Title: Passworded PDF
Post by: Chelle on January 19, 2009, 04:43:31 PM
I swear I saw this here somewhere, but for the life of me can't remember: anyone know how to open a PDF that has a password on it?

Yes, it's been brought up. You have Colorsync Utility in your /Apps/Utilities folder, you can open the PDF in it, and  resave out, password bye-bye. I don't believe it works in Leopard, V10.5, but it does work in V10.4.

Yup - you're right. The shiny new iMac with 10.5 won't let me re-save. Shoot. Oh, well. Thanks, DCS!

Put it on YouSendIt and PM me the link... I am leaving, but can do it at home later.

I didn't see this until I got home. It's no big deal - just thought if I could still do it on the new Mac I would. It's just an image for a catalog. I can "fix" it in PS and it'll be just fine for what we need it for. But thank you!

I tried some testing on the colorsync utility. It resides in the "Applications:Utilities" folder on both OS X 10.4 and 10.5. The one in 10.5 does not give you the option to Save As. When booted into Leopard you cannot run the OS 10.4 version of Colorsync. You have to boot into Tiger and run it from there and then it will let you do the "Save As" and get rid of the security. The only other options I could find for unlocking security enhanced PDF files is not free but they are not terribly expensive either. The best option would be to tell the dufus creating them to stop using it IF they would like to get their job printed.

Is there any special way of opening the PDF with the Colorsync Utility? I just got a PDF today that I can't place because I get an error that says that the PDF has security settings that won't allow it to be placed. I tried to open it with Colorsync and it says can't open file.

I can't even open it with Photoshop to rasterize it. Of course the person who sent it is on the phone with our sales person and wants her to refer to it.

I can open it with Acrobat 9 but the computer I have 9 loaded on has been having trouble working correctly on our network so I can't just print it out of Acrobat 9.

No special way, just Open PDF, do a Save As... done. You have somthing else going on.
Title: Re: Passworded PDF
Post by: ratintrap on January 21, 2009, 09:44:19 AM
I was able to save the PDF as an eps and place that to get it printed out so our salesperson had something to refer to.

I looked at the security settings for the PDF in Acrobat 9 and it didn't look like it had any restrictive settings. I suppose quite a bit of my trouble is because we are using outdated layout applications.

I'm pretty sure that I can save the PDF as Post Script and re-distill to get a usable PDF so I think I'm out of the woods on this one.

Rat, there is a whole host of things that can be in a newer PDF (transparency, form data, etc...) that will make PageMaker puke. When PageMaker can't figure out what it is, it throws up the generic security warning just because it doesn't really know what the problem is.

InDesign puked too. :puke:

I got it to work with the re-distill, I did get the attached error when I did it though, it still generated the PDF anyway. I don't know if that's a clue.

Normally, if I was having trouble with a PDF and I had a salesperson on my case to get a printout to them, that's what I would do. As I said earlier, this particular PDF gave me an error message when I tried to open it in Photoshop.

Seems like all I've been doing today is banging my head against the wall to get things to work right. (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-violent002.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org)

That's not much better than using PageMaker. You are always going to have issues with new PDF's in old applications. In Acrobat 9, under "File:Document Properties", what version is the PDF and what application created it?

There is the reason. If you can make a postscript file and distill as a PDF 1.3 or 1.4 it will probably work in PM or ID 2.0. Or use the EPS you have already made.

if all else fails and you must have it, grab a copy of cutePDF- http://www.cutepdf.com/ (windoze, sorry!)

install the print driver, open your PDF, 'print' it via cutePDF - the result should be unlocked. usually works (with a few exceptions)

or just post that pdf somewheres...

I preflight all of the PDFs that people submit to us with Acrobat 9, if I find any problems, I run it through some fixups that save it to 1.3, flatten transparency, etc.

I ran this particular PDF through all that and still had trouble with it.

I got another PDF a little while ago with the same type of problem. I went through all the steps to get it fixed up, then I found out that they had sent the ad at the wrong size anyway and probably will either not use it or will send a new PDF.

I've got a very limited amount of time to replace 7 pp in a Financial Report of a fancy "arts" organisation here. Like NOW.

Lo and behold...a Passworded 2 pp PDF. The producer in the screengrab is me, post-ColorSync, but it was a windows created one. Quick jump into b4p, get solution...bingo.

