That's like taking the kids to the grocery store and tell them, "Don't put potatoes in your ears." It then becomes their life's obsession to stick potatoes in their ears.

apparently we have less sheep than we used to...

Fewer than five sheep per person
"The ratio of sheep to people dropped below five to one in 2022, for the first time since the 1850s, when national sheep numbers were first recorded. In 1982 New Zealand sheep numbers famously sat at 22 per person.

New Zealand...
where the children are smart and well behaved...
the women are strong...
the men are lively...
and the sheep are nervous

Glad you figured it out. I'm working for the State of CA now, and they only have Windows down here. I suppose we can put in for Macs next time we need new equipment, but if it's currently working I don't think we can replace it.

I'm not currently on a Mac, but isn't there a folder in Mac OS/Utilities/Printers/PPDs ? IIRC it's something like that and you can put it in there and it will show up like a virtual printer.

We're very low volume. We currently have a Baum... not sure the model, but a newer Baum model is also one we've been looking at. Good points to consider about the feed.

Bindery / Folders

We're in the market for a new folder. Currently looking at a Duplo for $9600. Needs to be in the $10000 price range new. The largest sheets we print (that need folding) is 12x18. An MBO is probably overkill for what we do, and also probably too expensive. Any recommendations? Nothing fancy... usually just fold in half or brochure/letter folding (and engineer/z folds).

Adobe Acrobat / Re: Acrobat forms

They have all our stuff locked down pretty tight. I couldn't even add the laser printer in my office. I was able to add some scripts to ID and create some PDF fixups in Acrobat, but can only use certain, approved locations. I was able to install (and use) FontBase, a free font management software, because I can't drag and drop fonts to the Fonts folder in ID. I get why IT does it, but some of it is overkill.

Yeah - I get what the end result was. I was a little distracted because I'm on this webex all day, every day this week and still trying to work.

I don't know what kind of voodoo magic I thought was gonna extract the names out of the field in the individual files. I should just chant and swing a dead cat over my head while facing east.

there was a mention about win 7 or above for this to work
OK. That worked... but it copied the file name and not the field contents of the pdf, which is what I really need.
This would be great if the customer had named the file with the name of the recipient, and not some random initials (which don't even match the name).

Windows 10 Enterprise

Attempting to past to Notepad (ctrl-V) yields zero results (nothing... right-click paste it's greyed out)

Dragging and dropping to notepad is garbage.

Quote from: DCurry on July 09, 2024, 09:20:48 AMNo typing required. Get all the PDFs in a folder, select all, copy. Open Excel and paste. It will paste the file names.
I'm in SDP training all week, but I did spend a second and tried this. No dice.

Quote from: DCurry on July 09, 2024, 08:11:04 AMAnother option for getting them all into one InDesign doc is to use Data Merge and treat it like a variable data job. You would just need to create a list of the file names (easily done) and use that as a data file and pull in the PDFs as a variable image.

If they all live in different directories that might be a problem, but maybe you copy them somewhere to get them in one folder.

(I know you already solved your problem - just spitballing for next time!)
I thought about that option too, but figured it'd be faster to place than to type.

To keep the form field unique, the only way to combine the files is in an Acrobat Portfolio, but it still will only export 1 page at a time and print only one page at a time. The only way to unite them to a single file was to hand place individually into ID. Then you could use the PDF fixup to fix the A4 page size to 8.5x11 all at once. Remember - I don't have PitStop.
