I'm in the market to replace my $3 thrift store computer speakers, maybe take a step up. What are you using and why do you like them? I'm looking for something fairly basic for home use - good enough to kick out some bass when Pantera pops up on iTunes and to watch movies so I can actually hear the sound instead of struggling to listening. I'm no audiophile, anything under $50 will suit me just fine. Would prefer something that powers off the computer (via USB) rather than have yet another power cord running to the power strip).

I don't have a specific brand to brag about. I don't even know what brand mine are. I'll look when I get home. I know they cost me $60, they are not powered by the computer and they sound fantastic. I've had them for over 10 years. I would guess they would cost at least $100 today.  As with anything else, you get what you pay for. A $20 or less set will suck. Anything up around $50 should be good. If you want to get really good you'll need to go $100 and up.

Somewhere in between "sucking" and "decent" will be fine.  :whip:

Something like this should work.

Type in "computer speakers" on Overstock.com then select, under $50 ... then take your pick!

Duh, Fooz! Trying to avoid buying crap, like the $10 food dehydrator I bought at the flea market last weekend.

Just want to buy something that won't break in 9 months like everything else.

I know I should be on commission from these guys, but their bang-for-buck is usually double elsewhere's.

My estimate..   <$50 = sucking.

I agree with frailer's estimate. If you want good sound there's a price to pay. There's a price to pay for FREE stuff...
Just break down, find another outlet, spend 60-100 bucks, sit back and listen to some awesome sounds. I'm pretty picky about sound quality, because good sounding speakers is like good food...orgasmic.

I've been using these $3 thrift store speakers for years now.  I'm not super picky, but I think I can do a little bit better. Maybe upgrade to $10 speakers.

Bose are pretty awesome and they last. They will be my next speakers.

I had a Klipsch system that was pretty kickass ... very pricey, but best sound I've heard from computer speakers ever.

beck

I bought some Logitech speakers about 5 years ago for around $50.00.

They do need 110v power.

They have a Sub Woofer (about 8" x 10" x 6" high), and the desktop speakers are about 3" x 3" x 3".

They sound friggin' awesome.

Nevertheless....beck has hit the proverbial nail on the head.

I would avoid Bose. You are paying for the name and at that price point there are better sounding options. Klipsch makes very good speakers but they tend to be expensive. Logitech would be your best bet for a inexpensive 2.1 system. I used to have mine hooked up to my stereo and it sounded great through the infinity speakers but it was overkill.

Klipsch is hands down the best speakers next to JBL but I never see either of those for home computer speakers. I get everything from Microcenter and about a year ago I was looking for new speakers and found that the Bose sounded the best. I have Logitech now and they are very nice. I've had them for about 10-11 years and they still work. The sub is a 2 foot cube.

That sounds like what I am using. Big power woofer and 4 satellites. I can't find a name brand and I've had them for about 10 years so they must be good. The only kind of logo on the front is the letters US.
