Hi guys

I am a bit confussed.
At the prepressure site it is written, that PDF/X-4 is based on PDF 1.6.
But when using the PDF export in Adobe Indesign CS3 it seems that PDF/X-4:2007 it is based on PDF 1.4.

Can some of you help me out?

Best Regards

Are you sure that's not compatibility? Meaning, it is based on 1.6, but compatible with 1.4, meaning it can handle 1.4 files.

check this link from Adobe:
http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/acrobat/articles/acr8ap_pdfx_02.html

here's a quote from the link:

QuoteThe PDF/X-4:2007 format saves PDF 1.6 or later files. This format preserves transparency (does not flatten it) and layers.

and like DCS stated, it's a "compatability" not a format.

hope that helps,
David

Since it is an ISO-standard, maybe we should trust them. Check out this page.

In InDesign to make a PDF/X-4:2008 file it makes a 1.4 (Acrobat 5 compatible). Here is what it says about it:

Quote[Based on '[PDF/X-4:2008]'] Use these settings to create Adobe PDF documents that are to be checked or must conform to PDF/X-4:2008, an ISO standard for graphic content exchange.  For more information on creating PDF/X-4 compliant PDF documents, please refer to the Acrobat User Guide.  Created PDF documents can be opened with Acrobat and Adobe Reader 5.0 and later.
