Pantone Matching System (PMS) is 45 years old and Pantone introduced new system this week. Goe has more colors (2058 versus 1114 for PMS). Goe books are arranged chromatically. Goe numbers mean "something" and it tells you how to convert it's colors to RGB. That's a new one! It was created under ISO guidelines and it is printed on closest thing to "standard" paper.

Will this effect prepress? You bet!

I had the privilege of working with Pantone on this new release. It was pretty exciting to work on a brand new product from a company as respected as Pantone.

You are absolutely correct that it will have an effect on pre-press.  It is impressive how quickly Pantone's partners are jumping on board and licensing the product and getting the libraries into their systems.

The package includes a very impressive software component for creating and sharing color palettes.

Coming out at the same time as the news of the X-Rite purchase of Pantone may diminish the impact of the GOE announcement, but it seems like a good partnership.  It's my hope that X-Rite will keep  Pantone largely intact.
