Title: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: DPSprint on October 04, 2017, 12:11:01 PM
I have got a bit annoyed with this issue with acrobat and seemingly the only way to stop it is to install and run acrobat X instead
I found a thread on the adobe site, and posted on that and adobe were the usual unhelpful to everyone else who posted. So i started a bug report as well and have had a couple more come out of the woodwork with the same issue... and it seems a few things have been tried to no avail.
Figured i would post on here under a new thread in case others have the issue and want to add their thoughts and vote.

https://acrobat.uservoice.com/forums/590923-acrobat-for-windows-and-mac/suggestions/31664974-acrobat-cc-excessive-ram-usage?tracking_code=efbd30a6704418ddf7db113578e67f10

my work around is to restart acrobat a lot... i.e. maybe hourly or so if I'm barely using it, maybe every 15 mins if I'm using it a lot

What version of Mac OS are you using? I am not seeing this with Acrobat DC on Mac OS Sierra 10.12.6.

Im using Yosemite 10.10.5, I did think about upgrading but others are using Sierra and have the same issue.

Exact same problem here.
On a workstation with Yosemite installed we had this problem. In the meantime this workstation has being switched for a brand new iMac with Sierra. Same problem again with Acrobat Pro DC.

We uninstalled Acrobat with the official uninstaller and manually removed the remaining files and folders related to Acrobat. Then restarted the iMac and reinstalled Acrobat Pro. The problem remaines.

Really odd that I'm not seeing that issue. Not that I want to of course. ;D

Just wondering one other thing...what version of Pitstop are you using? I have Pitstop 2017. And have you tried moving the Pitstop plug-ins out of their current location to see if it happens without Pitstop being loaded?

I'm not seeing it either. New iMac, Sierra, Acrobat DC and Pitstop. I do have a lot of RAM tho, and I know the OS gets more out of virtual RAM with the SSD...
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage

... reading that link, I see the OP only has 16gb of RAM. That seems low, by modern OS and CC needs. I have 32gb and am looking at the OWC 64gb upgrade.

Here's a snapshot of my Activity Monitor. This is under moderate usage. I get a lot heavier and it keeps up.

I keep saying, load up on RAM and get an SSD. Programs these days use a lot of processing power and 16gb just won't cut it anymore.

I only have 16 GB and a Fusion drive instead of SSD and I'm not seeing the issue. And right now I have Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign, Prinergy Workshop, Prinergy VPS, and FilemakerPro running plus email and web browsers. They have all been running for over 4 hours. Acrobat is using 575.9 mb of ram sitting idle right now. (a little over a half gb ram)

This is a screen grab, I will have to quit it in a a few more minutes, usually by the time it climbs to 60Gbs. Has been open for about ten mins and I have done work on 2 vector files, both now closed... it just keeps climbing upwards.
And bear in mind this suddenly started on sept 1 2017... never had an issue before then

Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage

and ten minutes later, and I havent opened or worked on any files.

Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage

and I didnt even make it to 60 GB this time

And If i dont force quit quickly, then indesign and everything else will crash and I will have to restart.

I did look at some of the suggestions the 'Adobe' person recommended on the other thread
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2377909

but none work (except reinstalling acrobat x1) and some are for PC versions

Holy crap, DPS.. that's crazy! I haven't seen mine go that high.

I know Acrobat/Pitstop will crash if you don't cmd+opt+j when you open it... wonder if that has anything to do with it?
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: DPSprint on October 05, 2017, 12:44:24 PM
nope, the cmd+opt+j  is standard practice for me every time I open pitstop/acrobat now.... and I am well practiced many times a day.

...and you guys are lucky! LOL

Seems to be just a few of us with the same issue so far. Sometimes I know they test out new things on the smaller countries before releasing into the larger ones, Im wondering if that is the case, but I dont know where the others affected are from.
Though they must know about it by now cos those few of us have been complaining!

Spit-ballin' here but I read that there is a memory leak problem in Acrobat DC involving Sandbox, under Protected mode, in Security (Enhanced), Acrobat Prefs. Might not relate to your memory problem but it can't hurt to turn off Enhanced Security and see if it stops.

Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Ear on October 05, 2017, 01:55:22 PM
... you can also select the Acrobat process, in activity monitor and inspect it. You can see there how much real memory vs virtual memory it is using. As I understand it, Sandbox has something to do with file direction and virtual memory handling. My thought being, protected mode might be a bottleneck, causing a huge RAM load.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Ear on October 05, 2017, 02:00:09 PM
I also delete all the HP files. The HP print drivers, in the library, have all sorts of little snooper programs. Start viewing Open Files and Ports on active processes and you see the stinkin' hpProductResearch, and other such nosey little bugs poking around everywhere. Might be placebo but everything feels faster with the hp stuff gone. Took some digging to get rid of too... shit wanted to install and run from .trash, FFS.

That is interesting. My "Enable Enhanced Security" is checked and I'm not having the memory issue. Well other than the memory loss in my brain.

Mine too, but I did notice it using a ton of virtual memory, for not much tasking. I turned mine off and will keep an eye on it. Just because we haven't been plagued with it doesn't mean we don't have memory leaks... maybe our system is just handling it a little better. Imma keep an eye on this

I have been watching mine, with it off and have noticed little difference, but I wasn't having problems... that I was aware of. LOL

I suspect my HP files came from when I helped the boss troubleshoot a little office printer. But still, installer beware.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage

OS X ships about eleventy trillion HP drivers in its installer. They really shouldn't be doing anything other than wasting disk space if you aren't using them.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: DPSprint on October 05, 2017, 04:24:21 PM
nope, no difference. Just opened a 12 page file that does have a few images in it, not doing anything to it... and watched the ram climb from 500mb to 9 Gb in about 1 min, still climbing...

its almost amusing if it wasnt so annoying when it crashes

where are they located?
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Ear on October 05, 2017, 04:59:53 PM
You can find the location by inspecting the process... but Library>Printers>HP. You can find the app in Applications and uninstall but I go OG and kill the processes, then dig all the contents out of the library, trash, delete. Check for prefs too. Little bots like that can be sneaky about leaving bot turds, to reinstall and snoop some more. But if you don't see it in your active processes, then don't worry about it.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Joe on October 05, 2017, 05:47:55 PM
Hadn't looked for awhile but in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources are a bunch of HP compressed ppd's. Not as many as their used to be so that is good I guess.

But as Ear says...if HP isn't showing up in Activity Monitor they aren't doing any harm.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Ear on October 06, 2017, 09:48:00 AM
I see the PPDs and left them alone, since they are just resource files. This was a dedicated HP folder, in the printers folder of library and it had an hp app and a bunch of little bot plugins. I don't think they ship Mac OS with it... I'm pretty sure it installed when I gave permission to hook up to a little bluetooth HP printer my boss was messing with. So don't get too paranoid... unless you have a little HP office machine hooked up.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Joe on October 06, 2017, 10:41:12 AM
Our building is full of HP printers so all macs have them installed. And of course some people think just because there is a printer on the network they need to install it. Even if they don't even know where that printer is at.

It's very frustrating to encounter this memory leak from Acrobat. I've posted the problem also at the Adobe > Acrobat forum (https://forums.adobe.com/message/9877257#9877257).
Last month I've contacted someone from Adobe via chat regarding this problem. After this chat the problem seemed to be solved. But half an hour later the memory leak started again. I think I'll start another chat again this week.

I AM seeing this, not as drastic as some are experiencing but "the system is out of memory" box comes up a couple of times a week at least. If the computer is left running over the weekend with Acrobat open it will happen for sure. I've seen Acrobat using over 50GB of memory, which is strange because I only have 16 installed. It's like it's "blowing up" like a balloon over time.

Well I think we have discovered the reason for your Acrobat crashing all the time.

Once an application exhausts all of the physical ram it starts using hard disk space for virtual memory which is much slower than physical ram (unless you have an SSD HD). Which also explains why the app slows down a lot before eventually crashing.

