Macintosh / If OWC had to create this
January 05, 2017, 07:48:15 AM
http://gizmodo.com/a-new-accessory-makes-the-macbook-pro-actually-suitable-1790779235

Then Apple really has lost the point. It's more a fashion accessory now that shows to others that you can afford it. It's not the best tool for the job, it's the one with the best name.

It's a sad thing but I've been out of the PC building thing for a while so I'm really, really behind. My last build was Core 2 Duo LGA 775 on an ASUS maximus formula SE with a pair of Radeon 4800's and 6 g of DDR2 (remember that old ass stuff?). She's been good but I think it's time to upgrade.

I'm pretty sure my PSU is in the 850 - 900 w range and a Corsair so I should be able to recycle that. The lian-li case I love but cases have some a long way since I spent too much money on that aluminum thing. I can get a new CPU but the quad cores are $250 and that just gets me to the bottom rung of the ladder. I think I need a new MB, CPU and sadly a new GPU. The tons of HDDs I have can be transferred.

It's mainly the GPU and CPU I need help with. I know I can go and spend a ton of money and get a great system but I was always a bit behind the bleeding edge for my wallet's sake. The MB will be a ASUS, the chip intel and from what I read, Nvidia GPU. Just need to know what is the best bang for my buck.

All this because I bought a game without looking at the minimum specs first. Never had that problem before.  :undecided:

Macintosh / Shared drive weirdness
December 20, 2016, 09:30:46 AM
Since the Mac has gained a distrust of the external drives I have them plugged into the prinergy server and have them shared to I can organize the files. Moving them from external windows to internal Mac isn't an issue but cutting or deleting them gives me a "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." error.

In the quick reading I did the TL;DR version is AFB/SMB sucks between platforms and I need extra software to make it work correctly. That's not happening so is there anything else I can attempt? All permissions on the windows side are full control. I'm presently using SMB to connect. Ideas?

Kodak Systems / Changing media size in prinergy
October 20, 2016, 08:01:30 AM
I have a 40x40 poster I'd like to print but my size limit is 42x32 or there abouts. The options to change size are grayed out so I can't change them there. I'm looking through the help file but that's being all that helpful.

Any ideas?

General Prepress / Multi level dies
October 03, 2016, 10:14:03 AM
How do you guys set up multi level dies? I have one here from a big firm and it's about as clear as mud. There are 4 different spot colors for embossing but no mention of height. How do you guys do it?

Macintosh / Finder weirdness
September 08, 2016, 11:08:59 AM
I come in today and one of my backup external drives is acting possessed. It will show the directory structure from root but if you do into any of the folders it comes back with nothing. It says 0 folders and I know there isn't. I've seen finder be slow before, it happens all the time with the prinergy server. I tried another drive that wasn't plugged in and that didn't even show up. I've tried rebooting, different cables, restarting finder brought back the one drive but it did the same, showed no folders in the containing folder. Restart finder again and I got it to see folders on that drive but not the initial drive with issues. I used Onyx to clean some things out but still the same.

Ideas? The drive is old so it's possible it's dying. I may take it home and see if it works on a computer not 15 years old. When I eject it says a program is using the drive, maybe it's still searching? The first folder down only had 2 folders in it, below those 2 are ones with hundreds of folders. Maybe I'm not waiting long enough?

The Rest... / Stand alone imposition options
July 26, 2016, 06:25:55 AM
Though it works fine for what we need the limitation of power pc emulation means I have to find another solution than Preps 5. I'm looking for options for a 8up imposition program that will work with prinergy EVO. I'm assuming since imposition isn't integral to EVO, any software that spits out a .jdf file will work. I would love auto ganging but that's not mandatory. Since the boss is a bit of a control freak (full disclosure, I am at times too) I normally end up manually imposing in preps to get everything where I want it.

I'd be happy with a standalone program that is easy to use and might offer auto ganging. I have to do dummies for every job so folding patterns isn't important. I'd rather not have a acrobat based plugin only because my acrobat install is nothing close to stable.

Hopefully the light on Matt's computer went on and he'll have some ideas along with the rest of you. I'd prefer hands on experience as I trust your experiences over any sales bullshit.

Windows / Outlook hates me
July 12, 2016, 01:51:05 PM
Outlook 2013 was working fine for weeks. Now for some reason whenever it's closed, it wipes all emails. It was originally setup as IMAP. Now it's gotten worse as it won't even load without crashing. I can load it in safe mode and it seems to keep emails after closing but now won't open in regular mode. It also wipes all emails off the server so I've set up POP on safe mode and hopefully it won't purge everything.

I've uninstalled it and reinstalled but it still crashes. I really, REALLY don't want to reformat it but it's really doing weird things now. Windows update just hangs while looking for updates. Malwarebytes is running now but windows defender didn't find anything.

