In later versions of Photoshop, in convert to profile (advanced), one can convert a CMYK file using a DeviceLink Profile, which will go directly from CMYK to CMYK, bypassing the standard ICC profile PCS (which is why the K channel is lost). The caveat being that the DLP has to be setup to retain the original K channel and that you have to get your hands on or create a DLP in the first place.

The Acrobat Pro Convert Colours "Preserve..." feature only works on vector text/objects (not raster images or vector gradients).

PitStop Pro can apply a DLP to only vector objects, however with the Acrobat Pro "convert options, preserve" one can create an end result similar to using a DLP. To apply a DLP to an image in Acrobat Pro, one would have to use the touch up image tool and then use Photoshop.

P.S.: If you can make a clean selection/mask of the K only "text" (perhaps starting with the K channel), then it is possible to keep it at 100K only using a standard ICC conversion inside Photoshop. One can use the channel mixer adjustment layer, set to monochrome, with 0%cmy and 200%k.

I've seen that too. Been burnt once too often. Now I always duplicate the final touchup image into a new temp file, then save and close the touchup image. If it fails to update in Acrobat Pro, I then use the touchup again and this time copy/paste the duplicate image over it again and save. It then usually updates. You know how it goes, the image will NOT update when you have done a lot of edits and you don't have a duped version for safety.

Sometimes you just have to cheat and layer/stack some KO white type under the black, in order to beat auto overprinting that is beyond your control at the PDF document level (such as sending a prepared file to another printer).

Although 35% is the default, one can hold down OPT/ALT when applying S/H and the last used value in that open session will populate in the field, this is common for many Photoshop commands with the ellipsis marks...

I agree that one has to double check the results of automation. Firstly, automation gives us the time to check the results and still come out in front compared to doing this junk manually. Secondly, who wants to do this manually?

MandL, it is possible to achieve what you wish to do with PitStop Pro 12, not sure what version you are using? There is no S&R function, however one can get there in a long winded way.

I presume that the pin feed marks always start at the same position with the same distance between repeats, then they would vary as to how many pins would need added, depending on the width of the job. There would probably have to be separate action lists created for your common job widths.

This is something that should be automated.
