Macintosh / Which iMac?
June 10, 2010, 09:28:35 AM
I'm running my G5 iMac off an external firewire backup disk! It is on it's last leg and decided it's time to replace. Looking at the lower end 21.5" version iMac... is the bigger HD and ATI graphic card worth the extra $300?  Would you say screw it and spend the extra $500 for the 27" model? No, I am not rich, but I expect whichever I buy to last several years.

Adobe Acrobat / Compressed object streams?
January 18, 2010, 02:57:06 PM
I got an email from the people who handle our online interactive Pubs. I create an optimized multi-page PDF which our people send to them. The email states: After running some test on the problem pages I noticed that these pages use compressed object streams which YUDU does not support. If you have access to Adobe Acrobat Pro we recommend you optimize your PDF to get rid of any issues YUDU may have with PDF.
When optimizing does not work we recommend loading the problem page into Photoshop and then saving it as PDF, this will flatten the PDF and get rid of any issues
.
My optimiziner is already set to flatten all transparencies, but I did notice a setting "Remove compression" under "Object compression options" under clean-up.
Anyone have a clue what these people are talking about?

Apple Certified Technician: Has anybody done this? Did you use Apple's online training course (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA714Z/A) before you took the test?

Kodak Preps / Bring to front marks...
November 12, 2009, 09:31:28 AM
I know this is simple, but I am brain dead from an intense week.
Template has color bar running across center of sheet with a built in "white area" behind. There are fold marks placed on top of color bar. I need the color bar to knock out (print on top of bleed page elements), but the fold marks need to print on top of color bar. I can't seem to bring the marks to the front. Layered I need pages on bottom, then color bar and fold marks on top.

Macintosh / Mighty Mouse gone crazy
October 07, 2009, 01:01:59 PM
The normal setup: wired mighty mouse, connected to keyboard, OS 10.4.11.
Recently the mouse started misbehaving. If I grab a file and click drag into another location the mouse will just let go randomly and the file gets dropped where ever the cursor happens to be or other unexpected behavior like click hold to lasso several items doesn't work.
Is there a preference somewhere other than finder pref I can delete? Ever seen this?

Kodak Preps / PDF Read Error
September 23, 2009, 10:26:08 AM
Think this may be a combination Preps 5 and Acrobat. I got error when adding PFD files to a Preps 5.3 job: "PDF Native Read Error: ERROR: PDFREAD 3 on file:...". Not all files just ones with Properties PDF Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x)
Anyone else see similar problems?

General Prepress / PDF age boxes and Preps offsets
August 19, 2009, 02:19:11 PM
Couldn't decide which area to post this so...
I have a regular customer who we have been doing four tab size pubs for every month for years. The supplied PDFs  we place in Preps, set offsets (which have always been very consistant) and print. Usually cut and dry, but recently even though the document size hasn't changed the offsets we have always used in Preps don't always work anymore. One pub offsets changed for every page, another half the pages got the old adjustments while half changed.
Doing some digging I noticed the new pages had different box sizes when checked in Acrobat crop pages. Does CS4 handle boxes differently than the way CS3 did? Anybody seen anything like this?

Kodak Preps / Preps 6 Beta
June 29, 2009, 09:34:33 AM
Anyone going to test it? I was just reading about the release and not sure I am too excited about the new features, but we don't do a lot of ganging- or sheetfed for that matter.

Macintosh / spotlight icon at startup!!!! Help!!!
June 12, 2009, 06:44:26 AM
I know I have seen this issue discussed, but unable to locate it and under the gun at work.
At startup all I get is the spotlight icon in top right corner. Able to restart in safe mode (shift key) and restart sometimes fixes, but lately that isn't working. Ran all scripts, etc from external HD and coctail, but this morning the machine is acting up again. Help!!!

Kodak Preps / work and turn trim marks
June 05, 2009, 01:03:44 PM
Work and Turn imposition in Preps 5 with no center gutter. How do I keep the smart trim marks from side A showing on side B? No, I don't want to place the marks manually.
Got to be a simple solution I am missing.

Just curious. How do you check for page position, proper bleed etc. on imposed proofs? Here we print proofs from ripped 1 bit files to either our Epson for gloss or HP1050 on endrolls. I created grids for different layouts showing live copy area/ trim and printed to clear film. We lay these acatate grids over proofs to check page position and bleed. Easier than measuring each page!
How do you do it??

Adobe Acrobat / Flatening all transparencies
February 18, 2009, 04:56:25 PM
I have been charged with the job of publishing all our magizines to the web. The procedure is after we close an issue I make an optimized multi-page PDF and include all links. This is uploaded to our web host. The problem is the host does not want any transparencies in the multi-page PDF. They are created on Mac, but the link embedding and optimization is done on PC using Acrobat 9. Works well, but there is always three or so pages that still have transparencies and the host either kicks them back or charges to fix them. Any ideas on surefire way to flatten and still retail embedded links?

Macintosh / AGFA Duoscan driver/plugin
December 18, 2008, 08:48:05 AM
I am in the process of bringing (dragging) our retiree who comes in once a month to do newsletter into the 21ST Century.
Installed OSX 10.4 and upgraded her to (she insist on using) Quark 6.5. Photoshop 7.
Mac G4 APG with a SCSI card driving an AGFA Duoscan flatbed. Do any of you guys know of either a Photoshop plugin or update for Fotolook software that will work for this configuration? Managed to get everything else working except the scanner!

Macintosh / Installing IP Printer OS9
December 03, 2008, 08:44:48 AM
Got to control myself or this will turn into a rant...
We have a retiree who comes in to do our inhouse newsletter. She insist on doing it on an older Mac using OS 9.2, Netscape 7, Quark 4.0 (yeah, I know...).
We replaced our laser printer for rough proofs with a Lexmark C920 and the Supervisor came to me and ask could I install the driver and set her up to print.
I am really rusty on OS 9. I know I need to get the driver and place in extensions folder and I have network IP address for the printer. Where the hell do I start with this dino?
...no, I cannot shoot her or the computer!! :police:

Are any of you using the new scaling function in 5.3.2 to compensate for creep? How do you go about applying to inside nd outside pages? How is it working for you? I generally have been applying creep numbers to both the inner and outter pages.

Adobe InDesign / Three pictures in one box?
October 29, 2008, 01:55:38 PM
One PDF printed as PS and distilled. One exported directly out of CS3.
What could account for the picture box picking up 3 versions of the same pic in the one printed as PS and distilled??? OPI?
