Prepress has always been, and obviously still is, too accommodating to lazy stupid people that would rather see you beating your head against the wall trying to make their crap work then taking an extra 4 seconds to do it the right way. :banghead:

Yeah!  >:(

so much faster for them to fix their file or give us the natives
than the hoops we jump through to fix things

Since I'm currently unemployed (and not in the good way like Joe), I have nothing better to do than this anyway.

Image trying to deal with it in the real world  ;D ;D

Thankfully it was only a couple of times a year, and about to be someone elses problem, as I have made an executive decision that our (non existent) rip upgrade means we can no longer accept this type of pdf file.

Yep, and in my experience, ex prepress operators who transition into sales are the worst kind. What used to be a real problem when they had to deal with it at an operator level, suddenly becomes a non issue when they have to deal with it from a sales point of view.

Most of my major work blowups have been because of this scenario, surprisingly I'm still here and they ain't.

And the designers are obviously WAY better than the prepress monkeys to actually listen to how WE need them to prepare the pdfs, or whatever they send. I am guilty of bending over backwards to fix their messes. If i could tell them to fix it up, that would be great. But its like talking to a brick wall.

"There's been a lot of research recently on how hard it is to dislodge an impression once it's been implanted in someone's mind. (This is why political attack ads don't have to be true to be effective. The other side can point out their inaccuracies, but the voter's mind privileges the memory of the original accusation, which was juicier than any counterargument ever could be.)"

There used to be an Acrobat plugin that did this, 'Seps to Comp' I think it was called.
That was in the days of before transparency so you only had to worry about knockout and overprint.
I can imagine nowadays that with transparency it's a much more complex operation.

Yep, my old shop had that plugin. We needed it because at the time, the only way Microsoft Publisher could output hi-res data was as seps. We used it a handful of times, then shortly thereafter Publisher was able to output a hi-res PDF directly.