CMS - Proofing - Printers / New proofer
June 21, 2016, 08:34:58 AM
Well, our Epson is getting a little long in the tooth. The belt is fraying and making the encoder freak out. The boss told me to start looking on ebay. Personally, I'd rather not use ebay. Just from his experiences alone should teach him there is a reason something is cheap on ebay, there is a reason. Maybe stop buying used crap and you'll have less problems, or at least you'll have someone to bring it back to and yell at.

Anyway, I have a 9800. Should I be looking for a direct replacement or something newer? Also if anyone has a NY metro area based reseller of print equipment PM or post info. I'd rather deal with someone in the trade that knows what they are talking about. I know there is one local to me here but for some reason I can't find their info.

Also, if anyone happens to be upgrading and their machine isn't a total shitshow let me know.

Windows / New laptop
June 07, 2016, 08:27:18 AM
So I convinced the boss to get me a new laptop. I can no longer remotely login through chrome so I can't do things remotely. I pitched getting me a laptop so I can do work remotely then just go through the prinergy server that I can still connect to.

The only thing that might cause issue is the licence for preps. I need to be able to create and modify templates but I only have it in the Mac. I'm thinking of getting a windows laptop, if I install preps on that will I have the ability to modify and create templates? I can then just place them in the templates folder when I log into the prinergy box.

Or is this all a bad idea? I can't upgrade the mac because of preps. Do they have a power PC emulator that runs in newer versions of OSX?

Macintosh / Services in the background
June 02, 2016, 09:01:26 AM
So I was kicking around and flashing stuff on my phone in terminal and opened the console. I noticed repeating errors of 2 programs I deleted long ago. I managed to get rid of the LogMeIn by searching and clearing every trace I can find. I'm trying to do it with teamviewer but it's not playing nice. It seems to keep trying to start but since it was deleted, the folder it's looking for doesn't exist so it tries, fails then tries again.

Any ideas?

Adobe Acrobat / Reinstalling
April 22, 2016, 07:26:39 AM
Acrobat is about as stable as a hooker on methadone on my mac. I was thinking of reinstalling it but it seems I got CS6 digitally as I don't have physical media for it. This made me take a step back and think.

Is reinstalling the best choice? Are there any settings or perfs I can delete and see if that improves things? Remember I'm from the PC camp and reinstalling is the normal choice. Will I have to reinstall pitstop as well?

If I do install I would assume I have to do to adobe for the download? Knowing me if it was possible to download and save it I did and it's somewhere on the 6TB of storage here.

General Prepress / PMS colors you can't AQ
April 13, 2016, 10:56:17 AM
Has anyone run into a PMS color you can't AQ? I remember in the past reflex blue used to cause headaches but I remember being told they reformulated it and it's no longer a problem. We have a purple that's mainly violet and trans white and the ink guy is saying it can't be coated.

Random Technology / Proof Hostgator kinda sucks
April 11, 2016, 01:16:31 PM
I've had minor issues, mainly heaps and heaps of spam on my email, but nothing really horrible. I came in on march 25th to the boss complaining about bounced emails. I searched all around and just figured it was another jackass on the shared server at HG that got the IP on a blacklist.

No, it was HG blacklisting MX guarddog's IP. They are a great spam filter that Joe pointed me to that took those heaps (900+ in one day sometimes) of spam and brought it down to one in the last 3 months. In HG's infinite wisdom they internally blacklisted the one thing that's helping with the ton of spam.

Here is a breakdown of what went down.

Agfa Systems / Avalon B8 24S
April 06, 2016, 11:35:33 AM
Has anyone had any experience with this machine? AGFA dropped a proposal on us and I asked for a used screen machine and this doesn't really look like it. I really don't want to change workflows but it might get us close to the modern age.

Macintosh / Cloning drives
March 31, 2016, 08:25:01 AM
I have my old HDD as a backup in case the SSD fails. I want to clone the HDD from the SSD to have a updated backup. Do I (should I?) format the HDD before cloning or just leave it as is?

Also, what's the better option, Apple disk utility or CCC? I'd think disk utility but apple has fooled me in the past.

Random Technology / Video card upgrade
March 16, 2016, 09:44:06 AM
I'm running a Mac Pro 2x 2g Dual core Xenon with 10.6.8 Senior leopard. I have a 250g SSD for my system drive, 1TB for storage and numerous externals for archiving and TM backups. I know it's an old box but it's still working fine and I doubt I will be able to get the money for a new one. I might be able to wiggle some upgrade money though. I've noticed some issues opening files with high quality enabled lately.

I presently have a GeForce 7300 GT with 256mb of memory in a PCIe slot. Would upgrading the video card be worth it? I'm familiar with gaming cards more than workstation cards. I'm thinking a card with a bunch more memory should help with the display slowdowns. I need at least 2 outputs for my 2 monitors. I did find this page with options for upgrades. I may have issues finding the cards as they are so old. Is it worth it or will I not see much improvement?
