I will go that route also but I'll wait until the weekend. Let me know of any "issues".
will do, I will run it the rest of the week and see what pops up in production. I am using it now... no magic fartin' unicorns or nothin yet :(
Nah, not worth the trouble at this point. Maybe at home once I put a new HD in the MacBook, assuming the Core2Duo will handle it anyway.
I know I have customers that will upgrade so I have to do it to test the functionality with Insite.
My laptop is dead in the water. Says install failed and I can't get past that screen. Won't even boot or show my time machine backup
That's not good. Can you boot into recovery mode?

As a result of the mavericks or what prevents you from trying?
I can get to recovery mode and get the OS X Utilities with the options of: restore from time machine, reinstall OS X, get help online or disk utility. Reinstall doesn't work... Disk utility does repair on permissions but says disk is damaged and can't repair. Restore from time machine says there is nothing there.
Had no problems with the laptop until I tried to update.
I am running fine, but from reading the previous posts I dont know for how long.
so far I CAN say, there is nothing new enough to make it a needed upgrade. I watched their keynote video and it all sounds good, but lying to people seems to be a common practice to sell shit over the last few decades....
Nice feature, I'll be sure to try it out immediately because new = awesome, always!
I'm sure it wasn't Apples fault. :sarcasm:

It sounds like either your HD was killed by Mavericks or it just happened to di during the upgrade (stranger things have happened).
Was your time machine backup on that same hard drive? (never a good idea)

Indeed...
QuoteWhy call it Mavericks?
Apple has finally run out of cat names for its OS X updates—sorry, lynx, bobcat, and liger—so it's on to a brand-new theme. Instead, the company has chosen to base subsequent OS X updates on locations in its home state of California. The first of these is Mavericks, a famous surfing location just southwest of San Francisco.
Huh? And I thought the cat names were retarded...
Why don't they use the place names of where their products are actually made, by slaves? Too exotic?

I like it!
And don't worry about when the Chinese invade America. They all work for Apple!
Went from 10.6.8 to 10.9 with no problem at all on a MacBook Pro (intel core2duo, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD). Haven't spent too much time with it. Really only concerned with QA for EFI Metrix.
All back ups were done on an external drive, but it won't let me boot from it. Finally gave up on it last night. Gonna give it another go tonight when I get home.

What are you guys? Like 70? My Mom is a big fan of that show
I blame my mom, if I watched TV with her it was British comedy or drama series.
Like when Deadwood came out and everyone was all "that Al Swearengen guy is such a good actor"
I was thinking "duh, that's bloody Lovejoy ya twit."
I could keep up with Benny Hill's limericks by the age of 10.

I, too, was a Benny Hill fan under the age of 10. I liked Fawlty Towers also.

Don't forget -- I'm the guy who started a
Doctor Who thread in the TV section!
I grew up in a household with two older parents (my mother was 42 when she had me) that watched a lot of PBS --
Mystery!,
Fawlty Towers,
Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett version), plus I watched the kids' stuff (
Sesame Street,
Electric Company,
3-2-1- Contact,
ZOOM!, etc.). It was because Doctor Who followed the kids' shows every weeknight at 7:00 pm that I first got into the show.
I kept watching PBS as I got older, seeing shows like
Red Dwarf,
Blake's 7,
Keeping Up Appearances,
The Young Ones, and so on.
Are You Being Served? didn't start airing until the early '90s here (when I was in college). At first, I remember my folks watching this show and thinking, "WTF is this?!" (especially after seeing Mrs. Slocombe's beehive hairdo). But after I sat down and began watching the show, I was drawn into the humor and the characters.

So....back to Mavericks for a minute. Any idea where I can get an image or installer for Mountain Lion? I did purchase from Apple, but since I can't get to my desktop at the moment and I didn't make a bootable USB (yes major forehead slap) I am stuck at the moment. Also, when I try to boot in safe mode, I get to the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning gear looking wheel, then it just shuts down. When rebooting after that, it goes back to trying to install Mavericks. My hard drive, not the sub drive, the S.M.A.R.T. status says it is verified. I did get to one point last night where it tried to reinstall Mountain Lion, but said the hard drive was locked and I couldn't install. Is there a way to unlock?
By the way, I use to watch all those PBS shows too. My favorites: Monty Python, Faulty Towers, Are you being served, Dr. Who

