Quote from: gnubler on July 30, 2010, 12:17:35 PMWhen I started my current job and inspected this Mac, I was shocked. There were something like 800 fonts in the Users > Library > Fonts folder and a bunch of crap in the System Fonts folder and there was a broken copy of Suitcase. I shoveled all that crap out (aka I DCS'd it), installed FEX, and haven't had font probs since.

Keep it simple and you should be good. All that extraneous crap is what leads to the Dark Side.

And don't put fonts in the system folder!

You really have to monitor this. App installs, especially Microsoft and Adobe like to put things in places you really don't need them. A good example of this is fonts.

This is for Prepress, NOT desingers. Running slim is not recommended unless you really have a good working knowledge of Macs and their handling of fonts.

Yes! I once crashed a Mac and had to reinstall the OS because I messed with the wrong fonts in the system folder. I also once had a long, involved Quark issue that was resolved by replacing a corrupted font in the system folder.

Font problems lead to printplanet.com? I'd rather ask the Masters at B4P, but that's just my opinion.

Quote from: david on July 30, 2010, 06:57:53 AMWhat I do, is take the plist files and move them to the desktop. Which removes them from system use, but keeps it close so that if the newly generated plist doesn't do the trick, you can put the original one back where you got it from and move on to other trouble shooting techniques.

a little safety net...  just in case
Believe it or not, I actually did that!       :walker:

And for a while there, DCS and dig@sig's to and fro was looking more and more like the knights from Monty Pythons Holy Grail...where one ends up just a head on the ground.

OK. I got pissed off at my font situation after this a.m.'s discussion and decided to wipe everything out and start over. FEX kind of pisses me off in regard that you can't select multiple font folders and delete at once - you have to do them one at a time. BUT, if you select all the fonts in FEX in the preview pane, you and mass delete them and then go to the addition side and press and hold the delete key to remove the folders. I've redone my permissions and cleaned all my caches. I've gone on a successful font diet, and this time I'm keeping it off.

I think you could have trashed your prefs and your FEX Library and it would have made it a lot quicker.

I did that first. It didn't work. I did it again and rebooted after emptying the trash. It still didn't work.

What am I doing? There's a serious discussion going on here.   :embarrassed:   ...and looking at it, I need to be more organised. I started this last week going through old folders in FEX and deleting ones I'll never likely use again. There may be better ways, but it's a start.    :undecided:

It's all good. I will be playing the part of "Sir Not Appearing In This Film."
