General Prepress / UPC Bar Width Reduction
June 14, 2022, 07:06:16 AM
So I've been asked about UPC BWR (bar width reduction). And in Kodak Prinergy, I can not find anywhere where it refers to it. I understand the concept. But I'm being asked about what are setting is. And I can't find anything about it. Nor has management provided any info, which they are the ones who have told me all the other settings.
Anyone ever dealt with it in their workflow, that can give me any more real world feedback?

Kodak Preps / Preps 9 Marks issue
February 09, 2022, 09:12:06 AM
So I've finally been ordered to update our Prinergy system. Which include Preps. We are on v8 of both. And in reading about the updates to 9, I see an important note about Page Marks and Page Bleed marks being affected after the upgrade. And if you use them, that you may not want to upgrade yet.

My question is, has anyone experienced this issue? Or is this one of those issues that Kodak let's everyone know, just in case, to cover their behind?

Should I really even worry about it?

Random Technology / "New" old press
December 06, 2021, 07:30:07 AM
I know it's not technically printing, but though everyone would find it interesting. Found a link for this in a Dscoop (HP digital forum) email, and thought I would share.
Help vote to get this made into an official Lego set. Johannes Gutenberg press https://ideas.lego.com/projects/b8427f5b-0e9c-4d15-90ea-ae24b47c7f9a.

General Prepress / Cool online folding site
March 11, 2021, 02:23:39 PM
I was just introduced to a new tool. And I'm not pimping it. Just want to show you it, as I thought it was pretty darn cool, as I have not seen anything like it before.
This site allows you to upload your 2 page PDF and then you can tell it how it folds, and it will mimic it on screen. Pretty darn cool.
Here's a sample of one I did, I used their demo file and the way it folds is the way I wanted it to. http://gofoldit.com/demo/hnhhr0i8

Wondering how many of us this "really" effects. I was a bit shocked at first, but then thinking about it, makes sense and is probably long over due. Still going to be some growing pains as usual.

But again, if we just had the Creative Suite on disks, we could just keep an older version and keep on rocking the Type 1 fonts...FOREVER!!

Kodak Preps / Preps and flatbed cutter
October 21, 2020, 11:24:56 AM
Anyone have any experience using Preps to do layouts for a flatbed cutter? I have been tasked with finding out if Preps can do layouts for it, and if it can send the data to the cutter so it can process it correctly. I know these cutters are usually pushed by CAD systems, but wondering if Preps can do it to. I also know that Preps has some functionality for packaging, but not sure how that plays into this. Really looking for some real world knowledge.

Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat 2017 link
April 29, 2020, 12:02:18 PM
For those who still would like to purchase Adobe Acrobat Pro that is not tied into the "Cloud", I have been given the link to the page where you can do that. I was looking for this myself for some time, and finally just got on a chat with the Adobe folks, and they gave me the linke.

And here it is https://www.adobe.com/products/catalog.html?filters=de_252Fpdf#!&sa_src=web-messaging. This will allow you to purchase it for either Windows or Mac. And at this time it is $449/US.

Adobe InDesign / InDesign Bloatware
May 24, 2019, 06:20:48 AM
Has anyone figured out a way to disable any of InDesign's bloat? What I'm thinking about is some or all of the extra creative cloud extras that run all the, time, that I don't want. Trying to think of ways to speed this massive turd up. Kinda of slim it down to where it only does typesetting functions, and not everything under the sun. Or at least disable some palettes from even opening in the beginning.  I mean why do we need 5 different ways to get to the same thing?

Kodak Systems / Run Workshop in a VM
April 17, 2019, 01:14:07 PM
Anyone running Workshop in a VM on their Mac. Trying to get around the idea of having Kodak come in to upgrade our server to 8.3, just so we can run Indesign 2019 in Mojava (with the hopes of getting ride of the painful slowness). Thinking of upgrading the Mac to 10.14 Mojava, but Workshop 8.2 won't run on it, in my testing, so was thinking of running that on 10.13 High Sierra in a Parallels VM on the Mac. But everything I try to log into Workshop it crashes. It shouldn't be this difficult.

