Macintosh / Re: iMac Suddenly Super Slow
May 29, 2019, 03:18:30 AM
Onyx fixes a lot of things but it can be scary to flush out / run maintenance of stuff you don't understand.  Plus I don't always have time for a reboot. I use Onyx when things get bad but for everyday monitoring / fixing I use ;

- MenuMeters ; info about processor load, RAM usage, Network traffic and more right in your menu bar.  Recently rewritten for El Capitan and above. Free.
https://member.ipmu.jp/yuji.tachikawa/MenuMetersElCapitan/

- Memory Clean 2 ; free RAM scrubber from FIPLAB.  Daily use because I have less RAM than I really need.  Helps with eg PhotoShop etc. not releasing its RAM when it quits.

When all that fails to solve the problem, as with my 2008 iMac at home I bit the bullet and did a complete reformat and reinstall.  Before; so slow as to be almost unusable most of the time.  After; like a new machine and faster than my 2015 work iMac.  I hope it doesn't come to that for any of you but it's worth knowing that it can be a solution.

QuoteMy day is just full of magic work, lucky me I suppose. It gets one up in the morning.

:o I like it, but I don't like it that much ...

Fonts / Re: T3Font issue
March 27, 2019, 04:49:13 AM
A quick search confirms I have about 20 Type3 fonts lurking around, from 1986-8.  I have some bitmap fonts too from even earlier but of course I never use any of them ... anyone remember a font called Chicago?

The Rest... / Re: Corel back on the Mac

Quote from: Joe on March 12, 2019, 07:43:07 AMCan't wait until I get a 1" x 1" vector logo that comes in around 4 GB and won't process through Prinergy.

If its a Corel file we would bounce it and ask for a PDF or .ai file.

Fonts / Re: What font is this?

Quote from: Possum on February 26, 2019, 01:56:12 PMFont Squirrel (yes, that's the name) is another site like What The Font. I usually try both. They work in a similar fashion, but sometimes get different results.

I also use a Chinese website which identifies things that MyFont and Font Squirrel can't.

en.likefont.com

A word of warning - it looks dodgy so I never click on any link or download a font from that site.

We do a lot of NCR where the PDF A/W is the same but the 2nd copy needs to be B/W.  We found that our RIP will convert most things, but not embedded vector art with spot colours.  I use the overlay method - works pretty well.

Digital Printing / Re: Paper "scam"

We are told that the reason for this in shops at least is so that till workers have to open the till to give you your change, making the sale legal.  Obvious bs.
In the last UK election one of the minor parties proposed the introduction of a 99p coin.

Have you tried printing the f*cker out and measuring it?  With a Ruler?

My old boss would have used a ruler on the monitor

CMS - Proofing - Printers / Re: Poll: Work Lighting
December 06, 2018, 08:50:11 AM
I voted Daylight as my preferred option because that gives the best colour balance.  Where I used to work we had those fancy daylight bulbs but they are expensive and the secretary thought they would be like a tanning bed (she used to use them in her office).

Having said all that, most places I have worked just have regular overhead fluorescents.

A quick calculation shows me that UK petrol works out at average $7.137 / gallon.

We started selling petrol in litres in the mid 1990s when the price per gallon got too scary.

Adapter? I would look for a 2nd hand mac monitor or something with the right connector.

Design Applications / Re: UV effect for pdf
November 05, 2018, 08:18:18 AM
You got the mask for the UV areas so I would do a 40% white shaped vignette at say 75ยบ set to Screen or Lighten, with a small bevel effect to enhance the 3D illusion.  Do it on another layer and send em a PDF.  If they don't like it, fuck em.

So to sum up;
- its not ready for release
- when it is (and if they fix everything) it might be as good as Quark  :vomit:
- it's cheaper than InDesign but not as good
- it doesn't handle fonts, text boxes, picture boxes or PDFs particularly well
- it's never going to be industry standard
- I'll still need PhotoShop and Illustrator

What exactly is my motivation here? I mean, I'm just not feeling it.  Maybe if I hated Adobe more for making a great piece of software then holding us to ransom for using it . . .