Awesome.  I finally was faced with this today with an internal document that they wanted to do some updating to and all we had on file was a password protected PDF from like 10 years ago which was created by an employee that left about 8 years ago.  Opened in Color Sync, saved and all is good again.

You mean User password? There is no password remover can do that so far, as they can only remove Owner password only. You may refer to the author for the open password.

Post by: Dramatictimes on August 28, 2009, 03:50:43 AM
What kind of password of your pdf file? If it is owner password, you can use a password remove to wipe it off. Otherwise it is a user password and you have to get it from the author of the file.

Funny Color Sync doesn't work on this PDF. It opens one blank page in a 33 page file. Same OS and version of Color Sync you used too. Maybe color space issues? This PDF contains spots CMYK and RGB. One of the many reasons I need to remove the password. I kicked it back to the customer tho.

you can find out with the file open in Acrobat, go to the file menu and drag down to properties, click on the security tab.

Kick it back. But try this - it sometimes works. If you can open the file in Acrobat, try to open it in Photoshop (CMYK (duh) for color, grayscale for B&W; I usually do 450 dpi, media. Flatten and save as .eps.

Or, open the pdf in Acrobat, save as .ps and redistill with all compression turned off.

Sometimes in a pinch, and the stars are aligned, these fixes will get you to the proof/plate stage.

Quote from: Tracy on March 15, 2010, 11:10:58 AMIt wouldn't let me open in photoshop! Government pdf
Oh... I've had one of those before. I never could get it to a workable format, and the customer at the time was one which an 'untouchable," so we weren't allowed to kick it back. It was a "make it happen" job. It was some kind of form. Pitstop let me export the seal as a jpeg image, which I cleaned up as best I could in PhotoShop and then placed into the new document, which I re-typeset from the original. Lucky for me it was a 2-sided 8.5 x 11 K/K form so it was pretty easy.

One more thing to try... it's gonna sound weird. Do a Ctrl-D in Acrobat and make a list of the fonts used (usually on government forms it's just Times). Load all the fonts and then open the file in Illustrator. If the form won't let you do that, take the pdf and place it like an image in InDesign and then export as a pdf. Make sure compression is off, and all images and fonts are embedded. You should end up with an editable pdf. BUT, sometimes the government forms are locked in a way that won't even allow you to place it in InDesign. If that happens, you're screwed until they can get you new artwork, 'cuz I'm out of ideas.

The radio buttons dont print (didnt know that)
They sent new files (password protected)

The only passworded PDF I've encountered is my payroll stub. No reason to print that.

Whoever is submitting locked files to a printer for printing is retarded. We'll never know how this culminates along the various chains of commands within different companies.

It reminds me of repetitive files I worked with years ago given to us from a "professional designer" that were set up entirely in PS and saved as Photoshop EPS. Every month we were asked by the client to make small changes & tweaks - not gonna happen. We always had to go back to the designer and have him do it, then resend a new EPS. Talk about anal.

Have one client like that here Gnub. Rather large corporations too, I could say exactly but I'll leave it at they're involved with footwear. Had a super ultra rush last week, custy was late on files and doubled an already damn near impossible deadline. The designer missed filling in a path and that almost broke the whole deal. Almost everything I get is a flattened tiff placed in illy. Can't trap or change a damn thing including type. Trust me, with designs that ugly nobody is going to steal them. At least give your printer a chance to make it look good.

Truth be told, there isn't a whole lot of difference between b4print.com and facebook.com. They are both mainly a social site. b4print.com though is mainly a social site for prepress people. I should probably do away with the standard forum and make it look more like facebook. :sarcasm:

Don't worry, it shan't be long until it's automatically set up for you and you'll get an email telling you to check it out and make sure everything looks ok, that all your "friends" are really your "friends".  Doomed.

Even the Mormons haven't gotten me. I am listed on their genealogy site but according to them I'm around 65 yrs old and my name is spelled wrong.  :toaster:

Yeah, color-sync hasn't worked since OS 10.4.x. I'm sure Adobe/Apple isn't aware that works. Shhhhh...don't tell them.

Nice! I had one that nothing else worked on - Colorsync, Preview or several standalone apps & CLI commands. That site stripped the Security out pronto & kicked it right back!  :goodpost:
