Adobe Illustrator / Conical Label 1.0
June 11, 2018, 08:44:11 AM
What Is This?

The plugin does just one thing: it takes your artwork and computes a perfect envelope mesh distortion, so the result fits a conical surface of the dimensions you provided.

Conical Label 1.0

Free...for now.

Apple planning to replace Intel CPUs in Macs

Not a fan of this idea. I remember the pain of going from PowerPC chips to Intel. Plus more proof they are going to make Mac OS X and iOS the same thing.

Kodak Systems / Preps 8 Come and Go Collation Marks
February 20, 2018, 02:35:17 PM
Preps v8.0.2 and I have created a new Come and Go template, not using a fold pattern because I can't get a fold pattern to place the pages where they need to be. Then I created a new collation mark with it set to come and go but the collation mark does not show up on my Come and Go template. Has anyone got this to work before?

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Command Workstation VDP
September 15, 2017, 08:48:13 AM
We had 450 variable job the other day that had a full page image on each page (same image on each page) with the variable data which was basically a number at the top and bottom of the image. Took over5 hours to RIP. (only 20 minutes to print)

There must be a better way.

Anyone have any idea or sources on how to use the VDP from within Command Workstation? I am using CWS ver. 6.

Adobe Acrobat / Acrobat bug report
August 23, 2017, 11:11:28 AM
I submitted a bug report for the stupid 'add sticky note with SHIFT+CLICK' with output preview open.

Bug: Add to an already made selection with the mouse

Please go there and vote the shit out of it. Probably won't help but my life goal right now is to get it changed before I die. :sarcasm:

Kodak Systems / Prinergy and jpeg compression
August 06, 2017, 10:01:19 PM
Prinergy ColorMatch converts image objects with identical CMYK tints differently on the same page, causing visible artifacts

Symptoms

When different image objects that are on the same page and that have the same CMYK tint are ColorMatched in Prinergy, they can be converted to different tints. Visible artifacts can be created where these objects touch each other.

This problem can be encountered when using Ink Optimizing Solution (IOS) ICC DeviceLinks (DVLs) with CMYK images at the time of Refining.

Product

All versions of Kodak Prinergy software.

Cause

The problem is caused by the use of JPEG compression. The default Export Adobe PDF selection for Adobe InDesign software (and other Adobe programs) is to compress images using JPEG when flattening or saving out the PDF. InDesign uses a different JPEG encoder than Prinergy, and when Prinergy decodes the compressed image in order to apply ColorMatching, certain pixel values are rounded off and create different CMYK values than other non-JPEG areas.

Solution

Ask the originator to change the Compression settings in the Export Adobe PDF dialog box in InDesign (and other Adobe products). The settings for Color Images and Grayscale Images should be changed from the default JPEG encoding to ZIP compression.

[attachimg=1 width=400]

Workarounds

If it is impossible to get the original InDesign (or other creative application) documents and re-export them with ZIP compression, try the following workarounds:

  • (Recommended) Use Enfocus PitStop Pro software to change the compression of all JPEG images in the PDF to ZIP.
  • (Use with Caution) If the user does not have PitStop Pro, open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro software and use File > Save As Other > Optimized PDF to force downsampling of all images to change the compression of images from JPEG to ZIP. For instance, to trigger downsampling, set the target resolution to "300 dpi or greater" and resample to 299 dpi. This method can be problematic, as there will be some loss of resolution, and the user will also have to confirm that the resolution of each JPEG-compressed image in the file is higher than the target resolution, or re-compression will not be triggered for those images and they will remain as JPEG.

Note: Callas PreFlight+ software prior to Prinergy 8.0 cannot be used as a workaround. Although PreFlight+ has an action to recompress JPEG images as ZIP, Callas prior to Prinergy 8.0 used a different JPEG decoder than Adobe and decompressing/recompressing the images in PreFlight+ will result in different ColorMatch conversions. PreFlight+ in Prinergy 8.0 and later can be used to recompress images as .zip.

Adobe InDesign / More variable info needed
June 13, 2017, 11:03:58 PM
Need to do some raffle tickets numbered 1- 2000. They need to be numbered like below for each page where the first page would be 1 - 5. Page 2 would 6-10. Page 3 would be 11-15, etc...up through the last page which would be 1996-2000. One problem though is that the spacing between row 1 and 2 should be 2 inches while the spacing between rows 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 needs to be 1.25 inches. Is that even possible in InDesign?

