Take a look at this video for an explanation on why Xerox is the only one that does 2400 dpi.

You can get some good deals there on 3rd party inks, depending on what kind of printer you have.

Artwork Systems / Re: PCC Screening folder

What's your upgrade process like?  I usually just run the installer and point it to the same folder as the current install and it overwrites whatever it needs.  I never have to move the PCC screening folder.  I sometimes delete everything, except the PCCscreening folder, and run the installer.

Are you talking about Mac OS X?  I though the newer Intel Macs could boot off USB?

We have 2 of those machines and we had to have our tech guy upgrade the RAM on the machine because it was printing slow.  It made a big difference.

Freelance / Re: Trying to freelance some more...

I have heard of gotprint.com.  In fact I have used them once before and they did an excellent job.  I had some business cards to print out and I googled cheap business cards and they are the first link that came up.  I looked at the address and it turns out they are basically on the next block from where I work.  It took them 7 days to print out my 500 business cards.  They do have a rush service that they offer for a faster turn around time.  I don't think that anyone, around here anyways, can beat their prices.  Good luck with the freelance work!!!

We had our tech guy come out and take a look at the printer and paper.  He said it's probably the coating on the paper that is causing this.  He took back the rolls and is replacing them with rolls from a different batch.

Thanks for the reply

I feel your pain.  I'm hoping your next printer eases all your woes!

Other Imposition Software / Re: Metrix
May 12, 2009, 06:04:24 PM
Hello all,

We don't do a lot of books here.  In fact we do about 2 - 5 a year.  Our work is mostly one sheets, mini posters, packaging and stuff like that.  We are looking into how JDF can help us with automation or maybe job tracking or inventory tracking.  To me the most obvious way to implement JDF is our prepress department.  I'm hoping Metrix can help with this.  Was metrix made with imposing books in mind? or are things like one sheets and mini posters and odd shaped packages something Metrix can easily deal with and automate?  Any feedback?  Thanks in advance.

I heard somewhere that the humidity of the room can affect the printer in bad ways.  One of them is the banding.  We have our output department kept at a certain level of humidity 24/7.  Maybe that's why you're getting banding.

Wow, your comments surprise me!  Our 9880 has been a great printer.  We've had it four a couple of years now and it has never given us a problem.  Our old 9600 was the one giving us the banding problems.  That's why we had to get rid of it and get the 9880.  I'll take your 9880 if you don't want it

We use it mostly for problem jobs.  Whenever we have a weird pattern that we can't get rid of we run stochastic proofs or plates.  The only drawback we see is that in flat tint areas we see grain that isn't appealing to the eye especially when you put it next to an proof with an AM dot.
