Digital Printing / Command Workstation Queues
May 01, 2017, 08:51:59 AM
Hey all, been a busy year here.
We just got a Canon C700 with Fiery. I am somewhat familiar with the Command Workstation interface, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to change the Printed Queue to show more than 10 jobs. The goog only led me to a post from 2012 that no longer holds true. Any body got a clue about this?

Adobe Illustrator / Illustrator 2015.3.1 bug
September 01, 2016, 09:29:20 AM
Here is what I am getting:

Start with the rectangle tool and create a square 1" x 1" (any size will work)
Sign a stroke of 1pt (again whatever weight you want) aligned to center.
Now look at the Transform Panel and see that the size indicated is off, in this case 1.0139 x 1.0139 - it includes the stroke weight in the dimension.

This sucks! If, like me, you use the Transform Panel to resize things, the final object is not true to the size typed in.
This is new to this particular version, I did a check with the older version. Bug reported to Adobe this morning.

CTP - CTF / Need a Screen service technician
July 21, 2015, 04:21:04 PM
Hey all, i am hoping that someone knows a good tech for Screen (Platerite 4100) platesetters. An LD calibration warning came up today, and I know zilch about how to remedy. I called our guy but he kinda disappeared on us.

Seattle area preferably. Thanks in advance.

Adobe Illustrator / Illy CC 2015 stroke shift
July 09, 2015, 09:07:23 AM
So this happened.
Copied from one file to paste into another, the art is offset, only the strokes.
If I select all strokes and assign a color(even the same color) it will snap back to the correct position.
So, why? Never had this happen before.

Did an uninstall/restart/reinstall/restart and the problem persists.

Macintosh / Files not showing on Windows server
July 22, 2014, 03:31:00 PM
I don't have any info on the the server configuration, but we just went to a new shiny Windows box and now if I copy a folder to the server, Ican see it, but not others on the network. I told my IT guy and he says it's some kind of permission thing (I am completely dumb about network)And he was able to get the folder to show.

Today, I was told to find a file in Server/Share/Other dept/Art/The folder I want
But when i went to that location on the network, nothing but one file that was old and, according to the creator, deleted last week. He said that the folder was also renamed, to correct a spelling error, but I still see said error.

Anything leap to mind with you network savvy types?

Pressroom / Image / Punch Tolerance
June 09, 2014, 12:24:51 PM
We are going through a bit of growing pains with a newer outside printer (new to us) and are having them run a web press with an inline punch.
Our image and punch have at times landed up to an 1/8" off center on the length of the sheet. The press has a 17" x 22' impression area. The punch is stepped correctly as is the art, but we have sheets coming back to us uncentered. And the punch not centered to the art.

What is a normal / typical amount of play that a machine/operator should have when running a web? We have not had this issue with the old(out of business now) printer. I believe the machine was the same make. Sorry don't know the model.

Macintosh / FTP connections?
November 12, 2013, 09:39:22 AM
Okay, I am a complete dummy when it comes to ftp stuff. I need to send a file to a vendors ftp site, and I have no idea how to do this! :embarrassed:
Most of the stuff we do is in house generated or Word files from someones secretary, so I don't really ever get to interact with a proper print service or file provider. We are using a new vendor that has a web press for some stuff and I had been just emailing files, but they want me to use FTP now. They supplied the server address, user name and password. What the hell do I do with that info? I can't connect via Safari, is there another browser that will work? or do I need to download a FTP App?

Dynagram / Mavericks disables inpO2 in Acrobat 10
November 04, 2013, 02:07:36 PM
Nothing more to say really, just don't work no more. Just a heads up.
I have yet to try to install inpO2 on Acro 11 yet. I only use this program once in a while, so I just noticed.

Adobe Illustrator / Illustrator CC reeallly sloowww....
October 17, 2013, 09:14:35 AM
Opening and saving files in Illy takes about a minute even on small files. I was blaming out network and crappy drives but then noticed I can open the same file in Acrobat or Photo Shop without any hang up. I also tried opening from my desktop and it was just as slow.

Anybody else having this? Solution? I was thinking re-install, I'll have to Google best method for that.

Oh, '09 27" iMac with core i7

Trade in your old iPad and get a $200 gift card for the Microsoft store. I have an old iPad 2 that may be more fun as an Xbox 360.
Not sure what Apple will give you for your used MS Surface...