OK I am putting this in General Prepress because I don't know if the problem is with Acrobat DC, Pitstop 13/2017, or Mac OS Sierra....

About two weeks ago we started having issues in Acrobat DC when trying to view separations the page would disappear when turning separations on/off. I can click the blank canvas where the page used to show and it will re-appear. This is happening on multiple iMacs all running Acrobat DC, Pitstop 13 Update 2 or Pitstop 2017, and Mac OS Sierra. We are having the same issues on Macs running Mac OS Sierra 12.2, 12.3, and 12.4 so it isn't the latest updates to the OS causing it.

The thing is that after battling it for a bit the problem will just disappear and everything will work fine until Acrobat DC is shut down and re-launched. In testing this morning I have found it happens on PDF on the network or on the local HD so I don't believe it is a network issue. Also if I view separations without ever having Pitstop open they seem to view fine but once I open anything in Pitstop the problems usually start in but not always.

Some days different users can go a full day or two without any issues but then it comes back. There have not been any recent updates to Acrobat DC or Pitstop 13. I am the only one running Pitstop 2017 at the moment. I installed it yesterday just to see if it might fix the issue but it did not. I get the same behavior with Pitstop 2017 that I was getting with Pitstop 13 Update 2 installed.

I have tried clearing Acrobat preferences and that did not help either. Really at a loss here and I'm not willing to state for sure it is a Pitstop issue.

Basically is anyone else that is running Acrobat DC and either Pitstop 13 or 2017 seeing something like this?

Kodak Systems / Kodak default passwords
April 14, 2017, 06:57:43 AM
If you got the bulletins from Kodak recently about the need to change the default passwords on your Kodak servers for the admin accounts including the araxi account what they don't tell you in their instructions is that if you use the "&" character in the araxi password that Insite will not work. Of course when you submit an emergency support request the first thing they say is 'Oh yeah, you can't use the "&" character in the araxi password'. Well gee how about putting that in your detailed instructions? It was fun changing those passwords in about 50,000 places not once but twice!

Ughhhhhh....So after having been printer and hard proof free for 7 years it looks like we are going to need to be able to make hard copy contract proofs for jobs on the new press going in. Will need to be G7 or some type of certification. Looking for an inkjet. Probably in the 24" wide roll size. Any recommendations on a printer in the HP, Epson, Canon line and the RIP, ie...EFI XF, GMG, etc...?

I seriously am getting too old for new adventures like this. :old:

Adobe InDesign / Window Size and position.
March 16, 2017, 03:56:35 PM
This is driving me crazy...CC 2017 InDesign on Mac OS 10.12.3 Sierra. Every time you open a document or create a new one the window goes all the way from the edge of the left side of the monitor to the edge of the right side of the monitor. It goes under the toolbar on the left and under the pallets on the right side of the monitor. Deleted prefs. No help. Made sure my toolbar and pallets are anchored instead of floating freely. Still no luck. Have to manually resize it every time.

Enfocus / Enfocus announces PitStop 2017
March 08, 2017, 06:40:21 PM
Enfocus announces PitStop 2017

The most powerful and technically advanced PDF preflight and correction solution available on the market today

Interesting excerpt:

QuoteThe name change to PitStop 2017 signals a move to an annual release cycle and introduces changes to the upgrade, pricing and support policies.

Customers under maintenance will automatically receive the new PitStop 2017 license upon release.

Customers buying a new PitStop 13 license from now until the release of PitStop 2017, will automatically also receive a license for PitStop 2017 that they can use when it is available.

For PitStop 13 users without a maintenance contract, the most cost effective way to upgrade to PitStop 2017 is by taking out an annual maintenance contract now. This offer is only available until the release of PitStop 2017.

Customers on older versions also have the opportunity to take out a maintenance contract prior to release, but they must upgrade to the current PitStop 13 version first to be able to do so.

Purchasing a maintenance contract is the most cost effective way to automatically receive major PitStop upgrade versions. From the day PitStop 2017 is released, only maintenance contract customers and customers who obtained PitStop licenses through subscription may contact Enfocus directly for priority support through the Enfocus support portal. Priority support includes a response within 1 business day.

Customers without a maintenance contract can only look for answers to their questions by consulting the "Known issues and solutions" webpage, found on the Enfocus website, or seek help from fellow users on the Enfocus community forum.
