the spreadsheet if at all. I also thought maybe Data merge might work OK for this too but not sure. Copying and pasting could be a PITA. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Fonts / Help with font please
November 27, 2012, 10:56:09 AM
Anyone know what font this is?

Occasionally have to print spot colors on this press. Only have 4 units. For certain work it's pretty simple, like a 2/c bus card. I designate the spot color as a process either in the native file or in the page workflow (using Nexus 9.0.3) , say PMS 295 as Cyan, and the pressman would ink up the cyan unit with 295. However, it gets a little crazy sometimes if we run a 5 or 6/c job (CMYK + spot). Pressman insists he cannot map the spot color at the press to a certain unit. I know he can map a process color to another unit, for instance he is out of black plates, so he maps the black to the cyan unit or whichever. So, my question is, is it possible at the DI for the pressman to map a spot color to one of the units on press?

Kodak Preps / Need Preps Marks
September 05, 2012, 09:09:35 AM
Long story short, one of my raid servers is down and all my Preps marks were centrally located there. I have some marks located on the Mac that Preps runs off of but don't have all that I need.  Went back to the install disc and still don't have certain marks I need. Looking specifically for the marks Text Mark and Flat Identifier Text Mark. If anyone has these and could email to me that would be greatly appreciated. I would build these but am unsure how to for those because they are dynamic marks. Running an ancient version of Preps 4.1.2. Thanks in advance!

Kodak Preps / Preps Upgrade questions
June 07, 2012, 11:03:12 AM
I have been running an old version of Preps 4.1 for a very long time now. The software itself still running good and serves it's purpose for what I do. Not really doing too many crazy impo's, mostly SS, SW, WT or WT. And most are flat layout, saddle stitch or perfect bound. Problem I am running into now is that I can only run this on a Mac that is running a classic OS. I have 2 copies that are running on old G3's. One of the G3's died a couple days ago, but fortunately I had a back up G3 and the second G3 I already had running. Anyway, so the boss sees me trying to resurrect another old G3 to make sure I have at least one backup and asks me if we can upgrade to a version that runs on OS X. So, I started poking around to do some research and the Kodak site doesn't offer much info on it. My questions for you guys and gals are does Kodak still make Preps? Creo made it when we purchased it in 2001! Can I upgrade from 4.1 to the latest version of Preps? Any idea on cost whether it's an upgrade or just an outright new purchase? Possible to pick up a used copy? I didn't come across any doing a search. Any new bells and whistles that you find really helpful? Is it worth it?

Any tidbits of info on this would be great. Thanks in advance.

Adobe InDesign / Packaging Images Scaled to size
March 18, 2012, 10:03:41 AM
Hi All- Not sure if this is a question better suited for the Photoshop forum or not, but the original files are InDesign docs, so here goes.....

I have a rather large book with hundreds of images throughout. My customer needs to have all the Photoshop images scaled to the exact size that they are placed at in Indesign. Apparently they need this for their archiving purposes. My question is, is there any kind of script or trick that I can accomplish what I need to without seeing what size the image is scaled to in InDesign, then opening in Photoshop, scaling and resaving? If it was just a few images, I wouldn't care, but for this project, there are hundreds of images and would be extremely time consuming to do it that way.

Any help with this is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Artwork Systems / Opening/Viewing OPPO file
January 27, 2012, 12:18:45 PM
Running Nexus 9.0.3. Anyone know how I can open an OPPO file (.opo)? I use InSight to open or edit PSTI files, but that will not allow me to open OPPO files.

Printer is insisting that files I gave them for a previous job were not trapped. The workflow I use for their stuff creates a trapped Artpro file which then among other modules goes through a Print File to Nexus Module where the OPPO file and link are produced. I opened all the Artpro files (in Artpro) and they all have trap. The proofs I made are from the OPPO file and the trap is visible in the proof. I give the printer the Artpro file with mapped tiffs as well as the .opo file and low res link. I don't want to get into a pissing match with the printer. I just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before the next round of work comes through that will going to the same printer. This is the only printer I have ever had to supply an OPPO file to.

As an aside, I am strictly doing the prepress on this and I believe that printer is just trying to make my company look bad so they can do the prepress as well. I'm sure nobody has heard that one before..... :banghead:

I attached screen capture of the workflow if that helps. Thanks again in advance.