Adobe InDesign / Print Booklet error
August 08, 2013, 08:38:05 AM
Running CS6 on iMac-10.8.4

I have an indy file with 8.5 x 11 pages and .125 bleed. Trying to use the Print booklet feature, which usually works for me with no issue, but i am getting an error saying the pages are of an inconsistent size. I checked the page setup and all are set to 8.5 x 11. Has anyone seen this before, what might be the culprit?

Adobe Acrobat / What the hell is causing this?
June 05, 2013, 02:48:57 PM
We recently went to CS6 and now often time when i generate art in Illustrator and save as a PDF, my preview window only shows a silhouette in black.
Is it caused by a setting? Two of my compadres have no issue with this, and one does sometimes, but not always. Old archived PDF versions display fine, as do customer supplied stuff.

Image attached.

I am trying to find a guide for the typical sales person that explains, in a way a sales person can understand, different file types and their uses.

Has anyone come across a good breakdown? My Googling isn't finding what I hoped to find.

Macintosh / Apple Rant #3
October 22, 2012, 12:09:13 PM
I received an email from Apple last Friday.

Dear iMac owner,

Apple has determined that certain 1TB Seagate hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between October 2009 and July 2011.

Our records show that you have an iMac with an affected 1TB Seagate hard drive. Apple will replace your hard drive with a new one, free of charge, under the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program.

Please choose one of the following options to get a replacement hard drive.

Apple Retail Store - Set up an appointment with a Genius.

Apple Authorized Service Provider - Find one here.

Apple Technical Support - Contact us for local service options.
Apple recommends replacing your affected hard drive as soon as possible. Before you go in for service, please back up your data. Learn more about backup options.

Nifty. I have already had my Hard drive fail on me. It was replaced right away at a close by Apple Store, but of all the drive that they use, I got another Seagate!
Now I have to go thru doing the back up again. Not the end of the world, but I wish they would have put in a different drive then.

Looks like out of the 5 iMacs we purchased, only mine has the Seagate drive. The others seem to have the Western digital drives. I'm gonna go buy a lottery ticket.

Adobe Acrobat / Moire and transparency
September 14, 2012, 12:34:31 PM
I have an InDesign CS5.5 file that I need to convert export as a PDF (i have Acro 9 and 10). Problem is that if I use vector art for part of the image that includes many lines close together, I get a moire pattern when i print. If anybody knows why this happens, I would like to know.

So, I took that portion of the art and made it a TIFF image. Problem now is when I export to PDF that area looks fine on screen, but prints as if Multiply Transparency mode is on.
I have checked the linked file and the Indesign file to make sure no multiply is on and that no transparency of any kind is on.

There is a drop shadow applied in InDesign though. I haven't tried printing without it as it needs to be there.

Any ideas?

General Prepress / Cut and Stack
July 06, 2012, 11:43:59 AM
  SO, is this normal?

I have a 10K cut and stack job, 50up 3" x 5" cards.

I want to set up the job for two stacks each of 100 sheets. I did all the numbering (the only variable on the art) in Indesign.

My funky little InDesign Plug-in, Croptima InPlate, is really choking on the 5000 page document. I bailed at about the 1 hour point and it was only 1/3 done. It generally gets slower as it gets closer to the end of the job. I estimate 3-4hours total to finish.

I checked with Apple's Activity Monitor to make sure the program was actually doing something and not locked, it was, just really slow.

How long should I expect an impo like this to last?  Anyone have any experience with cut and stack?

Macintosh / Weird HP printer conflict.
July 02, 2012, 12:53:40 PM
I finally made the move to Lion this weekend. Kind of a cluster F@(K.

A while back I Seagate drive from Costco to do a Time Machine backup before pulling the trigger.
I had my machine lock up about 6 times while doing the backup and my machine would not restart. It would hang on shut down, had to do a hard shut down each time.
It would take about 15 minutes to restart also. Finally got a full back up. Went to Apple Store to get their diagnosis, and my iMac fired right up and worked fine.

Guy says unplugging for a while will reset a machine. I get home, same issues as before slowwww...!
I figured it had to be the new drive, the driver or something. Disconnect restart.....slow.
Then I thought about the printer, last week my wife mentioned the scanner wasn't working. Disconnect...bam, restart and no issue.
Drive was not the problem, the printer was for some reason.

Did the Lion install and had a brief scare when it wouldn't self restart. But manual one did the trick. Up and running with now issues, and Time Machine works great too.

ANyway, nice frustrating weekend. Can't wait to install  :sarcasm: Lion next month