Can you get to disk utility at any point?
Yes, I can get to disk utility by booting with option r. But I haven't had any luck from that point.
p.s. I forgot about Black Adder
You can't initialize the HD in Disk Utility?
I can run repair permissions..all is good. When I run verify disk, it tells me the drive is damaged, back up and reformat. I can't get past that. From what I was reading on the Apple site, if the S.M.A.R.T says verified, your hard drive isn't really damaged. I don't know. I was hoping to not initialize the hard drive, at least not just yet.
Some how I have managed to get mountain lion to reinstall.....so far. It still have over an hour to go, but so far things seem to be working. I will let you know if it works or not....fingers crossed.
It worked!!! Laptop is up and running. Go me!!!!!!
Cool. Let us know what you think of Mavericks when you get a chance to run it. Or are you back at Mountain Lion?
I am sticking with mountain lion for now. I will let everyone else work out all the kinks and take my chances with having to pay for the upgrade at a later date.
I installed it on an external firewire drive attached to my 27" 2010 iMac and at home on my 2012 Mac Mini's main drive. No real issues to speak of although the install's time left feature is a joke. I waited almost 15 minutes when it said, "Less than a minute to go", also booting back to SL left me at a grey screen on the iMac, I had to push the button on the back to shut it down and then restart but it booted fine and right into SL. Mavericks also seems to lag a bit when you log out, it goes to a grey screen first then to the login screen. I ran Rampage, and the new apps like Maps and iBooks still haven't had time to try the Adobe apps or Quark.
I did the install on Tuesday to hopefully fix my Illustrator problems. No dice.
Nothing special about Mavericks, and if it wasn't free i wouldn't have bothered.
Much of the touted features seem to do with the F'ing cloud and since this is my work machine and the IT admin set everything up with his Apple ID, I can't use any of the new stuff. You can't even download the update without having an Apple ID. I had to wait for my IT guy to do it for me. In fact, i was going to just reinstall the latest Lion OS ( Command R ) and I couldn't even do that without an Apple ID.
All your ID belong to Apple.
Lynda.com is doing their "Intro to Mavericks" (http://on.fb.me/QNDlQi) for free until Nov 17th, but it looks like you have to go through their stupid FaceBooks page to access it.

Apple would never do such a thing!
or change things
or remove features like FTP
or release untested shit that breaks most existing programs
or drop support for legacy computers
or send out secret patches that cause havoc and you spend days trying to figure out what happened because you didn't install anything new.
nothing like that from the
innovative, bleeding edge technology marketing company that happens to sell hardware that is now Apple.
Getting Mavericks for free is about like getting an STD for free.
It's never free Joe. Hasn't life taught you that yet?
The "bleeding edge" is the knife blade slicing your wrists after spending days involved in an "upgrade".
it's free-ish...
Just got a Mavericks reminder on my 10.8.5 Mini at home. Am doing nothing for the moment. It came out while I was away; kinda missed it. No urgency, is there? :undecided:
No urgency. Not a whole lot of extra anything though I have read that Apple only releases Security updates for Mavericks so any previous OS is a security risk. Not sure how accurate that report is as it was on CNET that is notoriously pro Windows.
For work though...I can tell you that XMF client will not install or run on it.

10.5.8 at work. Delaying until we are dragged kicking and screaming with the next big XMF upgrade, sometime next year (2014). New server box in the mix as well, as it's a move to 64-bit on XMF server. Which means a major upgrade of Black Magic, which means... etc.... etc...
Our Prinect/Signastation upgrade is pending for the next few weeks, so we're updating all the Macs as far as 10.7 since that's all they support, and I think these 1st gen Intel G5 Towers might not even take 10.8, who knows.
Intel G5 Towers? No such thing. Everything up through G5 had PowerPC CPU's and if they have PowerPC processors you can't go any further than OS X 10.5.8. Apple dropped the "G" designation when they switched to Intel CPUs. My 1st gen Intel iMac can't install anything after OS X 10.7. That was a 2006 model.
So you guys are going with Prinect instead of XMF?

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)

Xserve (Early 2009)
Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space
you can tell a G5 Mac from an Intel Mac by the DVD drive doors.
A G5 has 1 DVD drive door, an Intel Mac has 2.

Apparently. Even as bad-ass as XMF looked & the benefits, I guess Heidelberg made 'em some kind of offer to stay with Prinect. Probably a bundled deal of some kind with the impending press install. Whatever.
Yes. That is an Intel CPU. No where does it say "G5". So yes, you can run 10.7 on an Intel Mac Pro but not on a G5 Mac Pro.