I would love to do this...... it just kinda scares me thinking I could not get everything back up and running.

If there was ever a time with no work for a couple of days, I would bite the bullet.

Strange thing is, Acrobat has been a lot more stable lately than it has been in the past few years. Not sure why. Most times the crashes are happening when image editing.

yeap pretty much what mine does, and if its a pdf with lots of images it does it a lot quicker.

Im not sure if anyone on the 2 threads has done a complete wipe of HD etc, but a couple have done a reinstall of DC. and a couple have reverted to X1 and then dont have the issue at all, sort of implies its the software not the hardware?
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: Joe on October 11, 2017, 12:42:40 PM
The fact it doesn't happen to everyone implies it is not the DC software. But the fact it only affects DC implies it is the DC software. Confused yet? The reason I asked about wiping the HD clean and doing a fresh install wasn't implying it is hardware. I believe it is a combination of the DC software and the Mac OS software. Maybe system/application cache files, etc....

Have any of you ran Onyx and cleaned all system/application/font cache etc and the whole range of utilities Onyx has? I run it at least once a month and I am one that isn't having this issue so it might be something worth trying before wiping everything out and starting over.

cool... although I dont know if it will help in our case, most of us with the issue are using pitstop 17... would be frustrating if it was to do with pitstop though cos it does so much.

So I figured I would try a clean install of pitstop 17 (just in case) but it hasnt made a difference.

I do have the CEPHtmlEngine in activity monitor if I launch InDesign or Photoshop but they go away when I close them. In your screen shot it shows it in Red as "Not responding" which could be a problem.

I find that if acrobat stops responding, indesign follows and then any other adobe ones pretty quickly... I think they are probably the biggest ram users anyway

We have a few older macs here with only 8 gb of ram and running CC 2018 without the issues of running out of ram.
Title: Re: Acrobat excessive RAM usage
Post by: DPSprint on October 31, 2017, 12:15:27 PM
yeah its friggen annoying... and TBH I dont think its anything to do with the computers or the RAM amount... it is really bizarre to just watch it climb exponentially over a couple of minutes from a gb to 30 and its only acrobat, nothing else ever does it, some sort of acrobat conflict must be causing it.
Just hope its not pitstop, but I cant work without pitstop so havent been able to try it without it installed to see if it is part of the issue.

Not regarding Acrobat, but regarding InDesign, this has happened 2x this week. Just upgraded to 2018 last week.

Ball started spinning, InDesign became unusable, checked activity monitor and watched the memory usage grow from 12GB, slowly up to 22GB. Had to force quit, took a screen shot after the force quit showing the memory pressure at the time.

Couldn't take a screen shot before the force quit.

Last screen shot doesn't show InDesign. And it shows you are only using a little over 5 gb of your 16 gb of ram. That seems normal to me.

No, this was after quitting Indesign, you can see how high the memory pressure went (the red stuff at the bottom) before quitting.

Tried to take a screen shot at the time but my computer was pretty well unusable with the spinning ball and all.

Yes, only force quit InDesign, the beach ball was spinning, application unusable. Force quit, re-opened and all was fine.

Still running now. Watched the memory go up like a balloon in the activity monitor. Have seen this in Acrobat but never Indesign. Previously have had very few crashes with inDesign, like maybe once every 2 weeks or so.

I think at this point I would try wiping out one of the Macs with this issue and then re-installing a clean Mac OS system and a fresh install of Creative Cloud. I find it futile to talk to Adobe about anything. Hence myself success of getting them to change their shortcut key for a sticky note with output preview open. ( Hint: no success at all! )

Just a thought on the Macs that are doing this. If they have wifi access enabled try turning it off and rebooting and see if the Acrobat memory hogging still occurs.

That's an idea. But it's a ton of work to re-installing all the other software, network settings, printer settings and other stuff. Normally I install a clean OS and use the Migrate Assistant to do that for me. But in that process I also migrate the Acrobat problem.

