Any of you ever get design work? I struggle with this. I have, once upon a time, earned a living as a designer, but it was all a ruse. I suck as a designer. And I hate that kiss-ass shit that goes with wooing a client. The less interaction I have with a customer, the better. I'm content to mutter to myself in my corner and just plod away fixing crap and making plates.

At any rate, I was recently asked to design a postcard with a pirate theme. The customer gave me a few lines of copy, the pirate direction and nothing else - not even their logo. I came up with this, and I was pretty proud of it. It's still a work in progress - the first proof went out to the customer last night to see if they like it. See photo below:
"There's been a lot of research recently on how hard it is to dislodge an impression once it's been implanted in someone's mind. (This is why political attack ads don't have to be true to be effective. The other side can point out their inaccuracies, but the voter's mind privileges the memory of the original accusation, which was juicier than any counterargument ever could be.)"

I suck at desing, unless I'm given like two weeks to do it

I'm asked to design all the time. I keep responding I'm a printer not a designer and there's a big gigantic difference. I've never trained in design or marketing, identity business, I'd tell them. They then get this stupid look on their faces. I just finished a large stationary-annual report template job for investment bankers.

You're on to something Farabomb. Just do a shitty job and that will be the end of that.  :cheesy:

I will freely admit that i have a 4 year degree in desing. (Hush, Beer.  )

I fell into Prepress by accident and I'm perfectly happy here. I DO have to do LOTS of desing work, though - as well as fix the crap that other desingers send. :banghead:

We are a "full service" printing company so there are 3 of us that do desing work.

But you did a great job considering you weren't given any direction.

I have a degree in Mass Communications and Journalism - Advertising cluster. I worked in Advertising and Marketing for a few years before going in to PrePress. But I was a writer; I wrote copy for print ads and radio ads. I even produced and directed several on-air spots. But I know my design work is lacking. I just happened to like what I did on this project though; my pride wanted to show it off. Really the title of this thread should have been, "What are you working on?"

I've been getting more design work in than print jobs. And I'm not liking it. But luckily, I have some very cool clients, except one. I ignore him in every way so he doesn't matter. It angers me when they bring someone in here and introduce me as the designer. Normally, they follow that with telling the customer that the platesetter behind me is a printer.

I do not design and if I ever lose this job I'm screwed. Almost every help wanted ad for prepress lists the qualifications as some sort of graphic design/web design degree. Experience with Quark, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, Fireworks, and Microsoft Office. And they want to pay you $9.00 an hour for all of that experience.

Why? it's almost all I work in these days. Hence my frustration with my choices in vector alternatives. I don't hate Illustrator, I know how to use it VERY well. I just hate Adobe.
