General Prepress / Disk Catalog Conversions?
May 20, 2008, 06:08:01 AM
I just started at a new job and they have catalog files all over the place.
One catalog of Disk Tracker then another catalog of Disk Catalog maker then a terabyte external drive. If you want to search for an archived job you have to look in all three places. I am looking into if I can convert the Disk Tracker catalog into the Disk Catalog maker catalog or vice versa then also cataloging the terabyte drive.
Then I just need to look in one place, does anyone know if this can be done?

General Prepress / Suppiled PDFs into Indesign?
April 18, 2008, 05:35:56 PM
As a sort of rule any supplied pdfs I get I usually drop them into Indesign to check bleeds colours overprints etc then I export as "Press Ready" 1.4 into our workflow. If I have a multi page pdf I use the multi pdf page import script http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/exchange/index.cfm?event=extensionDetail&loc=en_us&extid=1046385 then do the same checks then export. I was speaking to some coworkers and they said that this is a unnessiary step and I sould just chuck the pdf straight into the workflow. I was wondering about other peoples thoughts on the proceedure?

Adobe Acrobat / Best way to flatten a pdf ?
April 12, 2008, 06:18:39 AM
I was wondering what is the best way to flatten a pdf. From what I understand anything over a 1.4 can cause transparency issues on older rips. (I know flattening can cause other issues but let's forget them for now)

So the options are dropping the suspect pdf into indesign then exporting as a 1.4
or
Drop the suspect pdf into indesign and then post scripting out then distilling as a 1.4

Kodak Preps / Preps send to PDF and map spot colours
April 11, 2008, 11:09:42 PM
Hey guys, as you can see from the image below the "Output as etc" options are all greyed out.

To make use of my CMYK colour bar I want to output as follows

Cyan as Rubine Red C
Mag as 021
Yellow as Rubine Red C
Back as 021

Is it possible to do this using the send to PDF option?

I have just started at a new company and they are using a compose pdf workflow http://www.compose.com.hk

I have done searches for other people using it and I can't find anyone (basically it's just some glorified hotfolders pointing at a harliquin rip). It seems to do the trick to a degree but the big problem I can see with it is that the impo software, workflow and rip are on the same box.  We have four prepress operators and a very large amount of work going through a day so everyone is climbing over each other to get to this box.

What happens is if someone is doing a big impo it holds up other people from releasing ripped files to epson proof, plate etc and in turn creates a big bottle neck.

I have worked at 4 offset printing companies before and I never seen one box used for everything like this.

Is anyone else using this system successfully and do you have the impo software, workflow and rip on the same box?

Kodak Preps / Preps smart marks
April 11, 2008, 08:24:12 AM
After getting a bit of training on preps I have to say I am very inpressed with the smart marks feature. It makes added crops, colour bars, perfs etc a breeze, very impressive stuff

Hello all, I am very happy to find another prepress community on the web, I thought all was lost when prepress forums sold out but then I found you guys  :cheesy:

Anyway, I have just joined a new company where to my horror everyone seems to be editing pdfs using illustrator. I have always considered this dangerous and I have always used pitstop or gone back to the original file to do the edits.

Is editing pdfs with illustrator a safe practice ?