Is it an idea to uninstall all the Adobe stuff, clean all the remains withe the AdobeCleaningTool and make a Time Machine backup. After that I install a fresh OS from scratch and use the Migrate Assistant to migrate all the apps and settings. When that is finished I install all of the Adobe stuff.

Well it is an idea but there is always the possibility of bringing the problem back if it is being caused by other software that comes back with the migration assistant. When you use the migration assistant to bring back users, apps, and settings it pretty much brings everything back from the old user account like application preferences and the data in Users/~/Library/Application Support. Any of those could be causing the problem. I'm just not convinced it is caused by Adobe software or I think everyone would be having the issue.

If you don't want to re-install everything fresh try creating a new admin account on the Mac and try running Acrobat from the new account. It will create all of the Adobe settings in the new user Library folder fresh. See if you still have the same problem in the new account.

I have just started to have this issue on 1 of our 5 macs all running the latest version of Acrobat DC with Pitstop Pro version 13 update 2. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Pitstop and Acrobat but the issue still occurs, acrobat seems fine for a while and then the amount of memory it uses starts to climb until it cripples the mac. I find it very odd that this is only occurring on one mac and the other 4 done seem affected even though they are all running identical software. Since the last post on here was in November Im assuming that there is still no fix or no one has figured out what causes it? Please could anyone give me any advice as to what to do to workaround this problem. Thanks

The problem occurs in Yosemite, Sierra and High Sierra.

And El Capitan too.
Was fine until about 1 1/2 weeks ago, then DC started grabbing up ram & VM. No updates to OS, Acro or the only third party plugin, FusionPro. There's also a second thread on Adobe's bug report pages. https://acrobat.uservoice.com/forums/590923-acrobat-for-windows-and-mac/suggestions/32123662-acrobat-pro-dc-acrocef-eating-up-21gb-of-memory

Only workable solution I've found, as others on this forum, quit Agrobat when not using it and don't leave it launched for over 1/2 hour (monitoring memory use through Activity Monitor).

Let me add my name to the list of those suffering from this malady. My workstation has suffered for some time now and I've gone to using Acrobat Pro XI for the vast majority of lifting, especially since we're quite dependent upon Suitcase, Heidelberg's PDF Toolbox and recently added FusionPro into the mix just to muddy waters much, much further. We've three workstations utilizing Suitcase, two that have Heidelberg's Prinect software and Toolboxes and one with the added FusionPro.

In regard to the usage and the issue, it's truly gotten to the point that if I do use DC for any length of time, I also open Activity Monitor just so I can kill things off before I brings my system to a screeching halt. I believe my system is the only one here affected, although I'm potentially seeing some symptoms begin in our Preflight computer. I've tried the enhanced memory protection check but after seeing the lack of results others have had, I'm not optimistic about that maneuver's benefit.

yeap thats me!

Y'know I finally got this computer completely set up last week with a new user and it has been working well, no crashes!

Yesterday morning I came in and turned on the computer and unknown to me it started in the old user... which is weird in itself as I had set it up so it would start up in the new user.
But anyway i was working away and realised acrobat had had an update (the pdf icons are all different, take a bit of getting used to), I thought oh interesting, see what happens... LOL an hour later and it crashed... thats when I realised I was in the old user and not the new!

So back to the other user and its fine, as it was last week.

I guess I should check again and see if the old user crashes again

That's a very good question! I don't have an answer to that.
Probably there is more than one cause for this problem. In our case the update worked. In your case the new user account worked. Maybe the last solution did work for us as well, I didn't test that. It's a lot of work to create another user account with the same functionality as the old account.
I keep saying I find it coincidental that in our department only the iMacs were affected with the Enfocus Pitstop plugin installed. Maybe the Acrobat update only addresses that cause.

A bit off topic: Why doesn't the Adobe CC Desktop App notifies me when there is an update available for Acrobat Pro DC? To see if there's an update I must click on 'Help' in Acrobat and then select 'Check for updates'. This is weird, because all of the other Adobe apps will notifiy me through the Desktop App.

Late update: The new user profile solution works like a charm! No more memory eating behavior since three months.
ThnX a ton Joe!