Adobe InDesign / Indesign Beach Ball effect
April 10, 2019, 11:46:40 AM
Anyone else having issues with Adobe's new feature of adding more "beach ball" effects to Indesign? Where a job used to take 5 minutes now takes 15 minutes because of the beach balling effect? And if so, have you found a fix?  :banghead:

Fonts / T3Font issue
March 26, 2019, 08:01:35 AM
Anyone heard of the font "T3font". I have a PDF that uses it twice in the document. I actually shows up as "T3font_0" and "T3font_1" the first time you open the PDF and check the fonts. Next time you open it and check the number behind the font name increases by 1 for both fonts. IE: "T3font_2" and "T3font_3".

Text looks fine before we process it. Original is RBG black, but we run it through Prinergy to Grayscale, and the PDF looks a bit fuzzy when "Fit to Window", but zooming in looks ok. CSR is worried what the customer is going to say.

Thoughts?

General Prepress / Spot conversion to CMYK
November 20, 2018, 02:56:44 PM
Thanks to Joe posting the Pantone Color Finder, which I really am happy about. But now I'm playing around a bit with it, and I'm finding from differences in our systems.  :banghead:  Which leads me to my question:

How is everyone converting spot colors to CMYK?

For us, it varies on the job and customer. Quick and dirty vs finicky. Could be switched in Indesign (either by default or we create a new color from Pantone ColorBridge book) or in Prinergy via the software automatically.

I just did some testing...wrote numbers down from Joe's link (thanks again), Pantone ColorBridge, Indesign (which is supposed to be using Adobe Color Engine), and then Prinergy (Pantone Lab then CMYK) & (Pantone ColorBridge then CMYK) which is using the Adobe RIP Engine. And I am getting mixed results. Web link, ColorBridge book, and Prinergy (ColorBridge then CMYK) all match. The others do not. And seems weird that Indesign and Prinergy (Pantone Lab then CMYK) do not match, seeing that they are both based on Adobe tech.

I guess, just another reason to always be checking your system.  :cane:

Enfocus / Pistop Preflight Reports
October 18, 2018, 02:57:37 PM
We have Pitstop Pro 13 on one Mac in the shop that we all share. Basically use it to do color changes if needed, and delete text, and maybe the rare text change, not much else. Probably would if we all had it on our Macs locally.

But my question is, management wants us Prepress people to get them a report of all the low res in a document, because the customer to sent in the file is too dumb to know what they did. I've tried PSP preflight, which basically does what I'm looking for, but the bookmark doesn't list each of the offenders separately, but on one link. Is there a way to change that?

I really like that it highlights the offender on the page, when you click on the bookmark. And I'm sure there is more to it than I'm seeing off hand. Help me Rhonda.

I'm sure you can guess that we don't have a service contract, otherwise I would be contacting support for this question.

General Prepress / PDF proofs for emailing
March 13, 2018, 10:13:33 AM
I'm sure we have all ran into this...we make a PDF small enough to email and customer complains about quality, then you send the high res via a file transfer site and now they complain because of the traps are all gooned when they are open the PDF in some other free PDF viewer other than Acrobat Reader. :gom:

Is there such a thing as a happy medium? And now the bosses, want a file size small enough to be able to email and still show trap. Yeah sure...I want a company car with unlimited mileage and gas.

We have Pitstop, and I tired that, which it did a great job, but is there a better way, or some sort of a "standard"?

We are looking at replacing out Epson Stylus Pro 9900 that we use for our IMPO book proofer, which we load cut sheets into to mimic the press sheets. It's getting old :old:, and lines ( which we all know means a new head at this point, too many cleanings and still not fixed ). It's been out of warranty for almost 3 years, so time for a new one.

But since workload has increased so much, it's finally time to look at the two sided options. A couple we've heard of are DJet, and IMPOProofer.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
